hi all

i have a peugeot 406 rapier, 2001 (y) and 1.8l.

every now and again the speedo stops working, the fuel guage dies, and the whole dash will reset itself as if you turned the key on and off, and you get the oil level indicator and milage to next service on the lcd display. also get random 'brake fluid level low' caption on the radio/clock display and handbrake light flashes!! the interesting thing is that each of these faults appear to have a mind of their own and happen individually, and cannot be replicated! also the trip computer freezes up when the speedo or fuel guage dies!
i have removed the dash and checked the soldering as suggested in other posts.
i have also had garage diagnostic work carried out and they confirmed that the speed and fuel sender units are working but (sods law) they could not replicate the faults!!!!
other posts suggested changing the interface unit but apparently my car doesn't have one!! have also checked all power supplies and all appears ok!

my inckling is that its the dash as this is the only common thing for all the faults. just wondering if anyone else has had any experience similar to this!?!

cheers

It only seems to exist on the 2.1, on other 406s it's either dodgy joins on the dash (which you've eliminated) or the sender. Breakers?

Seriously,

I have heard that the tolls have increased recently. A car, after 6am is now 1.50. Not sure how much extra the trailer will be though.

Posting on behalf of a colleague. A single press of the key fob opens drivers door, subsequent presses do not open the other 3 doors as expected.

The other three doors can be opened once in the car by pressing the central locking switch in the car.

His local VW garage have quoted £70 to have a look + any cost to fix

Not sure about the MK4 Golf, but is the key behaviour programmable? And if so, can it be programmed to only open the drivers door?

the timing of your "two presses" has to be spot on. - you need to practise it.

Looking for some help on a choice of car for my 81 year old mum, who's recently left hospital with a knackered left leg and severely decreased mobility.

She's now going to need a small automatic, five door car with enough space for a fold-up wheelchair if she eventually needs one. Her current car is a 02 1.0l five door Yaris with 60k on the clock, and she'd like something similar about two years old of a similar size. Ease of getting in and out would be preferable.

Any ideas of a) options for a car, and b) a very ballpark figure on what I could expect in PX for the Yaris?

Thanks in advance! Read more

In view of the above and her age do bear in mind that DVLA have to be informed of any disability likely to cause the driving of a vehicle by her to be a source of danger to the public .

A matter to be considered for discussion with her Consultant/GP ?.

I have a W reg 2151 diesel MB Vito - on cold start, dashboard repeatedly lisghts up and switches off - all warning lights and dials. It does this for around 10 mins until warmed up, when it works fine. On one occasion, no response fom starter at all for about 10 mins, but then started fine - does any of this involve the immobiliser or are they separate problems? Mostly the van runs fine despite the dashboard. What can I do to cure the dash problem?

thanks

i have a vito 2001 with same poblem. but now the whole unit does not work at all.
all tho i have nt cured the problem yet i have been told its commen.
if the radio is nt the factory fitted one ie some one changed it at some piont check the wires as vito have a speed volume wire which slighty increses the volume when your speed picks up if fitted to different stero can cause speedo clocks to be come faultly.
all so been told that complete speedo unit does fail after 10 years due to poor ciriut board at rear of clocks .

good luck

Hi All,

Anybody know what protocol (i.e. CAN, ISO15765-4 (CAN), ISO14230-4 (KWP2000), ISO9141-2, J1850 VPW) etc that the 66kw ABS Petrol engine - single point injection ECU would talk?

I am after something to read/graph/record/etc the live data (TPS,O2,CKS,etc) from the car. I've looked at VAG-COM but its a little on the expensive side....

Looking at the ELMSCAN 5 products based on the ELM electronics IC.

Cheers,

ah ok - its KWP-1281 (used on VAG till year 2000 - then it went to KWP2000)...

Hi all,

I'm writing this from work as I stayed behind at 6pm to quickly replace the rear brake shoes on my Escort (1997/R 1.8 16v Ghia X 5 door hatch, no ABS). I'm quite mechanically adept but haven't worked on drum brakes in about 15 years. I am using a Haynes manual for guidance.

I have changed the offside shoes but when I refit the drum to the hub, the drum will only rotate freely through 180' before stopping with a clonk. When turning the drum the other way the same thing happens. I have figured out that the leading shoe is slipping downwards when I refit the drum, almost to the point that the top of the leading shoe has slid completely off the piston.

I've checked, double checked and triple checked, and it appears I have assembled the brake shoes, springs, clips etc correctly. The handbrake is adjusted right off and the self-adjustment mechanism is set as far in as it will go, to prevent the drum from fouling the shoes on refitting.

What am I missing? (Apart from my dinner!)

Many thanks in advance.

Dave TD.

Long shot. The retaining pins and springs have been re-fitted have they, the lavk of these can cause the shoes to tip rub on the drum and push the show down. Regards Peter

Hi

We need a new family car
We are a one car family so it must be a do-it-all

Since we bought the last one we have acquired 2 kids and a horse

The main driver is a keen petrolhead
The rest of the family just want something comfortable to potter around town and go away for the weekend in

The complicating factor is that it now needs to be able to tow as well as traverse a steep muddy rutted rocky farmyard on a regular basis, this is currently destroying our present car

Im at a loss as to what will fit the bill

An Audi Allroad seems obvious but until this month they fail miserably on CO2 emmissions and hence VED

I want a 6-18 month old car to lessen the depreciation shocker
It will be kept for several years so after I buy it Im not massively worried about further losses
On the other hand it must be reliable (bye bye Disco3) because as its our only car we just cant have it laid up for days on end when it breaks down

Budget flexible
30k should buy most things I can think of at 18 months old

The Audi is the safe option if a little dull
A stonking V8 (petrol or diesel) will sort my midlife crisis even if its a 4x4 - I dont care about VED or running costs if its 'cheap' to start with as it will be kept for years

And a knackered Defender and an A6 wagon etc is an option we have considered but we really only want one car :)

Any ideas - Im spoiled for choice in the current market
Anything to a 65k Merc GL or a RR can be had for a stupendous discount at the age Im looking at, the thing with the RR would have to be reliability...... Read more

Just to clarify, a 'horsebox' is a motorised vehicle, whilst a towed thingy is called a 'trailer'.

Part of my education as a 'horse husband' too :-)
