I am in Vietnam for 3 weeks. The driving has to seen to be believed. A full report when I get back in the UK.
I understand Top Gear has a piece on Vietnam coming up shortly - should be interesting!
It's 29 degrees C here in Saigon.
Happy Christmas everyone.

Hi
I have a 2003 TDCi mondeo registered June 2003 but with an early engine.
This is a standard 115 2.0litre
Mine is pre-computer which came in after June, I think. So mine is based on calculator on every fill.
I get mid 40's around town and max of 54 on motorways. I am very light on the right foot and never stray above 75 on motorways. (most motorway driving is company miles and I get 49p per mile, makes sense to eek it out a bit).
I have done 70K

In August 07 we had both cars stolen by armed robbers in a really nasty incident (I think the original thread can be found by a Forum search "Both cars stolen last night" - over a year ago.... but not sure) and the response and support on this forum was fantastic giving me and my family some real comfort.
We just had word from the police that the robbers have been sent down for 11 years !
I guess this won't mean 11 years inside but it does bring about a sense of closure.
I got a letter from the police this week as well saying I can now go and collect my clothes that were worn during the incident.
Then I noticed an article in my local paper confirming all this - the same gang were responsible for 70+ offences with a total haul of over £500,000 - so it just goes to show there was nothing personal in their attack.
Anyway, onwards and upwards from here I suppose.
Cheers

A couple of 19-year-olds, a 20-year-old, and two 23-year-olds.
These are just boys, really, and all will have to be released sometime.
I'm afraid the good people of the North West can look forward to becoming their victims again and again in the coming years.
Might not be exactly the same type of crime, but I'll wager several of these kids will go on to become prolific offenders in one way or another.
It's a depressing thought.
Motorists face £60 fines and three points on licence for minor accidents according to the DT.
This means even slight knocks can get you points - this is with a view to freeing up Police from investigating, reporting and charging drivers.
I would think this could give the police less time for serious offences. How?
If you have a bump currently no police will attend unless there is an injury- normally drivers only exchange names, address, Ins Co etc - with the proposed change in the law the Govt will be keen to have police attend as the Treasury gets the £60/£100 fines.
More ££££s driven tax raising rather than policing in my opinion Read more
A day as the sole member of a skeleton staff gave me a bit of time to look into this
The proposal is in the same consultation paper as the stuff about drink/drugs driving and speeeding that we discussed at some length when the DfT released it a month ago. The paper as published can be found here:

Not clear why the careless driving bit has just hit the press - probably lazyjournalism/winter sillly season news drought leading to relaince on press releases from the RAC foundation or another pressure group.

Now you've got the file(s) on Ubuntu just make sure they are accessible to Windows
and book back into that and use Movie Maker?
Better than that - just got transfer working in Windows. Firewire interface was being monopolised by the network controller, so disabling the 1394 connection in Network Connections solved the problem. Movie Maker is capturing a DAT as I write this.
Still got the issue of not having internet access and firewire at the same time. Need to persuade SWMBO that we need a new motherboard (and try to slip in a new CPU/HD/graphics card without her noticing)...
My 52 reg S60 has broken another boot strut. This happened on both sides when the car was new, and I had them replaced under warranty. Now, five years on, it's happened again - the plastic socket on the slidey end has come apart and is no longer secure on the knob that protrudes from the bodywork.
Looking at it, it seems to me that it should be a simple job to replace - get new strut from parts specialist near my office, maybe a tap with a mallet to remove the unbroken end from its knob, then the same in reverse to push the new one into place. Is this so, or am I missing something terrible that's known only to Volvo main dealers?

Just to put this to bed, I got the part from the dealer (who'd rung to say it was in) and paid on collection, not in advance. Removing the old strut took a couple of minutes' proggling with a screwdriver to release the spring clip from the remaining good end, then a tap with an 8oz hammer got the new one securely into place.
And, what do you know: each socket of the new strut already had a dab of grease inside!
Weird (and alarming) one on Monday morning. Was trundling south at about 0820, enjoying the Christmas-induced quietness of the J10-J9 stretch, when I saw one of the roadside matrix boards display something I hadn't seen before - and don't want to see again.
20
Oncoming vehicle
Passing junction 9, no-one else seemed to be slowing to anything like 20, but I got myself into lane 1 and matched speed with an HGV a comfortable distance ahead, making sure I had as good a view as I could get. A police car had joined ahead of me at the junction and set off southward with blue lights flashing.
I kept this up until somewhere near J8, when the centre matrix board changed from 20 to 'End', and went on my way at a more normal speed. I saw nothing else unusual, and didn't see the police car again, so I wonder if anyone here was ahead of me, or coming north (preferably on the northbound carriageway!) and knows any more about what happened. Thanks to everyone for some interesting comments and insights. Might even try Focus's link to find out what happened in this case.

I have just bought a 1998 s reg 2.0 di ls astra. It is reported to have a problem with the diesel pump. It turns over but wont start. there is power reaching the pump.I have attached a code reader. It is showing no code faults at all!! would this be the case if the pump was faulty, or should i be seeing a code. Could it be anything more simple , the mileage is 118k.
Thanks Mark

Hi
I have just sold my 02 plate astra in a private sale. I took the new owner for a test drive and he was happy with the car. He has just called to say the car has broken down. Whats my legal situation on this. Is it sold as seen. Ive never had any trouble with the car in the past.
