One of my favourite ever JC pieces was Motorworld, it was from around 1996-1998 and one of them featured Vietnam. It was very interesting as he was saying its now full of bikes but in ten years time the car will be king, well ten years time was two years ago? Is this now the case? I am really looking forward to the Top Gear piece, I love developing countries take on motoring and I bet it is a lot more fun that is in this dump (UK).

Rattle,
Our country is a wonderful place, we have heritage, history and customs going back as far as books can tell us.
Get out into the country and find magical beauty, and peace and quiet, no better place on the Earth.
We have a rich mixture of people, of all 4 countries that comprise great Britain, with their own differing traditions, characteristics and ways of life, long may they live and continue.
We may have lost the plot for the last 40 years or so, and by our own stupidity allowed idiots to run the place, well i didn't, but as a nation we have the Govt we deserve most of the time.
This is still a wonderful place to live, please don't call my country a dump.
Rant over.

I couldn't put it better than Bill Bryson in "Notes from a Small Island"...
"Here is a country that fought and won a noble war, dismantled a mighty empire in a generally benign and enlightened way, created a far-seeing welfare state - in short, did nearly everything right - and then spent the rest of the century looking on itself as a chronic failure.
"The fact is that this is still the best place in the world for most things - to post a letter, go for a walk, watch television, buy a book, venture out for a drink, go to a museum, use the bank, get lost, seek help, or stand on a hillside and take in the view."
(It's just the everyday reality of driving that does most people's heads in!!)

Excuse me if I disagree then.
When I was growing up, this was the best country, by far. We have gone backwards, others forwards, result = not in front any more.
We have some great scenery, but very little distance between 1 built up area and the next in the majority of the land.
Over population is the problem (imo). But there are better places now to email, post a letter, go for walk, venture out for a drink, use a bank, seek help and especially stand on a hillside and take in the view.
I missed out watch tv ( i dont much because I hate soaps and celebrity programmes ) so you can judge that, and museums, i am not so sure but its close! But venture out for a drink (at night in a town?) and a hilside without population in sight is getting harder. But banks? have you been in 1 in Germany? they treat you as a person!
Not quite a dump here, but certainly not as good as it was, unless my rose tinted specs are wearing out of course?

I think it depends on where you live. I find Northants far more sparely populated than West Sussex which is where I grew up and I rather love the countryside around here.
There are places where you can go 15-20 miles and not hit a town which is in my book, a great thing and makes for some very curious and isolated little villages that are lovely to go and see.
My other half and I have had many lovely Sunday drives to these places.
Its really not that bad yet, atleast not here.

Corruption, HJ, like too many places round the globe unfortunately and not all in the 'developing' countries either.
|
Count your blessings, HJ!
I've experienced the joys of visiting the third world, where extreme poverty and extreme opulence live cheek-to-cheek.
I saw more top-end cars - lambos, Ferraris, Rollers, Bentley's AMGs etc etc etc in a week in Lagos than I've seen in 15 years in Cape Town.
Yet scores of kids follow the bulldozers across the rubbish tip, in the hope of finding something which has been discarded by somebody else.

If you don't like the UK, then the world is your lobster.

If Top Gear can be believed then Vietnam is full of Honda C90s carrying family's of four!
I knew I'd kept a link somewhere!!

Harumph - we're trying to book a holiday in Vietnam/Cambodia for the end of Jan - Hope TG makes it look a bit off-putting, don't need a rush on flights with the associated rise in seat costs as a result of the show.
OTOH, I'm very interested in reading about Vietnam so am keen to hear again from drbe!

Apparently we have to watch 39 steps tonight instead. Seems there's some bloke called Rupert Toogoodlooking-Forhisowngood in it. SWMBO has insisted. Three line whip.
Ah well there's always BBCiplayer when she's at work tomorrow!
|
My giddy aunt - it should be called the 39 remakes. It gets more and more boring each time.

Yeah but that fella makes her fruity so.....
Sorry Jezza!

Yes, the original is still the best and still only a shadow of the book. I've had the comment about Rupert thing but I'm afraid it went straight past me and I've just seen the magic recording device being set to record it :-)
And this relates to Vietnam because, errr, the best boy (?) on the production set of 39 Steps is Vietnamese. Not many people know that! The mods are probably warming up for their New Year's Eve party. I hope.

iPlayer has been great - sorry to say me & my better half were watching the Strictly Weakest Link in my iPod touch iPlayer last night as we'd forgot to tape it (well, Sky+ it). Very clever technology methinks.
I see Clarkson is also on never mind the buzzcocks - not a programme I ever watch but might give it a punt tonight....er, um, motoring link, er - rolls royce in swimming pool?
|
I stayed up on Xmas day to watch who do you think you are. with Clarkson, which was advertised on the on-screen display, and next thing, they changed the schedules, and there was some other tat on instead! Grrr!
However, the past few days there's been some really good motoring related TV here - Overhaulin, Chop Shop, Wheeler Dealers etc.
