Hello,
Is replacing the ignition lock on our 306 a big or expensve job? We've had problems for a few days whereby on sometimes, but not every time, it is impossible to turn the ignition off and remove the key.
The car's been to the garage where they removed the lock, cleaned and lubrucated it and all seemed well for a couple of days.
However, the problem's back and I think the best option is to have the ignition lock replaced.
Before we do so, is there any tips that the panel can provide, or an idea of the cost before we go cap in hand to the dealer.
Thanks in anticipation

Christmas Eve 1990. Nearly five hundred miles from home, 30 miles to go to the relatives we were due to stay with. It was 4.30 pm. A last present is required. A swift diversion into a city centre to catch the shops before they close. Park on a meter. Car full of holiday kit and presents. ( A then one year old 1989 BMW 318i 2 door if it matters )
Present bought. Time now 5.00. Dark. Get back to car to complete journey to rural location. Turn engine on.........nothing. Try again.........nothing. Call AA. Wait for ages. AA man declares nothing to be done other than relay car to BMW garage forecourt.
Time now 8.00pm. Standing on forecourt of deserted BMW dealers with car full of kit and fairly ticked off wife.
Try to get taxi to take us remainder of journey. It's Christmas Eve....."no chance mate"
Call hosts from call box ( no mobile in those days ) "We've all been drinking, sorry"
Try calling car hire companies. All closed. Have brainwave. Get taxi to airport. Trawl round rapidly closing car hire desks. "sorry sir, nothing left". Last desk, shutters coming down, plead with lady. "Well, let's see, ah yes we do have just the one Ford Escort left".......
Praise the Lord !!!!!
Never has anyone been so happy to pay so much for the use of a duck egg blue base model Escort 1.3

TomTom are giving breakdown cover with the XL Assist package - As my insurance is due in Jan and I have breakdown cover on two cars - SWMBO has just replaced Yaris and new car comes with 3yr AA cover so now I only need cover for one car - Has anyone bought the XL with cover and if so does it include recovery or is it just assist - I have trawled net all day looking for details of this cover but nothing has come up.

doh !!!!
Sorry dxp - if I had read your post correctly it would have been obvious to me that the Yaris has just been replaced.
Engine (1.8 petrol) rattly/tappety? On cold start which improves as heats up. Also noisy, similar noise over 2500 revs. Fuel economy and performance seem ok, recently had oil change with right oil but has not improved. Car has done 97,000 with little service history after 60,000.
Also does not start easily from cold, sometimes needs a 2nd turn of the key. Any ideas? Read more
Maybe time for slightly thicker oil?
5/40 is a possible for it, should not affect tappets considering the mileage done.
My wife's honda jazz mists up very quickly in this damp cold weather, front screen and side windows. I have read the honda response on HJ's review page, and just wondering how bad it has to be before new winscreen seals are required. On long journeys it's a pain to have the heating /AC on hot all the time. Otherwise the car is fine, has anyone had a different response from Honda.
Thanks Graham Read more
Our 2003 Jazz began to show this problem earlier this year.
Replacing the cabin filter improved the situation a great deal and should be an easy job. The filter is behind the glovebox.

I think in the UK you would need the correct Medical Waste Processing Certificate and the same would go for virtually any class of waste. I don't think the law would stop you from using it to propel are car, but there would probably be all sorts of hygiene and biohazard rules to comply with.

Hi - newbie here needing some advice/reassurance!
Had rear impact on my '08 model 4x4 - my vehicle struck on rear drivers side wheel by another driver (low speed impact). No panel damage. COuldn't see any damage then realised wheel at an angle and steering wheel offset to the right.
Car now been examined by engineer prior to insurance repair. I've been told it's rear subframe damage and that it's a "big piece of metal" that just slots in and no big deal. Also been told there's no chassis damage but this will only be confirmed 100% when the new part is fitted as it won't slot in if chassis bent.
Firstly, is this serious as i was expecting a snapped control arm or something similar given the low speed impact? Or is rear subframe a term used to cover any rear suspension damage, even if minor?
secondly, why can they not say for certain now that there's no chassis damage?
thirdly, can someone explain the repair process in laymans terms? Is it easier to replace a subframe on modern cars than to mess about with individual suspension components?
Just a bit paranoid that the damage isn't being under/over played.
Any advice/views much appreciated Read more
The point I was trying to make (unsucessfully!) was that the fitting of the new subframe only confirms that the mounting points are are aligned wrt to each other, ie it will not show up anytwist or similar in the shell. I suppose it all depends on how rigidly the subframe is fixed to the body, and the angle of the impact .

Sounds silly but how do you check the oil level? If I leave the car overnight and check the dipstick then the oil level is barely on the dipstick. If However I reinsert the dipstick at that point I get the correct measure. How can that be? Engine is the 1.8 petrol.
On another topic does anyone know the minimum thickness of the disks please? Read more
bigT is spot on. There was a service bulletin for SAABs on how to dip the oil which explained just this. If you extract the dipstick and take a reading and then put it back in and take another the sump seem to have self filled between the readings. It is just the air trapped in the tube, keeping the level down, until you take out the dipstick and try again. The dipstick reads the level in the tube it is sits in and not the level in the sump, until the dipstick is removed when they equalise.

Central Heating Combi Boiler packs in and it's below freezing. Damned thing's only two years old and I don't rate my chances of getting an engineer out before Monday. Fortunately I have a very warm wife so probly sped the next two days in bed.
