53,000miles. Noise developed from what I thought was the steering pump, mostly a moan. Not silly loud but it developed over about a fortnight. It's most pronouced when stopped-parked- and revved, though when driving it would be masked by other noises anyway.

I removed the serpentine belt and found that the steering pump had 30thou. - .75mm. - endplay on the shaft. I assumed that there was excessive wear in the pump and that would be the reason for the noise.

I acquired a reconditioned pump from my local factors and found that that pump shaft had 21thou. end float. I tried to find out from the pump suppliers, via the factors, if this was normal - but didn't get a definitive answer.

I fitted the recon. pump and there is still a noise, not really the same as before, but quite close.

Whilst the belt was off I felt/checked the water pump, alternator and and the pulleys and they felt fine. No aircon.

Does anyone know if there should be that sought of end float on the shaft - or any end float come to that? Or any other thoughts? Read more

One of my tryes is approaching 9 years old and it is now splitting so it needs to be replaced, my spare is also quite useless so I was thinking of buying two new tyres and then putting one of the good ones as a spare.

I really don't want to spend more than £40 each as its just a communitor car, but I live in Manchester which means a lot of rain so the most important thing for me which tyre offers the best grip for £40? Road noise is second, life isn't important as the car si already old and I do very little milleage.

>>I will get twpo new P3000s and put them at the back, the I will then have two 5mm Toyos at the front.

That sounds OK for now. In the interim, be saving up to replace the Toyos when they get down to 3mm or so. Your wet grip will be compromised more than any inter-brand choice if you allow them to go down to the legal limit.

25 years ago I was stopped doing an estimated 50 in a 30 mile an hour limit (I was showing off to my mate and it was appalling driving on my part). Police Officer saw how crestfallen I was, gave me an extended talking to then let me go with what we used to call 'A 5 day wonder'.

2 months ago I was stopped doing 42 in a 30. Another rollocking, then sent on my way.

SWMBO had an experience we've probably all had at some point.

On the way to work one morning this week she followed a driving school off a roundabout NSL A road, the school car was pretty slow and levelled out at 40mph or so, so swmbo in pick up overtakes, always rapidly by the way.
Once alongside she realises that the school car is pacing her, so she has to boot the vehicle considerably more to get by safely.
Yes she could have braked and tucked in behind, but anyone idiotic enough to accelerate hard when someone is overtaking could really do anything, so she didn't trust the car not to outbrake her instead.

The thing that surprised her most was that the school car only had one person in it, presumably an instructor?

Why do people do this. Read more

As the wagon is limited by law and device would suggest it is easier for
us (unlimited) car drivers to either keep out of the way or make the overtake
nice and easy.

I quite agree - as far as I am concerned they're both bad drivers - if it's going to take you 5 miles to overtake you shouldn't be doing it, and had I been the car driver I wouldn't have let it happen. I assume the car was on cruise and the driver just being bloody-minded.

Hey guys,

So I'm driving around like a happy chap in my cheap reliable primera, then when i put heavy pressure on the brakes to stop at around 10-15mph... the ABS kicks in when it does'nt need to, but not only that... it does'nt stop the car!

And it then happened a few more times, ABS kicking in for no reason but not doing anything to stop the car... had to use the handbreak to prevent knocking a shiny BMW

I dont have an ABS light on or anything, the garage says its most likely the ABS pump... which will cost upto £1300 to repair / replace.

Do you guys have any suggestions? I am a skint musician who paid £800 for the car itself, so I guess I may have to sell it :(

The pumps you can pick up for 80 quid on ebay reconditioned, so why are they so expensive to fit?

Why are people trying to fool the MOT tester? I'll admit I once put in stop smoke to hide the fact my car beleched out a load of blue smoke but I was planning to sell it very shortly afterwards and my dad was using the car at the time so it eas crucial it passed the MOT.

But when it comes to safety such as ABS etc I am usualy glad when it fails, as there were faults I had no idea about. These are usualy not my cars though (just cars I paid for). Now I have my own hopefully I can spot any dangerious faults when driivng and get them fixed ASAP. I have already replaced two slightly suspect tyres, a number plate and a couple of other things because they are safety related issues (apart from reg plate).

If people are so poor they have to resort to hiding things in an MOT maybe they cannot afford to run a car.

Sorry for the rant :).

Anywya to the OP I hope your car is fixed cheaply I never understand why and how garages can even dream of quoting £1300 to fix an 11/12 year old car.

In my younger days (when I was a cyclist) it was accepted practice for cyclists to glance over their shoulder before changing position on the road, e.g. passing a parked vehicle. Even if they're not taught to do it, I would have thought it would be obvious it was essential for self-preservation. Read more

Last time I glanced over my shouolder when cycling I needed a new pair of shorts due to how close the car behind was.
