Have added a 2nd urban 4x4 ( Nissan X trail , 04 plate ) to the current car, 3 door Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin , to accommodate a forthcoming baby .

I don't want to sell the Shogun Pinin ( W reg ) as it won't fetch much despite being in very clean nick with a recent cambelt change and my mum who lives mostly abroad although with British licence uses it when in the country as a named driver . I also own three ' classic ' cars on limited mileage policies , but one is up for sale to make way for the Nissan ( 1995 Mini Cooper )

The Shogun is insured with a main online company for a reasonable premium ( sub £400 fully comp for NW London on street ) , but trying to insure the 2nd modern car I get silly quotes, circa £800 , as they say your NCD ( I have 7 yrs ) only carries to one vehicle - I say I can only drive one at a time. I haven't yet bought a separate policy for the Nissan yet though I'm covered 3rd party when driving . Have had my clean licence for over 20 years - will be 40 in 2 weeks .

Anybody out there got a clue how to best insure this ' fleet ' . The classics apart from the Mini cost me £250 a year fully comp. Have not had a claim for over 15 years ??

Is there a policy to get the Shogun covered as a kind of Classic ? it only needs to be TPFT or even 3rd party only .. Read more

First of all, if there is no policy on the Nissan you might find yourself spotted driving a vehicle without insurance. Lots of police cars have cameras now. You might be insured 3rd party but if the vehicle has no policy then I thought leaving it on the street is illegal, let alone driving it.

As for a solution. How often will you drive the Pinin youself? You seem to be keeping it for your mother when she's back in the UK. How about the Pinin is put in her name (if she's going to be the main driver) and insure the Nissan with your no claims discount. Putting the Pinin on a limited mileage policy in your mum's name and you as named driver might be fairly cheap?

We hear much about badge snobbery which implies that the owner of such a vehicle is witles and only buys to show some sort of imagined superiority over fellow motorists. It is just as bad ...if not worse when inverted snobbery shows itself when someone implies their superiority by buying a less 'snobby' badged car. Folks can buy whatever suits them as far as I 'm concerned nd we all have individual car criteria. I have owned cars ranging from £300 Simcas to Mercedes and neither felt jealous or superior in either. (I await the Merc slamming brigade's comments) What does the room think? Read more

I think my snobbery is common, i.e. I prefer to buy cars which are relatively rare.

Thus original Mini [in 1994],
Espace
Saab 9-3
Legacy Outback
New Citroen C5 [still only seen one on the road]

I have nothing against Mondeo's [actually the best hire car I've had but did love the S-Type too], Vectras etc., just prefer less common.

O.K this is not a rant about unlicenced cars or a post about an unlicenced car in the street I pass regulaly.
Rather it is seeking advice on my own unlicenced car. My tax disk expired at the end feburary. The car was reported (on the 05/03/08 at 14.00) to the DVLA as being unlicenced where I usally parked it on a public road after my tax disk expired. I got a letter with the date of 04/09/08 from the DVLA informing me of this, plus a request to pay them £45 in the same letter.
I subseqently wrote my car off on the 21/03/08.

My thoughts on the matter is that:
1. Yes I was wrong not to get my car taxed
2. Why does it take 6 months for the DVLA to bring this matter to my attention and issue a fine?
I could imagine a situation where someone did not tax their car for months and only when the letters start to come through did they find they owed thousands in fines.
3. I suspect the police or a member of the public reported the car on the road. Why do we have this system of 'reporting'? The DVLA has all the information it needs on it's computer systems already. If the car was not being used on the road it should have been SORNed. In the absence of the car being SORNed the DVLA could assume it was being used on the road. In this case the 'Reporting' system seems a little defunct. Couldn't the DVLA issue fines of lets say £10 a day on owners where don't SORN or tax their car, rather than relying on this 'reporting'?
4. How many times can a car be reported as untaxed but on a public road in a defined period, and how is that period defined? If a member of the public/police did report the car on the 05/03/08 at 14.00, what is to stop them reporting the car in the same position the hour or day after? In short what could my maximum liablity be?
5. NIPs for speeding have to be posted/recived (I am not to sure which one) less that 14 days after the offence. Is there any provision like this concerning untaxed cars?

I'm sure members of the public who take the time to report a car dont
do it grudgingly they must have some personal interest for wanting to report it?

Like why should they pay tax and someone else not, perhaps?

Observations:

1) When I hire a car in France, using Europcar, and choosing the cheapest category, I always seem to get a Renault Clio. (When I use Budget, it is a lot more unpredictable.)

2) I recently hired a car at a UK airport - Europcar, cheapest category - and got a Peugeot 308 (an upgrade!). There seemed to be rather a lot of Peugeots at Europcar at that airport.

3) It often seems to me that in this country, each year one or two models will be particularly popular with rental firms, probably because the special deals from the manufacturers.

Questions:

1) Am I right in suspecting that there are rather a lot of rental Peugeots in the UK this year?

2) I'm going to be hiring a car at a German airport next month. If I choose the cheapest available car from a major rental firm like Europcar or Budget, what am I likely to get?

I've driven a Panda so I'd have taken the Peugeot. I'd have expected that to be a bit roomier in width judging from the outside.

After being shown to be the worsed place in the UK (Bradford BD4)for uninsured drivers in Febuary the police said they would have a crackdown the result is that the number of uninsured drivers has increased.I travel through this area almost everyday when I am in the UK its an area where there is no police presence of any description to enforce any motoring offences you don't have to wear seatbelts you can use a mobile phone no need to tax or insure the car or have an mot all this goes on in broad daylight not to mention unlicenced quad and motorbikesit makes me wonder whether its worth the bother of trying to stay legal.

Except last December an idiot crashed into me

I have fully comp, plus legal protection, plus protected no claims

How much do you think the premium has gone up?

"Unfortunately, we will not be able to cover you for the coming year."

What the pink fluffy dice?

From a major insurance company?

What exactly was the point of protected no claims if they are refusing to renew cover if you have one accident?

Really wish I could name and shame

If you have read my post at www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?f=2&t=65...8 you will have seen the issues I have been having. What else within the car control system can effect the gearbox? Would the fact it needs a new ABS sensor on the nearside front wheel have anything to do with it, or does it need a new air flow sensor? I have access to VagCom so I can check anything that might effect it but don't know what readings I should be looking for.

All help appreciated.

Hello and thank you for reading.
Ok here's the deal...

Model & Year: 1996 Volkswagen Jetta GLX VR6

THE PROBLEM:

I was rolling the window up two days ago when I heard a snapping noise and the window stopped going up (luckily it was almost all the way there).

I'd pay to have it fixed if I could afford it, but I'd like to try and get the door panel removed and fix it myself.

I've unscrewed all 6 (side and bottom) screws along the sides of the inner door panel. I can pull it out about an inch on most places where it looks like the plastic clips are either broken or detached. How do I proceed in taking the door panel off completely?

Key words for this type of problem (to help other newbies find this post in the future): driver door panel removal window fix fell off track how to

I'm assuming it is the same for your Jetta as my Mk3 Golf.

You need to remove the screws which hold the inner door handle on. Get a screwdriver and prise off the plastic cover to the door handle. Underneath the cover there are 3 or 4 screws which you need to remove.

If you have electric windows - you need to make sure that you remove the window switch carefully as you dont want to rip it off when taking the door card off.

Other - unscrew plastic door lock pin.

You can leave the speaker in the door if you are carfull when removing the door card, but I just take the speaker out first (noting which wire goes where)
