We go to Cornwall a couple of times a year. Coming from East Yorkshire its quite a long trip 350 miles or thereabouts. The route we go is down M1 to M42 then M5 onto A30. Journey times vary whoever you speak to. I have a couple of mates who one says 6hrs another says he's done it in less but when not much traffic. Personally i do it in about 6 and a half hours with 2 stops. My first stop is at Strensham services and my second at Taunton Dene (i like to fill up with shell) both of these are on the M5. We always take our own sarny's and a flask. The fill up at Taunton i try to make it do so i stop there on way back fill up to get me home. Over the years that A30 has got much better especially now Bodmin is bypassed, i think there's only one stretch to do now. The M5 is a good motorway by that i mean the views the land and things you can see (has anybody seen the Glastonbury Tor from it). We always say the journey is part of the hol the anticipation on arriving is there when going down. When you stop at service stations you always get the feeling everyone is doing the same and having a cuppa on there way to Cornwall. I thought i would start this thread to to see what other backroomers experiences are with this long journey. Where do you stop off, what sights do you look out for. Anyone know of somewhere good to stop on A30. Read more
Ok, I'll give you a scenario...
We have a stretch or road near us linking two towns, there is a Crematorium in one of the towns and every so often a hearse goes along the road to the Crematorium from the other town...
Its a NSR stretch of road, about 4 miles long with plenty of decent, safe, overtaking stretches... the hearse goes along at about 35mph...
The reason I ask was that recently I was driving down the road and came across a queue behind it and despite very little traffic coming the other way no-one would pass it... I overtook several cars in the queue but didn't reach the hearse - just to clarify, only the car right behind it was actually following the hearse to its final destination...
So would you overtake it if it had a coffin on board? Read more
Sadly they were in MSN which has now been chopped.
The pictures that were originally in the MSN group got transferred to the new group.

Hello people, I wonder if I could count once again on the brilliant minds which gather here...
I had my car serviced at my local indie about three weeks ago- they found nothing but, since yesterday morning, there's been a knocking noise from the front passenger side, not too intrusive but obviously it's something that needs looking at.
The problem is that I cannot be without my car until next week though I do not need to use it for any journeys over 10 miles.
I've been meaning to replace the car with something newer for some time (laziness!) so I'm not looking to own the car for anything more than another 2 months or so.
What, in your opinion is this? And, how safe do you think it will be to cover no more than 80 miles until next week?
Any opinions/musings very welcome. Thanks in advance :) Read more
I have a similar problem with my 2006 Focus Zetec Climate. I have had the obvious parts checked out.. suspension, CVJs, Anti-roll etc and it is still there. Any ideas?
Hello,
someone's snapped my driver's side door mirror off when it was parked. The mirror itself and its housing is all intact and the electrics (remote tilting & heating) still work. The only thing that is broken is the part that attaches the mirror casing to the door (the hinged bit that allows the mirror to be stored against the door when parked.
Is it possible to buy just this part? If so where from and how do I fit it myself?
Hope you can help -
all the best. Read more
A personalised mirror, you may have started a new trend. Nice work in sorting it out though, well done.
Can anyone advise me on what would cause both suspension coils to snap at the same time? This happened to me when I was driving my children to school last week. The driver's side coil pierced the tyre and I am told that I very narrowly avoided what could have been a tragic accident. This is our family car and neither my husband or I drive irresponsibly. I have no recollection of hitting anything that would have damaged the coils and now feel very uncertain about continuing to drive this car given doubts about safety. While the garage agreed to pay for the £600 repair despite the fact that the warranty had expired, I have to say that I found even this suspicious. This was mainly because garages are not prone to volunteering to work for nothing (in my experience anyway) and that depsite asking, the faulty parts were not all returned to me. (I was expcting four bits of coil - I got two). I was advised by a passing Samaritan who stopped to help me with what looked like a simple burst tyre, that the coil had been pressing against the inner rim of the tyre for some time and gradually wore it down. The garage deny this and say they both spontaneously snapped. Any advice anybody? Read more
>> It does seem to be common now ..........
The more that communications improve the more that failures will become known about. That doesn't
necessarily mean they're becoming more common though. I partly blame internet forum members for this
propagation of doom and gloom!

Is there anyway you can MOT your car before the day on your certificate? When I sell my car there will only be just less than 3 months left. I feel I will make the money back and sell the car easier if it has a full MOT. Read more
I think that the current certificate does not have to be produced ........
I admit my information was out-of-date.
Here's what Directgov say. (I wasn't aware of the rider in the second paragraph.)
"If the vehicle is tested within the calendar month prior to when the MOT is due, the test certificate will run from the date of the test to one year after the expiry date of the current certificate. For example, if the current certificate was due to expire on 1 April 2007, and the vehicle was presented on or after 2 March 2007, the certificate would run from the test date until 1 April 2008.
The same rule would also apply when the vehicle is taken in within a calendar month of its first MOT. In this case, the vehicle owner would need to present their registration document.
If the vehicle is tested earlier than one month before its due date, the MOT will only run for twelve months."
My son has just bought himself another car to use for commuting, he's wisely decided to make the Subaru a toy.
During his discussions with his insurance broker, they somehow got onto the subject of the job situation.
The broker told him that there had been 2 cases he knew of where people had lost there jobs and become (hopefully temporarily) unemployed, but didn't inform the insurance companies.
They subsequently had claims and both were denied as null and void due to non informing of changed situation.
Apparently some companies wil not insure unemployed people, even if the unemployed person took out there policy whilst in work.
Is this correct? If so it disturbs me greatly. Read more
Yes if your original Insurance quote was based on that information.
Based on what information? I doubt that the level of income from self-employment is ever asked by insurers - in the same way that employee's remuneration is not asked, either.

Went to York the other day and my usual route for last 3-4 years has been up A1 and join new A1(M) and on to A64. On my way up I decided to have a look at what was the A162 (Old A1) as I cant remember the life of me how it went. All I remember is that you passed over the M62 (power station on left and services on right) then go past A645 and Ferrybridge slips and pass a Forte Posthouse services a few miles up. Anyway as I said I had a look but was surprised. After A162 peels off and you swing left slightly the dual carriageway just ends (turns in to a B road) and little roundabouts start then it just goes residential. Just went up a few roundabouts and turned round. Where did the road go? or has it been demolished. All I remember was dual carriageway to to Aberford (M1 A1 interchange). Have I been dreaming, it was only 5 years ago since I last went up that road? Read more
