Rattle

i167.photobucket.com/albums/u141/amazingtrade/lada...g

This was taken the day it was scrapped as it had one day MOT remaining and even my dad knew there was little point on having it inspected. It ran on 3 cylinders and produced more smoke than a steam train causing my dad to be stopped by the police a lot.

If people wonder why I obsess with little faults on cars I think I am making up for a partly lost chidhood!

Picture was taken in Jan 98, went from this to an N reg Punto SX felt like a Rolls Royce. Read more

Rattle, your Dad's Lada looks to be in what would have been considered quite good condition, were it to have lived in late 80s/early 90s Russia. In those days I travelled in far, far worse. Looks all right to me.

My least favourite cars in those days were old Volgas, which all seemed to have perforated exhausts, perforated floors, and no window winders on the back doors. In the rare event of stopping at a red light, the cabin would always fill with fumes.

When out on the streets thumbing lifts (very much the done thing, private drivers would gladly stop to pick up passengers for a small fee and would always be staggered at getting a foreigner step inside), the old thumb was much more enthusiastic when it spotted a Lada, very much the nicest cars to travel in compared to Moskvich, Volga, Zaporozhets etc.

I was looking at mobile tyre fitter sites and noted a good deal on Falken tyres. They are of same spec to my car, other than 'xl' ie extra load. I've learnt my car load index is standard 92, but xlis 96. I will fit to the rear only & have Bridgestones to the front. Would it be ok re the 'xl'?

I'm not aware of any problems fitting tyres that that are rated higher than the recommended values.

With the XL rating though, you'll find the ride a bit harder as the side walls of the tyres will be stiffer.

Hi

DSG gearbox in my Seat needs to be replace, the quote from the Seat gargge is too much and it's not worth doing.

So I'm looking at putting in a replacement box from another car, however I've been told their of problems with this as Seat tie the gear box and the mechatronic unit to the ECU. And even if you replace all three you still may have problems.

Can anyone shed any light on this.

Thanks

Gary

What has failed, the gearbox, the mechatronic unit or the ECU? I had a mechatronic unit replaced on an A3 and a friend with a TT had his fixed, so no need to replace all components unless they have all failed.

thank you. i must admit that i did think of a push button didn't know where to start. i wouldn't want to disable the current system but possibly just add to it for use in emergencies. i would imagine that the harness is virtually the same on the ST so it wouldn't involve too much work, just the ability to be able to read wiring diagrams.

The failed first test earlier in the year made him realise that he doesn't know everything :-)... However now he has to;

1) get insured,
2) buy a car??,
3) drive on motorways and
4) learn how to get around himself without mum, dad or satnav to guide him.

1) Do we just start with him as a named (new) driver on mum's insurance which was where it was linked to during the "learning to drive" phase or start him off on his own?

2) Any thoughts... he drove his mum's X-reg Renault Clio and the instructor's new Yaris to learn in. PS were the findings of the Top Gear bit on young'uns buying a safe but dull Volvo the best route?

3) Ask the instructor to give him a couple of lessons on specific motorway driving - I've done enough of that myself so I can give him the basics (hope he listens!)

4) Take him to the Car Shop in town and give him £1.99 for one of those big UK map books featuring speed camera positions etc

Any thoughts on the above would be appreciated. Read more

I agree with the earlier recommendations for Pass Plus. My younger son had his insurance quote halved when he got it.

the horn on this 51 reg 307 has an intermitant problem. sometimes it works and some times it doesnt. when the car is stationary we turned the steering wheel from left to right and kept on pressing the horn. this made the horn work in some positions and not in others. do we need the steering wheel off. will this be a broken wire behind the wheel. what happens with the air bag if we do remove the steering wheel??? many thanks rich

Firstly i know nothing about cars so any help would be appreciated! In May i had my MOT and service done at Kwik fit (dont worry ill never be going back) They replaced the shock absorbers and a bit from the exhaust. Since then every time i drive over a speed hump, drain etc my car makes a nosie like a dull thud/creek more often on the passenger side than the drivers. i thought it was just the new shocks asjusting but its since gotten louder and more prominant.

Any ideas of what it could be and can i still take it back to kwikfit!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could be that the exhaust is hitting the floor, needs realigning.

Hi all

Just bought demonstrator model but seem to be only getting 25 mpg. can this be right? thought I should be getting around 40 with the new engine. Am I missing something or is it just my poor driving. previously had sline A6 tdi which worked out at nearer 40.

Hi. I have hesitation when i accellerate, only if i put my foot down hard. It also hesitates around the 3000 rpm mark. I have modified my driving to use the accelorator gently and it all seems ok, but if i need to overtake, wether i change down or not, the hesitation is most apparent.
There are no noises, oil leaks, it is serviced regularily, no warning lights, no excess fuel usage, no black smoke.
It has just sailed through the MOT and i asked the garage to put it on the diagnostic machine and no fault was found. Someone said it could be the air flow meter?

Thanks Read more

I had similar issues on my 2000 1.8t Passat and it was the MAF meter. The symptoms got progressively worse and eventually it wouldn't rev past about 5500rpm. I had no fault codes either.
