Hi
Just looking for some advice, just got the car on the cheap from the car market, seemed like a great deal except when we first got it the engine light was always on. So after having it a while we put it into a local garage who has done various checks on it and came back saying after putting it into the computer that it is the timing belt!DEVASTING news!
The car runs great, the only thing is when you are starting in the lower gears its quite jerky, kinda bumpy...anyway I just wanted to know if it is infact the timing belt would the car even run at all? I was led to believe the car wouldn't go if this was nackered is that the case?
Any advice would be great? Read more

I just got a quote from a garage in Leicester: £627 (including VAT). The chap I spoke to said they get a kit and replace the timing chain which will take 8.5 hours. Another garage said it takes only 4 hrs.
I'll keep you informed.

my 04 x-trail makes a humming noise from the front o/s only when steering left
everything looks ok under neath but i suspect it may be the drive shaft support bearing making the noise has anyone had a similar problem or can offer any advice - cheers Read more

sounds just like a wheel bearing but there is so much drag through the transmission
that is is impossible to spin the wheel i geuss i will just have to
strip it down and have a look

Jack it up, grip the top and bottom of the wheel and rock it back and forth, you should be able to feel it if there is a problem. You will feel a slight knock as you do it....it's subtle. Then jack up the other side and repeat. You should feel a difference if you only have one bad wheel bearing.

Is it me, or do more motorists drive more aggressively towards small cars. Normally I drive largish saloon cars although last couple of days I have had to use my sons Citreon C1.
I have had more cars cut me up, drive inches from the rear bumper, and refuse to give way
more times than i care to remember. Back to my normal car today and no more problems.do drivers have something against these small cars, or was I just unlucky.

I notice some ebayers selling these kits are selling them as legal ....

A lot of the kits I have seen being sold, have "for off road use only" in the write up of the advert.

To quote from one website:-

"Please remember that it is your responsibility to ensure that the items purchased are suitable for your vehicle make/model and that the use of said items complies with all applicable laws in your Country. In the UK, fitting an aftermarket HID kit is not technically road legal as you are replacing a halogen bulb with an HID bulb, because of this the HID bulb cannot be E marked, which is a requirement for it to be road legal. Therefore our HID kits are sold for off-road use only."

further into my investigation the engine management light is on and is smoking quite bad. i've had a diagnostic done and it turns out to be a damaged wire harness which needs replacing.

Hi Guys, I don't know where my earlier post went, so trying again...

I had my car serviced today at a Peugeot dealer. I had the 60 000 service done at 50 000 (car is 7 years old). But the techinician had stamped the 80 000 box on the following page of the service book! When I complained, the lady tippexed this box out, filled in the correct box and attached a note to the book, on their letter head, explaining why this was done.

My car has a clean service history and low mileage, and i feel they have ruined it by making the servuce book look dodgey. Is this going to be a problem? What can I demand they do about it?

As I write this [7.15pm] the A14 remains closed in both directions because of an accident before 3pm between J10 and J11.
While enjoying the silence of the eventually cleared deserted road [which runs near the bottom of my garden - all traffic had to reverse back to J10] a police car drew up. 'Why paralyse a major route for so long?' I asked. The absurd reply was 'We have to treat it as a murder scene..' followed by the unpleasant ..'if you dont leave you'll be arrested..'

Clearly the police, not only incapable of dealing with antisocial behaviour towards the vulnerable, are also incapable of distinguishing between murder and manslaughter. Anyway, even if it was a murder...both carrigeways, FOUR+ HOURS??

What is this country coming to? Meanwhile, the roads surrounding the area resemble car-parks and we are precluded from driving anywhere much locally while tens of thousands of personhours are wasted...... Read more

British Police successes are rarely newsworthy. That they have one of the best success rates against terrorism and murder>>

Are these successes statistically based? Unless the basis for the stats is explained, you can't judge on the figures.

How do you measure the "success rates against terrorism"? Would that be plots prevented or terrorists arrested after the event?

Whenever there is criticism of the police we're told they're protecting us from the terrorist threat. Even if true, what that's got to do with closing roads for hours is anybody's guess.

I wouldn't want to have the job of peering into mangled wreckage or bearing the bad news to relatives. But if there's no malice I'd have thought that once the road is photographed and the ambulances gone, the wreckage could be lifted for forensic examination elsewhere.

When I was in London I saw a petrol station called Eco Fuels it looks a bit grotty which was selling unleaded at £1.49p a litre it also seems really busy. Is this some kind of majic fuel? Most the fuel stations in London only seemed to be 2p more than what I pay in Manchester.

Hopefully the staff are now nicer than there were when i stayed. Been to a lot of Hotels everyfrom ghetos to 5 star city centre hotels. I never experienced such rude staff in my life, they were all european and just didn't really want to be there.

This was over ten years ago so hopefully it is a lot nicer now. It was being refurbished at the time so we got it cheap, it was also the first hotel we booked online. People seemed impressed that we dare to use such new technology to book a hotel.

Not much fun on a 28k modem though!

I'm sure my windscreen no longer gets caked in flies after a fast run like it used to.

This begs a few questions:

Are there fewer flies around, and if so, why is this?

Or are there the same number of flies, but fewer hitting my car?

Cars are more aerodynamic and wipers are more efficient than ever, so you might not notice flies so much.

But then cars are also much faster than they used to be, which suggests you might hit more, not fewer.

Or am I just plain wrong (perish the thought) and I am hitting as many flies as I used to?

Could also be the reason why we've only saw a handful of swallows and swifts this year, as well as the past two or three years.

Following on from Tawse's question about anti-freeze, I check mine each year by popping some in the freezer. This will verify it's temperature capabilities, but what about it's corrosion inhibitor qualities.

I've never changed antifreeze as a service item, except when it's failed the freezer test.

Does anyone know a method of checking it?

I ask as one car has had it's anti-freeze/corrosion inhibitor in since new, six years ago. Read more

Interesting, I remember having a coolant change recommended on my Petrol Civic some years ago, it was about 5 years old (I declined), later I lifted the bonnet and on a sticker inside was a statement saying coolant good for 10 years!
