Hi
I've had my car in the garage because of a engine warning light. The computer brings up a problem with one of the cylinders, Its not getting fuel or something. The mechanic said he would check the wiring first and tells me its a bad earth and that it has damaged the fuel injector. Now Im an aircraft engineer and I realise that whilst an earth could easily rupture a component but I've also had it where the component has survived. Is it possible he dosn't want to charge me only for fixing the wiring and is trying to include the injector or is being honest and changing the injector because its blown? Has anyone had this fault before, thanks

Thanks Mate
Right, he has since explained that it was actually a short between two cables going to the injector. So it wasn't a short to earth after all. I expect he is telling the truth as it all makes since. Cost me £244 inc labour and parts. Thanks again

Dear Backroomers
A4 1.9 TDi (130) is due cambelt change (second change at 100K miles) but what else should be changed at same time?
I recall reading about things like tensioner, other belts, water pump etc etc.
Which ones are 'strongly recommended' and which are 'you might as well use the opportunity to change...'?
Many Thanks Read more
I would add - check the radiator and the rad hoses while they are exposed. The supports for the rad used to have a lump of foam that held water against the rad and led to corrosion failure. While the front end is off is a good time to check this carefully.
And the bearing on the fan (assuming the b6 is like the b5 with the viscous fan)
I'm shortly looking at a 2001 Forester Turbo auto with a genuine 35k which has a professionally fitted Prins multi-point lpg system fitted. Now I'm not interested in the pros and cons of lpg in general, I've made my own mind up on that, but I've not had or known anyone with a turbo engine that's been converted. Are there any potential problems over a n/a car? Subaru will do a similar conversion from new (or did until recently) so I'm assuming there are no problems but does anyone know any better? Read more
remember the conversion is only as good as the garage carrying out the work -
choose spec model etc with care
Good reason to do it youself.
Is the Prins system better than any of the other systems or just dearer?

hi
if there are any police officers on this site can you please tell me when an officer using the computer in a typical police van looks up insurance details for a particular driver can he see the conditions of that insurance, ie can he see whether that driver can drive other cars third party or not or does is just come up with insurance yes / no
i was given FPN for driving my friends car with no insurance but i explained i have full comprehensive on my own car and that allows me to drive any other car third party but he insisted that i do not have insurance. i want to make a formal complaint against the officer since i am fully insured as i had believed but was told that he may not have known for sure and thats why he issued the ticket.
if thats the case then i suppose he had a point but if he could see that i did actually have third party insurance then he only gave me the ticket with malicious intent and for that i will expect an apology. you can read the whole saga on

many thanks in advance for your comments.

The MID was set up solely as a response to the the requirement of the European Law as memtioned in the last paragraph you quote from. There was no other reason the Motor Insurance Database was set up as the Insurers would not have done this without being forced to
"The MID also helps the UK comply with the 4th EU Motor Insurance Directive, which requires that insurance details of all vehicles in member states can be easily accessed by a national information centre. In the UK, this role is carried out by the MIB via the UK Information Centre."
The MID Website you are quoting from also contains this information
The 4th Directive was introduced to make it easier for those injured in accidents whilst visiting another EU state to receive compensation by:
* Requiring there to be an Information Centre who can identify the insurer of the other party from the registration plate;
* Allowing the injured party a direct right of action against the insurer;
* Requiring the insurer to nominate a representative in the injured party?s own country who has sufficient powers to settle the claim;
* Ensuring that there is a compensation body to pay the claim in the event that the insurer cannot be identified or is manifestly dilatory in settling a claim.
These measures introduced by the directive compliment the arrangements of the Green Card system which ensures the ready settlement of claims in the injured party?s own country where the other party comes from a different country.

I bought my i10 in July 08, it's a Style 1.1 in Mica Black so unfortunately I cop for the £120 VED .. but it's still reasonable in my opinion.
However, I do a daily commute of 40 miles. The first piece of bad luck was a small crack in my windscreen - the Dealers/Autoglass could not supply a replacement for approx 4 weeks
during which time the crack spread rather alarmingly across the screen.
The second event related to the vehicle's battery - this gradually became weaker and weaker until it let me down in the work's car park !
Thanks to the 5 year RAC membership that I got with the car I was able to get back to the dealers. Tthe problem was that the dealers battery tester said that it was ok - while the RAC bloke said it was kaput. The RAC chap kindly rang the dealer and supplied documentary evidence saying the battery was u/s. The dealer accepted this and the hunt began for a spare battery.... not ONE was to be found in the country !! - the dealer retrieved one from a brand new i10 that had been delivered that afternoon !
Also I have recently discovered that the tyre size is VERY rare - being told by one distributor that the size is unique to the i10 ?
I can't say I'm 100% chuffed with the vehicle ... especially with the availability of spares - but the dealer has been very good & I'm happy with their service. These experiences would not deter me from buying another Hyundai.

Hi everyone!
Wife was driving home yesterday when car lost all power and ground to a halt! Towed car home and now it won't start. The engine cranks but does not fire up.
Checked the plugs were firing, checked cambelt was still ok, checked all fuses all ok, put a gallon of petrol in as the guage was showing a quarter full (just in case fuel guage was faulty!)
I've had the car for nearly 5 years and it has been regularly serviced and belts and pulleys changed. It has been running great, has 92K on the clock.
Any ideas greatly appreciated!

I'm not having a police bash here, but I don't how anyone, especially someone with advanced training, could think it's safe to drive at that speeds in those conditions.
Apparently, he's claiming that he was driving at an appropriate speed for the conditions. Read more
maybe another angle to the debate
www.times-series.co.uk/news/4221235.130mph__not_ex.../
I appreciate this one was not in the rain...but it was on a 50mph limit road....and a motorcyclist died...however, the motorcyclist chose to flee and crashed all on his own, albeit he knew the police cars wouldn't be far behind
my reason for posting this, is not automatic support of the officer who drove at 130mph in the rain, (I don't know all the circumstances..and the Judge would have) but in an attempt to add to the debate and ensure there is a balanced viewpoint put forward, including the angle that sometimes the speed can be needed and to a degree can be acceptable. I detect an increasing viewpoint, often from people who have no knowledge of high speed driving... that 'all speed is wrong'.... and this viewpoint CAN include the court system.
My view is close regulation by all means, strict guidelines etc...but keep a check on the ill informed hysteria
Does anyone else think these are not set accurately?
There are some of these flashing signs along the road from Frimley to Ash Vale, Surrey and assuming my speedo over reads and even when using my TomTom satnav, these things seem to light up when i'm just a smidge over 30.

They have had to remove some of these signs in our locality since the idiotic youth were having competitions trying the set the highest speed read.
One just down the road from us has been carefully located behind a tree canopy. From April to November the leaves stop it working....

black plastic housing on front lower part of engine. Be very carefull how you place the rubber O ring on the housing when you refit. Use grease on the o ring when refitting.If you place it in the wrong position it will blow out when driving resulting in oil loss & if you don't spot the oil light a siezed engine.
