With the Euro nearly at parity I am surprised that UK car retailers are not targetting the left hand drive market just across the channel.
i.e. reverse of what we had a couple of years ago!

Hi my heater in my 2000 1.25 fiesta was only blowing cold air so i changed the heater control valve and now i only get hot air, is it the heater control panel thats at fault? could it be anything else.... i have checked the voltage across the 2 pin plug which goes on the hcv and it was constant regardless whether the heater dial was on hot or cold Read more
Car :- Peugeot 306 D-turbo 1997.
Hi there. Having finished work about an hour ago I started her up and switched the lights on. At this both headlights illuminated for around a second before going out, leaving only the sidelights on.
I havn't had time to investigate the problem yet but obviously the bulbs are the first point of call.
What makes me think that this is more than a bulb problem is that they both went out at the same time.
Also, full beam works which rules out a blown fuse.
Any ideas other than blown bulbs would be much appreciated, although I m going to check them in the morning.
Regards,
Gary. Read more
What a coincidence though that both should choose to blow at exactly the same time.
When you get a bulb fail, there may well be a momentary increase in the current at the precise time of the failure, and this may have affected the other bulb.
Every car I've driven with climate goes from 16 C to "Lo" usually accompanied by a fanfare of fans as it tries to cool the cabin. So to what temperature does this setting attempt to get the car to ? Read more
in the states (and using hire cars for fun) we easily got a couple of inches of ice on the front windscreen in the middle of a chicago summer heatwave by turning the air con right down, didnt take long either in the humid air
i dont think uk cars get aircon anywhere near as powerful as that and whats supplied in genuinely hot countries
My car has a Toad Ai606 Thatcham 1 remote alarm / immob / door lock fitted as aftermarket. Have had no problem since it was fitted about 5 years ago, but have lost the 2nd set of keys and remote.
Now, I went and bought a 2nd fob off you know where auctionsite, as there are instructions in the original alarm manual ( which I have, along with the PIN # ). I did something similar on a friend's Ford and it worked , however this one is more complicated , instructions to programme in a new fob are ambiguous and I couldn't do it despite an hour and several attempts - problem is you need to count flashes of the LED and it just wasn't happening ..
Have contacted the manufacturer , Toad here in the UK, alas they are only interested in selling me a 2nd fob for £65 + VAT and other extras ( when a new alarm can be had FITTED at £210 inclusive , so what a rip -off ), which I will still need to programme, so not interested - they stopped responding when I inquired if I can take it anywhere or send the good and new keys somewhere for programming ( car is a seldom used 2nd vehicle ).
Am happy to pay reasonable amounts just to get the new fob programmed - trouble is who can do it ?
anybody know ?
thanks

My old car, 2006 Avensis 2.0 diesel speedo read 62 mph when my Tomtom read 60 mph and a regular over the same route measured 108 miles on the odometer.
I took delivery of a 2009 Avensis 2.0 diesel recently, the speedo reads 65 mph when the Tomtom reads 60 mph and the regular run over the same route reads 110 miles on the odometer.
I have the Avensis T2 with 16 inch wheels, higher specification Avensis models have 17 inch wheels.
I've spoken to a main dealer who doesn't believe it's a speedo calibration issue (calibrated to the wrong wheel size) and has informed me that you are allowed 10% speedo error. If my Tomtom is 100% accurate, my new Avensis is pretty close to the 10% inaccuracy limit.
I guess the next stage is to undertake a long journey checking the distance on the Tomtom against the odometer.
Does anybody have any thoughts or comments please. Read more
you are allowed 10% speedo
error.
Vehicle construction and use regulations allow a positive 10% error, but no negative error.
This has to be good news for road safety - I just hope they allow it to be switchable ;-) Read more
Not many, few know either what ESP is, or if they have it fitted.
As you know, it's there to stop regular drivers from coming off the road when they mis-judge a bend.
Anybody who intentionally uses ESP to reach the limits of grip and then gets caught out is just as likely to be the kind of driver to over-cook it without ESP!

My son's faithful Citroen AX was rear-ended by a bunch of alcohol-using teens in a Freelander. The Freelander, as one would expect, came off better with a cracked bumper and a smashed headlight. The AX has had the rear quarter pushed into the rear wheel, the roof is creased and the driver's door jammed shut. I expect it to be written off without a moment's thought. Fortunately, he was indoors discussing the meaning of life with his girlfriend at the time. The Police have things in hand and have verified that the AX was legally parked when it was bumped. Insurance details have come to light and the Freelander user's (I hesitate to say driver as the term implies a degree of skill clearly absent in this case) insurance, Tesco, have offered a loan car to my 20 year old son.
Is there a catch ? Who is likely to be responsible for insuring the loan car ?
Any dos and don'ts in this situation ? I'm short of experience in dealing with this sort of thing ...
TIA

I am repairing/rebuilding an engine for a friend which has ingested a metal swirl flap. I was about to check the piston/valve clearances on a dry build when something occurred to me. The crankshaft has a position sensor but I can't see one for the camshaft. How does the ecu know that it should be injecting at the end of a compression stroke TDC for a particular cylinder rather than the exhaust/inlet TDC? Sorry if this is a bit long winded but how do I know it will not be 1 crank turn out of sequence? Regards. Read more
There are ways that the engine could run without a cam sensor, but it would be unusual.
What the ECU could do, during the starting cycle, is as 1 and 4 come up on compression is to fire no 1 injector. There's a 50 / 50 chance it's right, and if so, the crank will accelerate, and the ECU can detect that, firing no 3 next. If there's no crank acceleration, 180 degrees later, no.2 will be fired, and away the engine goes, with the ECU keeping count - the ECU knows the firing order, and knows where the crank is.
However, I would be much surprised if there is no cam sensor.
I have owned my 2007 model year S60 D5 SE Geartronic from new. After a few months it started making clunking noises from the suspension, usually nearside, both front and rear, but at times it comes from the offside, again both front and rear. There is no particular rhyme or reason to when it happens but it does seem more prone after heavy rain and was consistantly noisy during the snow we had earlier this year. It often happens first thing in the morning. The noise happens on all sorts of road surfaces and not, just as you might expect, on speed bumps. The Volvo garage cant find anything wrong and, apart from the noise, it drives fine. The garage say it might be stones in the suspension!! (i live in the country). This is my second S60 and i like the car but the noise is very irritating. It has now done 74000 miles and while not getting any worse it is not going away. The noises can be quite faint to being loud enough to hear over the radio and for passengers to comment and to be felt through the floor. I have not hit anything and it has always been maintained religiously, can anyone help? Read more
I suggest you do a Forum Search for the phrase 'drop link'. These are on the front anti-roll bars and can wear - probably with some help from speed humps and the like - and create a sound similar to the one you describe.
