Hello all. We have just bought a fiesta style+ diesel. 1100 miles in. One teething trouble so far - passenger door lock sticking - now sorted after 10 days wait for the part.
But - we have noticed that the convex overtaking mirror is on the passenger side and not where it should be - on the drivers side. Garage says all new fiestas are like that so it must be ford policy. Doesn't seem right to me. Unsafe on motorway and inconvenient. Views anyone? Read more

Reentrant

You can get replacement mirrors (ie just the glass) in Halfords which are designed to be stuck on to broken ones. They do flat and convex-at-the end options - the latter for about £16

So you could stick a convex one onto the existing flat glass assuming the sticky pads are thick enough to take up the "gap".

I notice a dealer in Scotland selling Nissan Tiida 1.6 with warranty until Mar 2012 at 8995.

Not that I am looking atone, but there is no mention of this car on Nissans website, so where are they coming from? As far as I was aware they were not sold in Europe at all. Also anyone buying one, surely spares will be a major league PITA.
In saloon form not pretty, but the hatch looks OK and my old man had one as a hire car in South Africa last year said it was great. Seems a hell of a lot of car for the money but really curious as to where these are coming from as it really is the replacement for Almera - a segment in which Nissan stated they would no longer compete. Holdcroft Nissan main dealer in Stoke on Trent are selling all models of Tiida starting at £8995.
They come in through Northern Ireland but are first registered in the UK and have delivery mileage with full 3 year Pan European warranty. Very comfortable cars with huge boots in either saloon or hatchbacks. Worth a look at this price. Better than a used car for more money!

burntzetec

I have a 07 1.6 focus zetec and had problems with the gears slipping out of 2nd, 3rd at slow speed around town, and not being able to select reverse without double pressing the clutch. i took it to my local ford dealer, as i have only had the car from Oct 08 and it is still under warranty(Ford Direct). They had the car for a couple of days and could'nt find any faults with it. I received a service inspection sheet, that had cleared the car of any faults. Having the all clear, three weeks after i took the trip from London to Devon with my girlfriend for the easter weekend. All was fine until about an hour into the return journey while changing from 2nd to 3rd the engine revved loudly and i had no gears to select and free wheeled to a standstill. After being recovered the car is at the dealers again, who rang me saying that the clutch is burnt out and the flywheel is blown and will cost £786 + vat to repair. Do clutches just snap(no smell when it happened)? and should i still be covered? Read more

>>a lot of ex-ford direct cars are hire cars>>

I hired a 3 month old Mondeo and was driven back home by one of the hire company's sales staff. He rode the clutch for over 5 miles in heavy traffic on an incline and the smell was over-powering. When I mentioned that he was burning out the clutch he just laughed. I'll never buy an ex-rental car.

Hi,

been told that the outer cv joints on my 130PS Mondeo are worn, and need replaced. Oddly, my Haynes manual says that they are not separable from the driveshafts. But garage seem to think that they are.

Who's correct?

The country has gone "PC" mad.

I just wish that common sense would once more prevail and that "PC" would be
put into the rubbish bin of history.

I think we need to diferentiate between PC and what is required to help those less well off (in a physical sense) to have a decent life. Since I've had to push my wife around in a wheelchair I've realised just how bad access can be for those not as mobile as I, and whilst its regretable that the Gov has had to enforce by law for businesses to provide for disabled people, I can see that without those laws things would not have changed anywhere near as quickly, if at all. It does create some anomilies (our Drivers rest room has a dsiabled toilet, though a disabled person couldn't drive a train for instance), but on the whole its been a good thing.

But then again I don't regard any of the Laws relating to provision of facilities for disabled as PC. Back to the OP, it is quite possible that the person paying for the AA membership is blind and someone else drives the car for them, in which case braile would be appropriate (and I know of a case where this has happened).

I'll go back to my original point, I don't regard what the AA has done in the OP as PC.

Hello,
Anybody know how to remove the gearknob to fit a new one?
I've tried unscrewing it but it feels as if something will break before it comes off.
It is a manual and the gearknob is the original hard rubber type.
Thanks.
Mike. Read more

Motorists should face fewer red lights following the relaxation of government guidance on the flow of traffic.

Local councils can adopt "green wave" systems of sensors, where vehicles at or just below the speed limit trigger a succession of green lights.

Environmental and motoring groups say carbon emissions will be reduced.

Previously the Department for Transport (DfT) had discouraged the systems which reduce fuel use, resulting in less tax being paid to the Treasury.

But now, rather than seeing green wave systems as a "cost" to the public purse, the DfT views them as a "benefit".

There have been occasions when the road has really been empty of people.
Used to work a beat in the village here in the 60s. To break the monotony, we used to stamp on the rubber pads just when a car was coming along the other road and watch him squeal to a stop. There also used to be a garage with a big glass front window. The owner was a nasty piece of work and a police hater. He used to put up a huge pyramid of the old metal gallon oil tins in the window. A few taps on the glass with a staff had his alsation bringing them all down at 3 in the morning

There is a small collection of words and phrases that drivers of my father's generation still use, and, curiously, they're all words I've consciously never used. (It's a generational thing... :-)

throttle (rather than accelerator)
trafficators
motor car
shooting brake
to "motor" (rather than "drive", e.g. we motored to the Lake District...)
wireless
drophead (rather than cabriolet)

Any more to add to the list?
