I fitted two secondhand heads to my CX Safari diesel, providing that the head is flat (will probably need machining), you shouldn't have a problem

Evening all,

My 1.3 Fiesta finally decided that the clutch wasn't being all it could be (halfway up a hill in the Peak District, happily). I managed to coax it back home, but it was a struggle to get above 40 and pulling away took an age. Silver lining though - my better half's dad is a mechanic, and he's going to replace the clutch for the price of a crate of beer.

My question is based around some other things - when I was halfway up the hill, when the clutch finally gave up, the revs hammered up through the ceiling. Nasty smell, smoke from under bonnet etc. Stopped, and saw smoke coming from the gearbox area, and then my girlfriend ill-advisedly unscrewed the coolant reservoir, so boiling coolant had it's merry way around.

Handily, I had some coolant in the boot, but as I was topping up I noticed that the coolant had taken on a particularly brown tinge, and it made me wonder whether a full coolant drain and replacement is a sensible thing. Then I thought that if the coolant is like that, maybe the gear oil didn't particularly enjoy being boiled too? Would it be sensible to drain it whilst we're replacing the clutch?

Just as an aside, could anyone tell me the coolant capacity of a 2000 Fiesta 1.3?

Cheers
Richard

I love mine - just selling it sadly. Before I got it (it was broken so a challenge) I was sure it would be cheap Ford and rubbish. Couldn't be further from the truth - its nippy, economical and fun to drive.

Hi, just wanted some advice on my car. A little over a week ago, when changing from 1st to 2nd gear, the gear stick got stuck. I couldn't get the car out of 1st gear, although I could move the clutch pedal up and down. The gear stick would only move forward & backward, but not left and right. I have since had the gear box and clutch changed, but it did exactly the same thing when we went to test drive it. Any ideas on what else could be wrong? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Read more

Yeah, my Dad pulled the thing apart, said there was nothing jamming it. I'd have hoped the garage would have checked that before changing the gearbox, but then I guess that can be wishful thinking?

This weekend I went to Anson Engine Museum near Poynton (not far from Hazel Grove, Cheshire).
The museum has a large collection of engines, diesel, gas, free piston atmospheric etc.
At the weekend several of these were demonstrated, a number requiring propane blowtorching to pre-heat before starting, some engines are on loan from the Science Museum and Birmingham Museum, there are also sectioned models, lots of bits and pieces and documents on the history of Gardner, Mirrlees etc.

Its open most weekends from now and engines are likely to be running, check the website for how to find it.

It isn't an easy place to find. I've been past it many times but, it seems, never when it is open. I'll try again.

Hello All... I need help. Up until recently the car has been driving fine. It has always been punchy, responsive and quick... About a week ago, I have noticed a reduction in the performance; it accelerates, but not as well as it used to, infact it feels like I'm towing a trailer or a caravan, or as if there's a massive flat spot. I can hear and feel the turbo kick in at about 2200rpm, but it feels nothing like it used to... It gets up to 80-90-100 mph, and sits there comfortably, but seems to take an age to do so. I've not noticed any reduction in fuel economy, lumpy running, black smoke ( the general things you associate with injector problems ) and the car appears to run fine, its just this 'diminished' performance that's puzzling me. Can anyone help ?? Read more

Hi

The car starts well from cold and idles or pulls away as expected. Within 5 minutes it loses power and stops, with all dials moving right and left and an electrical hum evident. If the car is switched off and the ignition turned again, the chaotic dial movement continues. After 5 -10 minutes (and rising) it is possible to restart and the problem does not recur through the journey or within a few hours of stopping. It will recur after about 8 hours parked, but not always. On one recent occasion the episode occured before any progress was made. It is serviced up to date and an auto electrician has added an additional earthing strap under the bonnet. Bulb failure used to be a problem and this was suspected. However, bulbs have not failed since the auto electrician's attention some weeks ago. No bulb is switched on when the episode occurs. The car is otherwise very sound and has been in my 4 years' ownership. Thoughts welcome.

i have a 306hdi estate 2000 w plate 108,000miles. It idles erractic till it gets warm, 5-10mins then it fine. When move off it stutters between 2-4000 rpm then pulls fine. It seems fine when on a steady drive. I have changed fuel filter and checked for metal bits, there aren't any. I replaced fuel relay, the brown one near inner wing. Had all codes checked - there are no codes in ecu. The only thing i haven't changed is the pump in tank. Could this be the problem? Oh and checked for air leaks just in case, none there either. please can someone shed a light its doing my head in, thanks

Does any one know how to change a front offside fog light lens on a 2009 CR-V? Or is it a sealed unit and requires a whole new part? The lens probably was hit and cracked by a flying stone during a recent motorway run but hey these things happen. The CRV manual only refers to changing of a fog light bulb and even that looks complicated. Might have to bite the bullet and get done by a main dealer or a back street place. Help!!! Read more
