Afternoon all,

The other day we received what I imagine was an NIP. It was in a white envelope with "Camera Enforcement, Liverpool" as the return address on the back and had "If this is addressed to a company, then this should be directed to the company secretary" printed above the name and address.

Talking of which, the address on the NIP was correct (ie, ours), but the name was one that I didn't recognise and SWMBO tells me that nobody of that name has ever lived here, certainly not in the past twelve years anyway.

I popped it back in the post with "nobody of that name at this address - return to sender" written on the front. Did I do the right thing? Could this potentially turn into a right royal pain in the unmentionables?

Cheers. Read more

Sorry about that. I was trying to get out with SWMBO in my ear. I should have explained it better.

Can you please help.
I was driving my astra to work yesterday and I noticed the temp gauge had risen to the red and was overheating. I pulled over quickly and turned off the engine to let it cool down.
There was water in the car and the radiator fan was working, a friend of mine asked if the internal fans were still kicking out hot air when on, which they were.
Some peple have said it could be a thermostat problem but I do not know much about cars so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Read more

1. If the water pump is operated on a separate belt ...

It doesn't.
2. It could be head gasket....remove rocker box cover look for white mayo.

Not a conclusive test as these engines are renowned for being overcooled (same rad used for the whole range of engines) and it's not uncommon for mayo to be present on the oil filler cap, etc, more so with short journeys.
3. Thermostat could have failed closed

May well be. Check the return hose to the radiator to see if hotter than the supply hose from the rad to the engine.

My car's offside rear tyre has a shallow dent in the sidewall, about 0.6 mm (estimated) deep and about 15 mm across. I suspect it was caused about a week ago when I was slowly reversing on a friend's drive and caught the sharp corner of a concrete kerb-like border edging stone. When I first noticed the dent it was much deeper and wider than it is now. I assume that the tyre's steel reinforcement was deformed inwards and that it has gradually returned to closer to its normal shape.

If it was yours, what would you do about it? I'm concerned about the safety aspect but don't want to buy a new tyre unnecessarily. Read more

Little dent in is OK little dent out is not.

Discovered a little dent out in a front tyre last week, was wondering what to do about it, then read this - replacement fitted this morning. Thanks.

Hi All

My W reg 2.0 Vectra has a problem which at first was intermittent and is now permanent .. the ABS and TC lights are permanently on and the speedo appears dead. A mechanic friend tried to communicate with the ABS ECU with a diagnostic box but got 'no communication'. I have done a few basic things like cleaning the front wheel sensors and checking the ABS fuse but problem still persists. Searching the web for this problem suggest that it most likely to be the ABS ECU. Is this diagnosis correct and is there anything I can do to fix it (the initially intermittent nature of the fault suggested that it might be a contact problem). I also found a company that offers to rebuild the ABS ECU for £100. Does anything have any experience of this option ?

Any advice as to the quickest and cheapest way to fix this problem very welcome.
Thanks in advance

have you changed the radio for a non standard? speed signal goes to radio as well to increase radio volume when speed increases & when after market radios are fitted sometimes the speed sense wire is put to earth! Stops the speedo & puts on lights

Just done the 3yr service on the astra used genuine parts plugs, air filter oil& filter & pollen filter, mileage at 25k almost out of warranty 56 reg.

Who makes the engine oil is it shell?

I used 5w-30 vauxhall own brand fully synthetic i did look at others but it holds 4.5ltrs with filter and mobil 1 is only 4ltrs some others were the same at £16.00 & £2.50 for the oil filter it's worth it.

Yours will probably require the brake pedal to be pressed at the same time as the trip reset.

Hi Guys,

Could anyone tell me where to find the engine number on a 2005 ford mondeo 1.8 LX?

Also, if the engine should have 'Duratec' label/sign on it?

Thanks,
Sam. Read more

The engine number is the last five numbers of the VIN code which you will find on the VIN plate, also at the bottom of the screen and stamped in the floor by the drivers seat-not always on the engine. That will have a 3 or 4 letter code to denote type of engine.

Certainly anything other than DIY isn't going to be viable for pretty much any household appliance repair these days >>

I recently had to scrap an otherwise perfectly serviceable washing machine simply because the cost of labour plus parts to change bearings made it a no-brainer to replace it with a new machine.

At the moment, I have two cars insured with Admiral under one of their 'Multi-car' policies. One is a 'daily driver', whilst the other (an elderly W124) is kept as a bit of a 'bangernomics' trial. The latter is only insured for 3,000 miles per annum, of which I've used about 2k.

Unfortunately, my other half's car will soon need a bit of work doing, which could keep it off the road for a month or so. She would be quite entitled to use the W124 on her own insurance policy, but her usage would probably break the 3k limit - even though the car is not 'at risk' though Admiral (I am the only driver on the policy).

So, do insurance companies ever bother checking annual mileages (e.g. through MoT certs) when dealing with claims? Read more

>>What I meant was that I would expect the average monthly mileage to be calculated up to the date of the accident/claim. At the moment it would be in excess of the permissible 1000 per month.

That would never work, we all do wonky mileages. The most obvious is if you renew, then go on a European trip and after 2000 miles and 2 weeks have a crash.
It is more of a problem if you did in the last year 20000 miles and then take out an insurance for only 10k. But even that could be correct due to say a change in jobs...

I should be fine with mine, 82K in 9 years on 10K policy...
