Seen a used car we like on sale at £3,194. Its only a run around for the wife. We have a car to part ex and am bringing it down tomorrow for them to give a part ex price.

They say the price is £3,194 incl Vat but excludes road tax and a £49 admin charge. Stupid question but is the price the price or is there any negotiation? At £3194 I am quite happy but don't want to embarass myself or spend a few quid I don't need to.

Ditto again. But if you were just buying you would have a good chance of knocking the price down. If you want to part-ex, you are only exchanging cars, so most of your leverage has gone - you will just swop reasons why the other's car is worth less. But by all means try ...

Thought it will be appropriate to open this thread in view of recent weather.

I have no previous experience of driving in this kind of snow. Today morning I've skidded once (no damage).

So, what are the suggestions for driving in snow and slush?

I tried turning off the ESP in my Passat as I was getting fed up with the engine not revving beyond 2000rpm going up a snowy hill out of Bakewell. The wheels started spinning and the car slowed down even though the engine could more. I reingaged ESP and the speed built up again. A convincing demonstration.
My Hyundai has only ABS and I was lucky to get up an uncleared snowy hill, A5270, on the way to Buxton yesterday. The low profile tyres offer more grip than expected but keeping the revs up and sawing from lock to lock at the steering wheel kept me going .

Hi there,

Just wondered what sort of mileage people would suggest the 1.0/1.3 engines from the original Micra are capable of?

I'm looking for a cheap one in a market that seems to be astonishingly competetive...been raking through the papers on the morning they come out, and most of the cars I phone up about are already sold. The rest are owned by mad old bats who can't tell me what size of engine is in their Fiesta! I'm drifting towards the Micra because of the chain-cam engines and general jap reliability/british build quality.

There have been a few fairly cheap examples with 50-90k on them but as a high percentage of micra owners will be OAPs and people who have never had a car serviced in their life because they have only done 4k of driving over the 3 years they've had it, the low mileage doesn't straight away strike me as the most important factor. On the other hand I've found one an hour's drive away with 1L, 120k on the clock, 2 previous owners & 12 months MOT. Is it likely to cover much more ground?

Cheers,

If I was looking for a solid small jap car, id also be looking to the Daihatsu Charade late 90's and Toyota Starlet as both are pretty bombproof. Dead cheap usually too.

Without being too specific, a 'neighbour' was woken up last week by a knock on the door and a white van parked outside bearing the words 'HM Customs & Excise Fuel Testing Unit'.
It was generally common knowledge that this person was filling his commercial, and private cars, from a tank at the rear of the property.
If red diesel was being used, what are the consequences? Read more

I think your hire contract needs re-writing to the effect that a vehicle returned from hire with red will be charged a full tank/fuel system clean-out at £large - the vehicle probably is leased by the hire co., not owned, and so the ramifications of it being dipped and found with red are huge.

Can I be the first to claim a spot of the new reg?
2 Fiat based camper vans travelling south on M40 near Oxford services at about 10 am today.
Now I would have thought they would have had to be on trade plates as it isn't yet 1st March but no trade plates on the first so I did a closer look on second - definitely no trade plates.
Or am I mistaken about running an 09 plate before March 1st without trade plates?

Ive only seen two so far and both pretty unusual!

- Focus ST in White came thundering past me on the A19 - looked very nice as well
- MG TF in Grey in Yarm highstreet - surprised to see one so soon and would rather have seen one in Orange!!

I have a 'free to air' satellite set up to install, thanks to a generous friend. Trouble is, I have followed the installation and tuning instructions to the letter, including discovering my longitude and latitude for correct orientation and elevation and I've spent hours swinging the dish around, but I get no result at all. All I want is one particular French channel, Arte. Does anyone know if it's possible to test a satellite receiving 'head' before I go off mine? Read more

The friend is probably talking of a carbon monoxide alarm. It's a sensible idea to get one fitted.

>>
To stop her worrying, buy a carbon monoxide detector.
IMO she will not totally believe any statement about it is not needed.
It is a small investment not measured in £££s
I totally agree with AE
>>...- tho to be honest less likely now she has a new boiler.

Most domestic boilers are "room sealed / balance flue" types.
So provided they are correctly installed & maintained the boiler takes no air from the room and no combustion products can enter the room.

This is just plain stupid. He must have realised the danger he was in as soon as he made the wrong turn and the danger he was causing other road users. Yet he carried on.

He should have prosecuted and a message sent out that NO ONE is above the law when it comes to dangerous activity on our roads. Read more

You've just described what you think is the problem. Firstly though, we need your symptoms.

What makes you think there's something wrong?
