My 607 2.2 hdi is displaying esp/asr defective followed by engine anti-pollution system defective. We have tried replacing the ECB, Filling the additive, Re-setting the level for the additive and still no joy. The fault will come on 3 to 4 days after having the ecu codes cleared and will then stay on for a random period of time before turning the engine management light off itself. The enginerecently blew up and was replaced at which time we changed clutch, flywheel and got a recharged FAP from peugeot. I'm pulling whats left of my hair out now as we seem to have tried everything and the garage bill is mounting. Read more
I have an Astra SRi CDTi 150, 2007, which Im very pleased with, but find it heavy on front tyres. The factory fitted Bridgstones lasted 20k, then fitted Avon's down to 15k, and I'm now on Pirelli P6000, currently done 5K and looking a bit worn. I'm mainly driving on fast country lanes. Rear's are still ok. tyre pressure 39 front 36 rear ? Any advise. Read more
Those tyre pressures the OP is quoting are the ECO pressure settings for the smaller sized tyres, and for up to 3 persons for the larger sized tyres. From the handbook:

Z 19 DTH engines
205/55 R 16 & 225/45 R 17 sized tyres:-

Tyre pressure ECO loaded with up to 3 people 39 front, 36 rear
Tyre pressure for full load 36 front, 42 rear
215/45 R 17 & 225/40 R 18 sized tyres:-
Tyre pressure for load of up to 3 persons 39 front, 36 rear
Tyre pressure for full load 41 front, 45 rear
Clearing away some very old papers, I found the receipt for the first car I ever bought. What it was, how much it cost and when I bought it don't really matter.
What does matter is that it cost just over 10% of my then annual income. I've tried to recall subsequent purchases and income and reckon that I've never spent more than 20% of my gross income on buying a car.
Is that a fairly average sort of figure? I suspect it's rather low but I've always tried to save up rather than borrow except for my first two cars where the loans came from the old man and were repaid in full.
Topical sort of question because with the credit crunch and most cars being funded on borrowed money, I wonder if people's ideas are changing?
I suppose I should say that I've driven workhorses rather than thoroughbreds and wonder if that makes a difference too?
What's the greatest % anyone has ever spent? Was it worth it?

What about 98.8%?
That's what Irv Gordon did.
"Irv Gordon, ... boasts the world's longest-running passenger car, a 42-year-old Volvo closing in on 2.7 million miles.
Gordon's car is touted by the Guinness Book of World Records as the vehicle with the "highest certified mileage driven by the original owner in non-commercial service."
And he's in West Michigan this week drawing attention to his 1966 Volvo P1800 and Volvos in general. Friday, he visited Betten Imports, 5901 28th St. SE, and today, he is to be the guest of the Great Lakes Volvo Club at the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners, northeast of Kalamazoo.
According to Gordon, 68, a retired science teacher from New York, he started as a fan of General Motors products. But after buying what he characterized as two "lemons" during the early 1960s, he searched for other options.
A friend suggested he try a Volvo, a make of car "I didn't even know about."
"I took a ride and fell in love with the car," he says, and on June 30, 1966, plunked down $4,150 for a showroom-new P1800, nearly the equivalent of his $4,200 teaching salary that year. "
I've just had my Focus in for an Mot, and been told it needs £1200-worth of work,
Biggest cost is new front suspension arms and bushes on rear trailing arms.
Does this sound likely? Are Focuses prone to suspension problems? If so, how much should I expect to pay to fix this? I've never noticed any issues with the ride or odd noises.
Another failure point was a broken front foglight. As this has been cracked for two years it seem odd that this should be raised on this test.
It was a main dealer who did the Mot, and I suspect that, with the collapse of car sales, they are perhaps trying to make extra work for themselves. Read more
I need the bushes on my rear trailing arm replacing, pus a lower suspension arm replacing. I was quoted £ 400 by my local Ford dealer, this includes four wheel tracking as well.my car is a 2008 focus hatch.local garages cannot do it,as they do not have the correct tools to do the job.i will be taking it to my local Ford dealer.
Many people may know this, but I didn't until I contacted the Lancashire Constabulary. With reference to the M6 Forton services near Lancaster: police confirm that you are permitted to join and leave the motorway both N and S bound, to and from the C-roads which allow access to these services for staff etc. Presumably, this applies to all other motorway services as well. I thought that using these exits was illegal, a notion supported by all the road markings and signs forbidding the use of these exits to 'Unauthorized Vehicles', at this service area at least.
I am now asking the police if the same applies to the entrance/ exit at Claughton/ Catterall, which would be very convenient for those in the Garstang area, to avoid the jams on the A6 at Broughton near Preston. Read more
A dear friend, sadly these 20 odd years no longer with us, was driving home to the Oxford area from somewhere which allowed him to use a section of the then under construction M25. He was, I'm afraid, prone to driving after enjoying a party to the full. He took the exit for what he was sure was an appropriate slip road at some speed in his Capri. Unfortunately the road was not finished and the car embedded itself in a trench full of mud and gravel. He was unhurt but the car was quite poorly. His initial reaction was to get out and walk until he could find an alternative means of getting home. After a while he decided that it was too cold and dark and that it would be much more comfortable to return to the stranded Capri and spend what remained of the night in it.
As dawn broke, he was woken to a knock on his window by a passing police patrol. Having explained himself he was invited to blow in the bag which produced a predictable result.
Fortunately for him though, he had managed to lose his keys somewhere on his original foray into the night and was therefore not technically in charge of the vehicle. I think the officer also took a view that even if he had wanted to drive and had found his keys that only a crane and a bodyshop was going to make that possible.

I notice when buying brake pads that often shims are no longer supplied. Is this because they are not deemed necessary anymore? I always fit the old ones. Is this correct? had to put Citroen because computer asked for a make but this is a general question. {edited - DD} Read more
Shims have always been "anti squeal" shims.
It was quite acceptable to use pads without shims if noise was not an issue; excess heat that they dissipated (or not) was never an issue. (Advice from Lockheed and Girling, many years ago)!
If the heat was an issue, they would still be used. Most pads from point of sale are only fitted with the "squashy" type backing on.
Argue about the the heat and performance all day long but its not actually relevant ?
Hello,
I've a Mondeo 2.0 TDI on a '53 plate and one of the Instrument panel lights has stopped working (on the speedo clock). Does anyone know how to remove the instrument cluster to enable the bulb to be changed? Is it possible for an amateur to do the job or does it mean a garage?
Any help or advice gratefully received. Read more

Morning Gents,
Pulling my hair out with this one, any help much appreciated!!
Scudo van same as Peugeot Expert, 2.0 HDI, The problem is, heavy diesel knock, erratic reving, engine management light on, seems to improve when the engine is worm but still very hesitant and not really driveable, its over fueling as black smoke and strong diesel smell.
Put the scanner on it and it comes up with code 190 Diesel Pressure Sensor, If i pull wires of the Rail pressure sensor it goes to limp mode and runs lovely, no diesel knok, no hesitateing level idle. Changed the Pressure sensor, cleared codes and it runs perfect for 20-30mins it will then kind of hikup, then management light comes on and it goes to limp mode and again runs lovely but in limp mode??? Put the scanner on it and its code 190 pressure sensor again??? If i clear the codes and then leave the engine a couple of hours, the management light comes on as soon as i start it and goes directly to limp mode, is the fault some how temp related??
I have changed the diesel filter as i know these can cause strange behaviour with the HDI, I am now just scratching my head?? Any Ideas???
Thanks

I have not driven the car for a few weeks now and when I tried to start it the battery was flat. I locked the car and the locks sounded 'slow' when locking. Once I'd got hold of some jump leads I tried to go and jump start it, but the car won't open with the fob or the key, I'm assuming this is because of the flat battery.
How do i go about getting into the car to open the bonnet, or just get under the bonnet and charge the battery?? Read more
thanks all for your input, however the discussions on fuse ratings and wiring have gone totally over my head!! i checked in the boot and the battery is not there, so thought i'd give the key another chance. held the key to the left for so many seconds and then swiftly turned it back the other way as someone had suggested
this did the trick and i am in, got the bonnet open and jumped it so all sorted now
Had the same anti pollution light come up on my Peugeot 607 2.2 diesel. Dealers quoted £60 just to diagnose the fault, never mind repair it!
Got home, stripped off the covers to all the electrics and the fuse box, squirted with WD40 and then put in fuel additive to clean up the sensors....
