97 1.9 Dipped beam Failure - gary923
Car :- Peugeot 306 D-turbo 1997.

Hi there. Having finished work about an hour ago I started her up and switched the lights on. At this both headlights illuminated for around a second before going out, leaving only the sidelights on.
I havn't had time to investigate the problem yet but obviously the bulbs are the first point of call.
What makes me think that this is more than a bulb problem is that they both went out at the same time.
Also, full beam works which rules out a blown fuse.

Any ideas other than blown bulbs would be much appreciated, although I m going to check them in the morning.

Regards,
Gary.

Dipped and main may each have their own fuse.

Quick update :-

Checked fuses............All in order.
Installed new bulbs...................Hey Presto!!!

What a coincidence though that both should choose to blow at exactly the same time.

The lesson is :- always eliminate the simple solution first before worrying about further complications.

Gary.

Or maybe one had already blown and you hadn't noticed.

Both blew at the same time as I was parked in an underground car park and could see the reflection of both going out at the same time within a second of one another.

Thanks for your thoughts though.

I had this experience when my car was fitted with higher output Halogen headlamp bulbs.

Well, you had just started your car so the battery voltage would be low and the neg and pos must be connected pretty well. The alternator is cut out until the engine is started and ramps up to over 13 volts/20 amps to charge the battery...if at this point there was a bad connection between the alternator and the battery but a good one to the lights all that power would come down to your headlights. I don't see how that could happen though. Have you wired up relayed superbrights or something else non-standard?

The law of averages would suggest that it is possible for both dipped beams to blow at the same time, certainly my '03 406 used to eat alternate dip bulbs virtually every week (although that car was doing 2,000 miles every 7 days). Well done for checking the simple solution first, I would have suspected the headlamp stalk unless I'd seen both beams on the wall in front of the car go bright, very bright (rather like switching xenons on) then out...

Yes Dave,

My immediate thought was an electrical problem but glad it wasn't. Had to drive the 35 mile journey home with sidelight and fog lamps on. Thank goodness I wasn't pulled.

When you get a bulb fail, there may well be a momentary increase in the current at the precise time of the failure, and this may have affected the other bulb.
