The Grey Man

Hi

I took our 30k mile 2004 Jazz in to the local main dealer for one of these free winter check ups. Advised that require new front pads as only 20% left (not surprising as these have never been replaced yet) but also that the front discs are "lipped" and also need replaced.

Question - what are "lipped" discs and is it normal to require new discs at this low mileage. Is it inadvisable to replace pads but retain discs in "lipped" state.

Certainly want braking performance to be optimum so won't penny pinch if this does need done, £215 quoted for front pads and discs.

Would appreciate any advice given. Read more

How else could they squeal?

My wifes Rover 25, 03 plate. 39k.
Got this car when there was 3k on the clock and it has been looked after well.
It doesnt get used on long journeys, mainly to work, 12 miles round trips, any time we go into town 5 mile round trip, and general running about.

Problems are...

No heating coming out of vents for about 20 mins.

Temp gauge hits the roof, then comes down again. (That last for a few seconds).

Fan still running even when engine is turned off. (About 2 mins).

When driving feels like a loss of power for a split second. (Dosent happing that often).

Anyone no what the problem might be?

Thanks for any help.

Did it have a coolant change by any chance?

Sorry for the late reply.

It did. But I have been told its not that. A Combustion Leak Test? has been done and failed. Said it is probaly the HG gone.

Hi, can anyone give me a little advice abut my peugeot.

When started from cold the engine nock's quite loudly and shakes at idlle. To me it seams like it may not be firing on all cylinders. The revs also fluctuate ever so slightly.

This continues when idling untill the car is throughly warmed up or the revs are raised above idle.

When the car is up to temperature there is no problem apart from the engine nocking slighly more then normal under idle.

Thanks in advance form any advice you may have. Read more

There's a brilliant diesel tune/garage in Egham, well Englefield Green, Armstrong or Albert Road I think that refurb injectors and can do it while you wait if you book.

I got a Laguna 1.9dci just 9 months ago. Lovely car drove well and was loveley to drive in the area i live which is mainly country roads. It pulled my caravan without a moan from it. BUT in November the drivers window started to open and shut on its own. then sometimes when i tried to close the window it went down insted of up. took it to garage and £200 later it was working, for one month only. the next thing was the rear axel bushes went that was £150. then to top it all on the 30th of Jan was taking my son to nursery when a noise started from the front. on my way back home the noise got really bad and the car went into full revs. YES THE TURBO HAD BLOWN. I quickly stalled the car and called out the breackdown. to cut the rest short, the cost of repairs is in excess of £2000. new Turbo, intercooler, and the garage expects that the eng has also sufferd damage. as its a 52 2002 its not worth the cost. Trade in value is only £2100, so I sold it to the garage for £300. Now gone back to the trusted Mondeo...will never have a renault again ever.... I surgest people dont touch them, unless you have a never ending pit of money Read more

I'd agree from my work's experience of running a large fleet of 2004 54 Lagunas and Meganes that they did get better.

However, they were far from perfect. Some of the cars were OK, some were a nightmare and regularly causing problems with electrics, gearboxes and oil leaks. Not to mention more trivial stuff like interior trim falling off if you so much as breathe at it.

My 2005 Megane was complete trash though, so I wouldn't blindly accept that Renault suddenly managed to build decent cars out of nowhere.

Fingers crossed the new generation have finally nailed all these silly problems.

A friend has just bought a fault code reader and offered me a lunchtime diagnosis (nothing known to be wrong, I'm just interested what's on there)!
Does anyone know where the diagnostic socket is on this model?
I also have a 2000 1.25 Fiesta, and guess that it might be in the same location, as many things are similar on the two cars.

Hi all,

I felt pretty gutted today. Vagcom through up a fault on a cylinder glow plug so I thought I would go ahead and change it (done it before so know how easy it should be). Easily got the old glow plug out. Triple checked the fit on the new glow plug but something went disastrously wrong.

Torqued up the new plug to 15nm and noticed the plug wasn't fully seated in the cylinder block. So tried turning the driver anti-clockwise to have another go. Half way round the pressure became too much for the new plug and it broke about half a cm up from the head. The electrode is intact, but the shaft just below the nut bit on the plug is broke, meaning the nut now turns with no force. There is no visible leakage when I start the car though...at the moment.

I hate the fact the plug is broken and am wondering if anyone else has had this problem and has successfully extracted the plug without taking the whole head off?

To clarify, there is about half a cm of thread from the glow plug visible above the cylinder head, but how would I get a good bite on that to extract the plug?

I am too scared to break the electrode off and try to extract the remaining plug, as there is a large possibility I will make things 10 times worse. I am looking for a garage or someone that has experience of dealing with this who is in the North West, to give an opinion of what to do.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Read more

hi i have done the same the nut on the top of the plug turns but is snapped . been to see a deisel guy and told me about 350 and the head will have to come off. but he also said you can just leave it ,it wont cause any probs to the motor its not going anywhere.
the guy also told me that all rover diesel motors only have 3 heater plugs as the pump is in the way so they left out the 4th.
so mine is still as it is runs fine, lot of money just to have the car perfect.

Hi

I am new to the forum. I am torn between these 2 cars.
I know little about cars so any help would be appreciated.

Focus is 54 reg, 1.6 tdci (how many hp?), 34k miles, Zetec spec.
C4 is 05 reg, 1.6 hdi (90hp), 44k miles, SX spec. Price being £500 more than the Focus.

I do over 20k miles a year so would prefer to have a diesel.

Which one is more reliable? Is C4 more economical? I heard before modern diesel cars have some sort of filter fitted to make it more 'green' and this could make cars a bit unreliable, is this true?

Is £5400 a good price to pay for a Focus?

Thanks. Read more

Thanks for all the responses!

I went for the Focus, did a test drive and really liked it. To be honest anything is better than my current 03 reg Getz with 70k miles. I am not saying Getz are boring, in fact they are very reliable. I just need something with a bit more power and space; Focus I've just bought was a good value and the fact that I've seen a lot of Focus on the road, assured me that they are nice motors.

I was a bit sceptical at first after I've seen quite a lot of bad reviews on the internet regarding the diesel engine, but quite a lot of people convinced me that the car is brilliant and reliable!

Thanks again everyone...

My mate did parcel delivery for a while, and their company sent all their leased Sprinters back early because the reliability was shocking. They weren't half quick though!
They had best luck with Vivaros and Transits.

Until I checked the batteries just now, I had not realised the one in the N70 was so much down on power. So the old 6310i had a lot more capacity in the battery and ran a basic operating system and no colour screen, no wifi, etc. No wonder it was better!

Not wishing to hi-jack the first thread on this question but would wish to raise the same question of " What is the legal situation? "

I live in a housing estate just across the road from the large factory where I work. I use a pedal cycle to go too and from.

However, the firm is trying to get everybody back onto a single day shift ( it remains to be seen how far they will get down this road ) and with an ever increasing number of contractors appearing on site, car parking will become a major issue.

The last time that anything like this happened ( admittedly this was many years ago ) all the local roads, residential parking areas, grass verges, any hard standing private or not, became fair game and blocked garages were an every day occurence.

I can see this starting again, so would wish to ask what the current legal situation will be in these cases?

Thank you.
