My neighbour has asked me to have a look at his car. I have fixed some minor problems on it before.
Apparantly the engine check light is coming on. The car is sometimes stalling and sometimes over reving itself.

It has done around 140K miles. 6 to 12 months ago it had a top end rebuild in a local garage due to the cambelt falling off of a worn pulley.
It was serviced last year sometime.

Any ideas where to start looking? Read more

Where is the MIL connection on this vehicle? I drive a US version 1999 and I can't find the connector for the computer. I have the check engine indicator light on and can't diagnose the issue without it.

Thanks for your help.

i've noticed over the last few years that more and more cars are being fitted with 5 stud wheels.

why is this?

is it something to do with wheel security or weight loading?

i've got a four stud mondeo and wheels from other ford cars will fit.

is it the same with other makers? will vw golf wheels fit a passat? i even saw a newish vw polo with 5 studs today so it can't be to do with weight carrying, can it?

is it a cunning plan by the car makers to do away with aftermarket alloy wheel companies? Read more

OK, maybe that was an over generalisation as some cars require less torque on the nuts than others. 85Nm is different to 140Nm to a locking wheel nut key.

I am just about to buy this Vectra and the only thing I can find wrong is that the LED display for the mileage is very dim and hard to see....is this a difficult job to do and could I fix it myself?-------or could it have been messed about with to hide the true miles??? Read more

On my lovely green Vectra the mileage display went dim for about 6 months then suddenly came back to life when I's pyched myself up to follow the instructions in DD's link.

Our son was thinking of buying a Jeep Grand Cherokee, but emission, servicing, cost of 4x4 and depreciation has made him investigate the vaux viario avd fords transit, swb models - wth new being available at approx 0600 - he felt he would get the high eat position - three seas, masses of torge avd parked where he like iv car parks with little fear of others peoples doors dentivg his car - he drives approx 3k a year ((commutes by train to BoE/work)and if he kept t for 3, he reckons he will get about 6/k privately - he ill not use van to haul goods/building material etc adn it should be A1 nick and very, very low miles

Avy advice please!

BTW, va reg or swb types, similar to cars based on emissions? Read more

i'm looking at an altea s spec with the 1.9 90hp engine.it's brand new and a good deal
ive been told that these engines aren't economical and 40 in town is very optimostic.
my friends i30 gets 46 around town and i was hoping for something very near to that mileage if possible. Read more

Hello
My car is a 52 reg Renault Scenic 1.9 dci, 112k and does not have a turbo.
I was driving yesterday and suddenly when diesel engine revved up to it max, I took me foot of the accelerator and still the engine revved, to turned the ignition off, but still the engine revved. I had to stall it to stop the engine. I towed the car home and topped up the oil and water, I started the car OK, but there is a continuous stream of white smoke, again the engine revved to its max. The EGR valve is ok open and closes correctly. There are no oil or water leaks visible. Have you any ideas of what could be causing the problem?

Unfortunately I don't think there are any companies actively looking for 19 year old male drivers. Best to go to a broker I think but 2K is probably a reasonable quote I'm afraid

I'm considering buying the above car first registered July 2006. However, it has no maintenance shown on the service records other than an oil & filter change last month. It has covered 10,000 miles. Price asked is £5300. Should I be wary? Read more

I think the last batch of Corsa C's were 20,000 miles or two years servicing, whichever comes first. You could look at it that this one is just over time-wise or well within limits mileage-wise! First service is really only an oil and filter change and check over anyway.

I want to hire a special car for a special occasion but can't seem to hit the middle ground between a Ford Mondeo and an Aston Martin or Lamborghini at £2000+ for the weekend.

Where is M3 Convertible/RS4 Convertible hire available?

Hope you can help me!!! Time is running out!

I think my engine is kapput

The starter is spinning the engine one side but the crank pully isnt rotating on the opposite side and the cambelt isnt turning. The engine is a 1.9 td on a year 2000

The crank pully looks like it wobbles slightly when i turn the key, but it doesnt rotate.

Don't they have a Keyed Pully, it might be simply the woodruff key has snapped and it's turning inside the pully as Peter N says (just trying to be optimistic),if it's not an interference engine then the valves will also be OK.
