Family member is a named driver in a motor insurance policy for 3 years. She is 34 and thought best to get her own policy. She passed her test 3 years ago. Does any insurers offer NCB for named drivers or does she has to start from nil NCB? Read more
Hi,
My daughter is due to replace the 205/45/16 83W tyres on her Ibiza soon and has asked me about buying quieter tyres this time, due her mainly driving longer distances over some of our not so good road surfaces. I have two questions and would welcome any advice anyone may have on the subject.
Firstly, what are the quietest tyres in this size (ie. 205/45/16's) ?
Secondly, what are anyones thoughts on changing to 205/50/16's on the same wheel rims. I am assuming that there would not be a fitting problem, as the overall diameter is only 20.5 mm greater and rolling circumference only 3.47% greater .
Any experienced comments very welcome.

Hi,
She currently has Toyo TIR'S which are fine .Its the hard ride she would like to soften. What problems would be lightly later if 50 profile instead of 45 were fitted?
Any comments welcomed.
This is someting which I have often wondered. I know they end up in a scrap yard and bits taken off them. I then know they are crushed for the metal but what is the metal typicaly used for? I assume the scrapyard them selves turn the shell back into raw steel and sell it on? Or does the crushed car get sold on?
What is the metal then used for? Coca cola cans? Steel frames for buildings? Even new cars? Read more
After a service, I used to give my drained engine oil to my dad who'd stick it in the starship mileage Transit he owned, which used to burn the stuff as fast as he'd put it in.
I've seen a C240 merc for about £1200. It has done 100k+ miles but looks in good condition. I am concerned about reliability. The review on this site says the ecu can fail after 12 years and can't be fixed - the car is a 99 so 2 more years? Plus, there are also potential rust issues, it doesn't drive as well as the previous model.
I've always like the classic solid look of the older mercs (esp c class). Are there any owners that can give any advice? The owner reviews on parkers have generally been positive. Read more
I had a '98 240 Sport auto, great car, the only problem I had was the gearbox went into limp home mode a couple of times but 'cured itself' by switching off and re starting-Dealer quickly sorted it out - some kind of sensor if my memory serves me correctly. As Bagpuss said well put togther partictularly in the cabin, I had no rust issues or any other problems. Only changed it as I needed an estate.

Hi - this is my first post so treat me gently!
My Berlingo's 1.9 diesel engine cuts out intermittently without warning and will not start immediately afterwards - I have to leave it 5-10 minutes before restarting.
Interestingly the fault does not occur on a long run.
I've cleaned out the fuel filter housing and replaced the fuel filter - I don't think fuel supply to the pump is a problem.
I've taken it in for a diagnostic check at the local Citroen dealer and no fault was apparent.
The mechanic suggested that the problem could be a solenoid on the diesel pump that communicates with the ECU.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
How did you manage to resolve it?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Had a similar problem and the garage tried lots of things..replacing injectors and things.
Eventually they replaced the EGR valve and also updated the ECU software to the latest version..
It's difficult to say whether the fix with my car was the EGR valve, the software or both.
However, apparently there was a bug in early versions of the software which caused the solenoid to lock up in the fuel pump. This was cured in later versions of the software.
Worth checking with the garage what version of software is on you car and whether it's the latest version.
Not for the first time I have come across a 30 year old car which looks like it was made yesterday . In nearly every case, they have included in the description, the fact that the vehicle was ' Ziebatred " from new.
What ever happened to this process. / Why did it die out ?

There can't be many Vauxhall Vivas left knocking about in a reasonable condition so I
wouldn't carp about £2 000.
My first car was a Mk2 Ford Escort which was rubbish. 2 of my mates at the time had Vauxhall Vivas. The only good thing about the Vivas was that they made my Escort look like a Mercedes by comparison. Honestly, Vivas were terrible things. Truly horrible to drive even by the standards of the late 70s.
Hi
Just bought this van but it slows down when going uphill with or without any weight.
Drives fine and will go 70+mph but slows to about 60 when going uphill, you can sometimes physically feel it-as if the brakes have been dabbed then released again. As soon as the hill levels out it picks up speed like normal again.
Any ideas? its a real pain.
Cheers

There is a turbo on the 1.7Di engine, but no intercooler. The 1.7DTi has both turbo and intercooler.
The car should not be slowing down, so there is definately something amiss. I would start by getting a proper diagnostic, it sounds MAF sensor related though if there are no other symptoms/warning lights?
BTW, the amber car/spanner and engine lamps *both* light up and go off with the ignition, don't they?
Have a mondeo coil light came on with loss of power has happened a few times cylinder 2 knocking above threshold .....think it needs to be re programmed took it to a garage so they could have a quick look (not a ford garage).....now this is where i need help
he..the mechanic sat in the car and spent 5 mins reving and redlining the engine..before telling me yes injector problem
Removed injector 2 and injector 1 cleaned them with a rag and then put them in the opposite cylinders ie injector 2 into cylinder 1 and the same with the other one never reprogrammed them and said knocking unit/sensor was needed
Went away then came back and drove the car to ford garage about mile and half away (it struggled to start and was 50 times worse than when i drove it in ,told them what had happened so they changed the injectors back into the correct cylinders and reprogrammed the injectors but the car would not start 3 days later they removed all 4 injectors andtested them to find out that all 4 injectors were now extremly pink fluffy dice please let me no who is at fault here and explain to me why please as i dont know what to do ..............arrgh
