I need to change my car soon and having looked at the available options the Nissan X-trail seems to be the best match to my needs.
However, I'm a bit worried by rum reviews of turbo/intercooler and general reliability problems.
But are they really that bad? Or is it just a case of 'only those with a problem write in'?
My current car is a bit of a Friday afternoon model (VV unreliable) and I don't want to replace it with another lemon. Read more

shame it didnt happen to them pair of essex "telly cops" in their fully booted subaroo, that would of taken the smile off their smarmy faces
Does anyone know if Fiat publish any sales literature on this car?The website is tacky and has very little information on the car and when I rang my local dealer he just sent me some similar dodgy animated email attachment. I like hard facts and specs when I am considering a car and am mystified at why no brochures and printed price lists seem to be available. Fiat sales info is normally very good. Read more
I was spraying creosote on the garden fence the other day, and because of the windy day, it has splattered the car. Has anybody got any ideas how to remove the culprit? Read more
Try graffiti remover - you can get solvent free ones which use fruit acids to remove the spatter (or paint spray as my mate had done to his car by vandals) but don't leave it to stand on there or it may affect the paintwork too. Several quick applications, washing off in between is safer than one big vigorous one which overdoes it....
The North East has been shrouded in fog and mist today.
Unsurprisingly, many cars have been running with no lights or side lights only.
The weird thing is that fewer cars than usual had their fog lights switched on. Read more
Pat,
Its school half term in my part of the world, the people who cause chaos on the school run spread their chaos far and wide during the holidays.
Part of the fuse board is not live (ignition on or off) radio, alarm, central locking not working there is about 8 fuses without power to them, all fuses ok

I came back from a recent trip and left the car on the drive while I unloaded it and opened the garage. The trip computer was on 'miles remaining' and showed 310. When I switched on again, it showed 359. I don't think anyone surreptitously added a few litres to the tank, but can anyone explain how it could happen?
The car had been filled, the trip computer given a full reset and done about 40 miles with SWMBO driving (average 25 MPG, bless her. I don't know how she manages it).
I'd done a 100 mile round trip with the computer left displaying 'miles remaining'. The reading started at 306 and slowly crept up to the said 310 at the end of the journey (average now 37 MPG). Read more
I can understand the 'remaining miles' creeping up on a journey that's more economical than the previous usage, that makes sense.
What I can't understand is why the 'remainig miles' should jump by nearly fifty when it's switched off and parked.
Has anyone any experience of the longevity of the of the replacement bushes being glued in?
My daughter's thinking of buying one of these, but she knows the owner's been told it's got split rear bushes.
We were wondering if it's worth getting the modified bushes fitted or biting the bullet and getting a new subframe fitted.
If she buys it, she intends to keep it for some time. Read more
get the estate , it does not have this problem- and is far more useful IMH
Or if you insist on the HB , get a price at a reputable garage and deduct it from the offer you are to make.
BTW, these cars are really cheap now, and you should be paying a few thou for them only
Hi I have just bought the above Espace with a Diesel Filter warning light on. It states in the Manual "Electric fault or water is present in the Diesel filter" Contact your Dealer, I have just spoken to a Garage owner friend of mine and he thinks it could just need a new Diesel filter, anyboday have any thoughts.......Cheers Simon Read more
change the filter really and see what difference that makes. If still bad try changing the air and oil, start simple. Then I'd say check the fuel lines, and the air lines and intercooler after the turbo to check for any cracks or leakage. Don't always trust the lights...they want you to go in as they get the money ;)
Hope this helps
My tax and insurance both run out at the end of this month. Although this is the first time I've had tax and insurance coincident, I can't believe it's that uncommon. All I did was buy a car, start an insurance policy for it and tax it for twelve months at the same time. Lots of people must do that.
Tax disc reminder came through and I thought I'd get on with it. I have the insurance reminder too, but I plan to shop around a bit first. Since the insurance industry is quite capable from starting cover the instant they get payment, I didn't anticipate arranging new cover until towards the end of the month.
But DVLA can't do me a tax disc online or over the phone because I have no insurance cover in place for May. Never mind that it's April right now and there is no legal requirement for me to be insured in May yet. They just can't cope. Apparently, once I've bought insurance (which could, given the insurance industry's capability, quite legitimately be as late as the evening of April 30th) *and* waited for the database to update, *then* I can buy a tax disc - which will take 5 working days to arrive. I'm told that for the first few days of May, all the ANPR cameras will know to ignore my out of date tax disc because the new one's in the post from Swansea. I'll believe that when I see it!
Am I missing something, or is this monumentally stupid and unnecessary inconvenience the way things are supposed to be?

Hi,
Just found this forum.
To add to the above, I've screwed up on the tax by not knowing the Roolz too. Not expecting any sympathy on here.
My car blew up recently and I was left with no car, but found a good deal on a car which had been sitting for 2 years since the owner died. Paid cash to his son.
Insured it immediately, MOTd and called up the DVLA first thing on Monday to tax as I assumed that they could check my insurance online, which they could.
Apparently though, because I was not the registered keeper, I couldn't tax it over the phone.
I could go into a PO and use the green slip, but they don't have access to the insurance database, so I had to wait for the insurance certificate to get through.
Long story short, I got clamped in the 1 day which it took me to get my insurance cert send out by Special Delivery, which I paid to release and then produced my tax to prove that it had been paid for.
Now I get a letter one month later, saying there is a further £45 fine. Fair enough if i've broken the law.
Here's the thing. The fine only applies if I was the "keeper" of the car at the time of the offence. According to DVLA, I wasn't the keeper, hence I couldn't tax the car. The keeper was a deceased 90 year old man at this point on their records. What's the definition here?
I'm going to pay, of course, as I don't want to pay £1k in court, but wondered how I wasn't the keeper at the time, but now I'm elligible for a fine as they have decided I was the keeper.

I am on my 2nd xtrail.
My son is still running my old one.
On the 2004 model i had to have the intercooler changed, a common fault.
A new design was fitted, been perfect since.
Buy one just make sure the car has had any recalls carried out.
