I was just wondering what the smallest v6 engine is

Is there a lower limit to a V6 design, would a 1.0L V6 actually work or are there too many losses to overcome ? Read more

There is also the Benelli 750 Sei which was a straight six produced in the 1970s. More details on this thread in Biker's Caff

Hi. I suffered a rear end shunt into my car this evening. The impact was quite hard but there didn't appear to be any real damage - his reg plate was cracked and there was only a small scratch to my car at the point of impact.

Do you think I should get my car checked over?

Stupidly, I didn't get his number plate or details, as after checking there was no damage, I wanted to get away from the scene as soon as possible. I am a single business woman, he was a guy in a hoodie and although he was apologetic I still felt threatened as it was in a not very nice area and there were drunks jeering me nearby. It was a one-way street which had been backing up as we had been stationary for 15 mins waiting for a HGV to turn in the road so drivers behind were already impatient.

I now regret not getting his details in case there is any damage. Do you think this is likely, and do you think it will be costly to repair?

Cheers.

Fullchat - and others isn't there some complete and utter pink fluffy dice posted on here and
some downright useless advice? I really don't know why I read it or why someone
would post on here looking for good advice.

Exactly!
IMO this site is losing the plot at the moment!

someone quotes a website, but didnt bother to read what was stated on that website, I point out the relevant bits, including the reporting to police within 24 hours. I (and others) get told we are basically stupid to suggest reporting the accident (although by matter of any damage/injury - and there was, maybe only minor, as stated in the OP it was a legal requirement) and in any case, whiplash can take a few hours to come out.

what would be the OP's position if the other person did report it, and she didnt?
I know I would feel happier knowing I had covered my back....

Hi
Would appreciate any advice on why the motor should completely cut out
when changing down from 3rd to 2nd gear. It only happens intermitently
making it extremely difficult to trace and never at a garage where it
could be checked. There are no warning lights at all - its like the key
has been turned off. It usually restarts sometimes partially, but after the
3rd attempt it runs OK. Occasionally after a brief stop we have problems
restarting the motor again it starts and then stops after a couple of revs
- are the two problems linked??
We're in danger of being rammed from behind by someone who doesn't know we've 'stalled'.
As usual the garages with their computers have found nothing!!
Love the car but at times feel a horse and cart would be more reliable.

Help would be appreciated

I've got exactly the same problem. Please let me know if you managed to locate the fault. Many thanks

I was wondering if anyone had ever taken a dealership to court and represented themselves?

I'm facing an uphill battle but having fought this far I may as well follow it through to the end. I bought a little FIAT Panda new from a dealership and followed the warranty requirements to the letter. The car developed a misfire and by 12,000 miles I reported this to the garage but they were unable to find a fault.

This went on, each time the car went in they couldnt find a fault, they even had it overnight once and....no fault!

Then at just before 48,000 mile service it went back in an again I reported the misfire and also a smell from the engine. They were unable to find a fault...or so they said...I have now had a copy of the mechanics notes stating...oil in the throttle body...cleaned out..customer should monitor...Unfortunately the finding was not reported to me nor was I told to monitor anything..that said I wouldnt know where to start to look for the throttle body...

Then when my car just went outside of the warranty mileage the engine started misfiring really badly..they took it in and looked at it and found oil in the throttle body...this prompted them to carry out a pressure test and they discovered that the oil was coming from the valves....blah blah (technical speak) and now they say it needs a new engine or an engine rebuild.....I believe they should have carried out this pressure test back at 48,000 miles....or before...

I was completely gutted as FIAT wouldnt even offer me any goodwill towards the cost of the repair/new engine.....and described it as "fair wear and tear"..I decided to have the car independently assessed and although they did warn me to be prepared for a wear and tear pb but they found that the problem of oil in the throttle body was down to the valves leaking (past seals) for quite some time...(hence misfire from before 12,000 miles)

Sorry if this is going on.....hope you are still with me....so I am now faced with paying for a massive repair which will end up costing more than the car is now worth or attempting to fight my own corner and at least getting some contribution from the dealership...who I believe didnt investigate the engine problem well enough..and so missed the opportunity for me to repair it under warranty.

So back to my question...have you ever represented yourself in court...I am a Geologist so know absolutely nothing about engines (except the oil, water, levels and tyre pressures)! and I am afraid that I will be bamboozled with technical speak from their expert witness and end up looking like a complete....well blonde (no offence intended to blondes...I am one myself!!)

If you have represented yourself do you have any advice? I think I will just be me, get all my notes together beforehand and explain what has happened. Its not iminent though...have been without my car for 4 months and have a court date of March 2010!!! so have plenty of time to prepare!

Any comments gratefully received!

Yeah i threated a main VW dealer a couple of years ago. My new passat was nearly wrote off (it should have been actually). drug dealer off his head ploughed into it while parked up.
The repair took 6 weeks through the incompetance of the bodyshop. I wasnt happy gave them car back and told them to sort it. Came back with more faults and ones i had shown previousley not repaired. I arranged a meeting with the dealer principal/who happened to be the owner. I physically took them around the vehicle showed them how incompetant the repairs and the company was, and gave them one last chance. I threated legal action on return of vehicle not satisfactory. It back like new, subsequently i didnt need to go the legal route.

Advice needed folks please.

Which Off road tyres should I put on the Jimny. Muddy fields and wet grass slopes in the main. No crazy off road stuff, just a shooting hack, but of course they must do the job. Would probably put them on a spare set of wheels for the winter. I will still be doing quite a bit of road work too and although they must work I don't want anything that will be worn out by the road in five minutes.

Thanks, Martin D Read more

Don't be too sure - the old Vitara (mark one) could do some decent offroading on road tyres - plenty of anecdotes of Jimnys and Vitaras pulling heavier "proper" 4x4s out of bog after sinking too deep.

Just wondered what peoples thoughts are on high mileage hatchbacks?
I have the chance to buy an 03 plate ST170 with about £170k on the clock. It's about £1000 cheaper than an avergae mileage equivalent.

I'm told it's motorway mileage but is it a bit risky being that it's a Ford?Petrol?hottish Hatch.

Any thoughts? Read more

The cars I've had with high mileage I used to take more care of them, but like looking after a old pet.:)

>>I realise that PS/2 has no connection with DIN I should have said DIN style :).>>

You weren't that far off Rattle..:-)

The PS/2 mouse connector replaced the older DE-9 RS-232 Serial mouse connector and the PS/2 keyboard connector, in turn, the larger 5-pin DIN used in the IBM PC/AT design.

At the time IBM issued technical specifications for such matters, in similar fashion to that of Intel who laid down the requirements amongst others, for example, for motherboards, power supply units (PSU) and ATX/BTX cases.

Hi Friends

I made an expensive mistake of buying a mazda 6 from Ebay few months back. Mazda 6, 2004 plate, manual, turbo diesel 1998 cc. The car has now run about 93000miles (I drove about 4500miles) now the engine has siezed.

1. Any Advice or contact information on where to get a new engine would be big favour.
2. Please do advice if you thing refurbished Engine lasts or should i just scrap my car.
3. IF you know any garage or company that can buy my car (Everything except engine works, A/c heater, rear defogger stereo, 6 cd changer very good interiors) please let me know.

Thanks in advance

Hello Friends.

Thanks for your replies on my thread. Robin you are right I did not mention what is wrong with the engine. However, it has become almost impossible for me to find that out. I have taken my car to two seperate garages (got them towed there) and they both mentioned that the engine has sized up and cannot be repaired. Both were good garages One authorised Boch garage called Jesmond in New Castle and the other Garage is FeatherDiesel, diesel engine experts in halifax. (These guys actually did a good job few months back on my car and fixed the engine stalling when idling problem.)

The second garage even charged me for an hours labour and all they said was it would cost you more to get any more details about whats wrong with the engine and eventually after spending that extra money our advice would still be replace the engine no one can fix this.

Hence this is all I knw about the car and the engine's problem. Its been a nightmare. This car. Just sheer waste of money :(

Thank you all for replying on this thread. I finally sold my car to a garage for 600GBP. IT had all the goodies inside nice clean car just a useless engine and turbo. In my short 3-4month experience as an owner of Mazda 6, i spent a lot of time being towed from one place to the other and got this general feeling that local mechanics/main Dealer mechanics both did not know how to fix this car.

example: Perry's Mazda Dealer garage...I took the car to them told them this car does not start and check engine light is on. They checked engine error codes and told me replace the EGR valve. I did as advised, job was done by Perrys for 400GBP. In less than a month car would not start. Then Perry's were too busy so told me to get the car's Fuel pump repaired by Feather Diesel, Halfiax. Which i did and it again costed me about 350GBP approx.

Check engine light kept coming on even after this and ech time error codes were for EGR valve. Local mechanics kept shying away from doing much on this car said it was Japnese car and they were more used to the Fords and Vaxhaulls etc.

Anyway based on my experience I would only recommend don't buy mazda's and when you buy a secondhand car, buy a car which has atleast 6months warranty left on it so that you can judge if the car is worth keeping, before end of warranty expires.

Good Day!!

In the long-gone days of my youth, it was legal to ride a moped along a designated cycle path; not a footpath. Can any of our BiB experts please tell me if this is still the case?

Reason I ask is this; my route to work takes me down a road which is OK for all traffic one way but is has the blue "cycle" sign t'other, along with a narrow track which physically deters cars.

We are downsizing to one car, and considering buying a scooter for me to commute on. Bottom line is, if I use the route described above it would save me a detour on the homeward route of about a mile and a half and also avoid a fast and busy dual carriageway.

I've done a search on this but advice seems a little ambiguous; some say you can't do it any more and others that provided it is a genuine moped it is still legal. I would be buying what is nowadays defined as a moped not a motorcycle, in fact I've considered one of those electric jobbies. If I cannot legally use this route I will probably buy a faster and more powerful commuter bike and go the long way round, but it'd be good to know for certain first. Read more
