Inspired by the outer space thread, has anyone dropped something while working on a car that really matters?
I would volunteer dropping a contact breaker point retaining screw down the distributor shaft of a Marina.
Can't really remember, but I think I just fitted another screw and hoped for the best - naughty, naughty.
Dropped many a sump plug into the waste oil bucket during oil changes.

Not a "Component" as such, but youngest Daughter once dropped her Hammy Hampster in the car, and we never got that back! We "think" it may have legged it up the rear heater floor vents, but who knows! she tried leaving a dish of food and water in the rear footwell, but it was never touched, car never smelt of anything dead either, anyway we got her a bike to make up for it.

My radio speakers crackle on one side, i have taken a speaker off and tested it in another vehicle and its ok! Is the problem with my radio or with my car? Should i buy another radio? hope you can help! Read more
Swap the L&R speaker cables - if the fault moves it is the radio unit.
If it does not then it is either the speaker or the cable to the speaker.
Hoping someone can help. Having problems with a megane scenic (2005, 1.6) that is only a few hundred miles over the warranty limit (ouch).
When car is started all 4 cylinders are being used, but once running only using two.
Emissions warning came on and felt/sounded as if there could be a hole in exhaust. Loss of power also. Pencil coil has been replaced but issue not resolved. Further testing is being done today but suggested that probability that ECU will need to be replaced. Concerned about having ECU replaced if there is no certainty that this is the cause of the problem. Would be very grateful for any thoughts on this.

They changed 1 & 3, are you sure? I allways replace then as a triggered pair. Either 1 & 4, or 2 & 3.
It has come to my attention that the second deputy under chauffeur who is also occasionally allowed to vacuum the interior of some of my cars, has asked for a hand-held vacuum cleaner.
What would be the best tool for the job? Battery operated or the plug in cigarette lighter type?
As usual, my thanks in anticipation. Read more
You can get extension hoses from Numatic - I've a couple of these for cleaning indoors, and they'd make it much easier to vacuum the car, should it ever need it.
When I wrote messages on youtube under the new Citroen C5 videos and adverts etc, someone said I was wrong thinking it was a Belgian who designed the car. Apparently it is Domagoj Dukec a Croatian aho had previously worked at Audi. I just want to check, is this absolutely correct please? I just like to have my facts right. Read more
Yes I looked it up on Google. Domagoj Dukec (from Croatia) designed the new C5 Citroen Saloon and C5 Tourer. They showed a video of him. Officially he is Design Supervisor for Citroen. He worked for some years at Audi.
Recently bought a personalised no plate however I want to take the car it is on off road, the tax expires at the end of this month the MOT in July 09
I understand in order to transfer a no plate the car needs to be taxed and have MOT although the instructions say the DVLA will consider applications for transferring up to 12 months after the road tax expired
So my question is if I do not transfer the plate now and decide to sell the car what are the possibilities of transferring the plate to my other car once the tax expires at a later date
Anyone know, please help if you can Read more
Wouldn't it be easier to just put the plate on retention until you want to put it on another car? I think it's £25 for a year.
Hi I have a vw golf 1.6SE made 2003. When I have been driving and braking for 10 minutes or more I get a hissing sound coming from the inside of the car around the brake pedal. If I stop the car and pump the pedal a few times the hissing noise stops but comes back again when you start to drive and brake again.
The brakes are not spongy and feel fine, has anyone got any idea what is wrong. Read more
Thanks for advise I will take it in and have it looked at.
Is it a bad idea to keep photocopies of insurance or breakdown documents in the glovebox? If you need to exchange details it would make sense, but it wouldn't be too hot if the car got broken into - what's the best thing to do - documents in the glovebox or not?
Thanks

Had phone call this evening from the police officer i spoke to yesterday regarding the serial hooter. She has been to see them and it was the wife who was doing it.
The gripe it seems is not speciafically aimed at us but the entire street and the general parking situation with specific vans and cars further in the st named specifically for parking across the whole of the pavement.
The PC says she was warming up at our house (we're no1) and finishing when turning into her own street. She assures the PC that it will not happen again and realises 2 wrongs do not make a right.
The PC was very helpful and stated that she understands why people have to park the way they do on estates like these that don't even fit cars in garages but will look into trying to address some of the specific problem people.
She also warned her to slow down her speed as it had been noted she drives quite fast whilst hooting....this amused me Read more
OH MY WORD!!!!
neighbours jat the back of us on the problem road ust moved out today without telling any of us (find this odd they are retired but friendly) and think they may be renting out the house and a family have moved in. At this current time there is 1 car parked on drive and 3 on road.
Serial hooter usually drives past on a monday so might watch and observe reaction.
I'm sure that many cyclists and motorcyclists will have realised that there is a naturally occuring substance that has almost perfect lubricant properties, reducing friction to near zero:
fresh cow muck on an iron manhole cover!
