If you look to the right you'll see a link to a story about a specialist national police unit set up to counteract vehicle crime: "Stolen V5C etc".
{here's the link as it won't stay on the RH side of your screen forever:-
www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/item.htm?id=6023 }
The story says that the unit has recovered 1200 stolen cars since it was set up in December 2006. The Home Office website says that in 2005, the most recent year for which the data is easy to exctract, there were more than 200,000 cars stolen.
So 1200 recoveries seems a bit inconsequential and another fine example of attempted spin.
Or am I being unfair and, writing from deep within my armchair, failing to appreciate all the problems? Read more
Hi guys,
Does anyone know for sure if the injector nozzles have to be taken out @75.000 mile service?
I know the valve clearance has to be set, and I've seen other posts indicating that this means removing the injectors.
The reason for me asking is that I suspect a faulty injector, and I'm thinking to get them checked @the service, as it's probably much cheaper (if the remove them anyway).

Morning All,
Having recently been brought up to speed on the new EU directives on Daytime running lights, on a trip to Blackburn yesterday I saw two '05 reg MK V Golfs like mine with what appeared to be running lights, in the section at the bottom of the headlight, below the dipped beam and next to the indicator.
I had always wondered what this section of th eheadlight was for, but is this a retro-fit option or somehting that came from the factory?
If Retro fit, it would be something i would be quite keen to install...................
Cheers,

"I've never seen a VW vehicle with daytime running lights in the UK - perhaps you've seen one or, " The few new VW Phaetons I have seen recently have the bright big LEDs inside the light cluster similar to more expensive Audis.
With the Euro nearly at parity I am surprised that UK car retailers are not targetting the left hand drive market just across the channel.
i.e. reverse of what we had a couple of years ago!

Hi my heater in my 2000 1.25 fiesta was only blowing cold air so i changed the heater control valve and now i only get hot air, is it the heater control panel thats at fault? could it be anything else.... i have checked the voltage across the 2 pin plug which goes on the hcv and it was constant regardless whether the heater dial was on hot or cold Read more
Car :- Peugeot 306 D-turbo 1997.
Hi there. Having finished work about an hour ago I started her up and switched the lights on. At this both headlights illuminated for around a second before going out, leaving only the sidelights on.
I havn't had time to investigate the problem yet but obviously the bulbs are the first point of call.
What makes me think that this is more than a bulb problem is that they both went out at the same time.
Also, full beam works which rules out a blown fuse.
Any ideas other than blown bulbs would be much appreciated, although I m going to check them in the morning.
Regards,
Gary. Read more
What a coincidence though that both should choose to blow at exactly the same time.
When you get a bulb fail, there may well be a momentary increase in the current at the precise time of the failure, and this may have affected the other bulb.
Every car I've driven with climate goes from 16 C to "Lo" usually accompanied by a fanfare of fans as it tries to cool the cabin. So to what temperature does this setting attempt to get the car to ? Read more
in the states (and using hire cars for fun) we easily got a couple of inches of ice on the front windscreen in the middle of a chicago summer heatwave by turning the air con right down, didnt take long either in the humid air
i dont think uk cars get aircon anywhere near as powerful as that and whats supplied in genuinely hot countries
My car has a Toad Ai606 Thatcham 1 remote alarm / immob / door lock fitted as aftermarket. Have had no problem since it was fitted about 5 years ago, but have lost the 2nd set of keys and remote.
Now, I went and bought a 2nd fob off you know where auctionsite, as there are instructions in the original alarm manual ( which I have, along with the PIN # ). I did something similar on a friend's Ford and it worked , however this one is more complicated , instructions to programme in a new fob are ambiguous and I couldn't do it despite an hour and several attempts - problem is you need to count flashes of the LED and it just wasn't happening ..
Have contacted the manufacturer , Toad here in the UK, alas they are only interested in selling me a 2nd fob for £65 + VAT and other extras ( when a new alarm can be had FITTED at £210 inclusive , so what a rip -off ), which I will still need to programme, so not interested - they stopped responding when I inquired if I can take it anywhere or send the good and new keys somewhere for programming ( car is a seldom used 2nd vehicle ).
Am happy to pay reasonable amounts just to get the new fob programmed - trouble is who can do it ?
anybody know ?
thanks

My old car, 2006 Avensis 2.0 diesel speedo read 62 mph when my Tomtom read 60 mph and a regular over the same route measured 108 miles on the odometer.
I took delivery of a 2009 Avensis 2.0 diesel recently, the speedo reads 65 mph when the Tomtom reads 60 mph and the regular run over the same route reads 110 miles on the odometer.
I have the Avensis T2 with 16 inch wheels, higher specification Avensis models have 17 inch wheels.
I've spoken to a main dealer who doesn't believe it's a speedo calibration issue (calibrated to the wrong wheel size) and has informed me that you are allowed 10% speedo error. If my Tomtom is 100% accurate, my new Avensis is pretty close to the 10% inaccuracy limit.
I guess the next stage is to undertake a long journey checking the distance on the Tomtom against the odometer.
Does anybody have any thoughts or comments please. Read more
you are allowed 10% speedo
error.
Vehicle construction and use regulations allow a positive 10% error, but no negative error.
This has to be good news for road safety - I just hope they allow it to be switchable ;-) Read more
Not many, few know either what ESP is, or if they have it fitted.
As you know, it's there to stop regular drivers from coming off the road when they mis-judge a bend.
Anybody who intentionally uses ESP to reach the limits of grip and then gets caught out is just as likely to be the kind of driver to over-cook it without ESP!

DieselBoy said >> I would expect that most of the recovery figure claimed by AVCIS is from the VFU - this cannot be compared with the number of vehicles stolen throughout the whole of the UK. >>
But since, as he also says, the Vehicle Fraud Unit within AVCIS is funded by members of the Finance and Leasing association and recovers cars obtained on dodgy finance agreements, the stats are meaningless in terms of wider policing of stolen cars, and putting them in a press release just makes the whole thing more of an exercise in spin than it seemed at first.
