Hi,

We have had our Clio since nearly new, had the cambelt done by the Renault dealer (Renault Minute dept) 5 years ago (cost £200 inc oil + filter), the dealer has quoted £360 this time and a (reasonably) trusted indy has quoted approx £210 though I am thinking of doing it myself this time around.

£82 parts from Renault, £50 elsewhere, and it is a straight forward job ....

.... however Haynes emphasise the need to use Renault tool Mot.1273 (SEEM C.Tronic 105.6) to check the belt tension. They say "being able to turn the belt through 90deg with thumb and forefinger" as an initial guide before using the tool or taking the car (at low revs) to a dealer for the tension to be checked.

How neccesary is this, I dont recall the Renault minute guy using a tool to check the tension (it was done while I waited) and how many indys would check the tension in this way?

Thanks and regards. Read more

Job done, fairly straight forward, cambelt tension common sense really.

£67.15 in parts, Conitech cambelt and tensioner kit plus two new aux belts.

Saved a couple of hundred quid !

I am soon to upgrade to a Vista PC and my ISP is AOL. Therefore I will be using their AOL 9.0VR program.

Can anyone clear up one or two confusing points.

They say a cable modem will not work with Vista, I currently use a BT Voyager 105 USB modem, is this a cable modem?

They then go onto say that Vista will not work with the BT 105 and I should upgrade to an ethernet based modem or a modem router.

Will I be able to use a more updated USB version of the 105 (any suggestions)? What is an ethernet based modem or for that matter what is a modem router (wifi)?

Many thanks

I have 195/60/R15 tyres on my estate and need to fit winter tyres this winter. Will I have any problems if I fit 195/65/R15 size tyres? Read more

Ikethetyke

Many thanks Dave. I take it there's no problems with the actual physical size of the tyres.

If you have watched Dragons' Den yesterday evening, you must have seen the last guy who came with the invention of a device which can be fitted retrospectively in any diesel cars and will make filling up diesel car with petrol an impossibility.

Interesting to know that BMW, Ford & Land Rover have already built in similar feature in their new vehicles.

Hopefully, we'll see this on the high street within next few months. Read more

I have a device to prevent misfuelling on my BMW, and it cost nothing...it's called a brain.

The question is really about MOT. I just bought an immaculate diesel 607 and asked my local MOT place to recheck it even though it has one already. They said that the ABS is not working even though it the dash light does just what it says in the book. It has to stay on for so many seconds and then go off.

Thing is they are right it does not work because you can skid the car on a wet road.

The MOT man reckons that someone has fiddled with the car computer to make it look like the ABS is OK.

The local Peugeot garage say that is not possible.

So two questions. Who is right and should it pass the MOT? Read more

Gabby

Talking about skids, someone at work suggested that if the ABS was not working properly the car would have other lamps on, because the ESR system would also be showing a fault.

There is no fault on the ESR and the ESR can be turned on and off OK.

Has anyone experience of replacing the outer CV joint boots. I have a 1.9 TDi 130 05 estate but I imagine ther're all similar. Do you have to take the drive shaft off as the Haynes manual implies or can it be done in situ? Could I for example leave both inner and oute joints attatched, release the hub carrier and pull the outer joint off the splines?Any help here would be much appreciated.

You can get split boots that then use superglue to close the split. This saves the effort of disconnecting drive shaft. Although these will not last as long as the proper ones.

I did this to an old Vauxhall Cavalier when I couldn't split the ball joint. Lasted a few years though.

Hi folks,

Some advice here would really be appreciated.

I am in month 3 of my 3 month warranty and recently whilst driving up a hill i have lost all power and had to drop down to second gear. In one instance I have had to pull into a layby through fear of actually rolling back down the hill.

The orange warning light (electrical fault) appears intermitantly and the garage have advised that they have changed the EGR valve when I last went back complaining of the orange light. It is due back in on Wednesday (06/08).

Having seen previous posts about Espaces i am now concerned that about what the problem could be and i'd like to go back to the garage armed with some knowledge.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi can you help me

I have a 1.2 corsa the other day I was at work when it just would not start, it tried over lovely but would not fair up. it almost did a couple of time but it dyed almost instantly.
I had driven it to work and parked it up with no problems, but I had a slight smell of petrol in the cabin.
a couple of days early I had done a long journey down to Devon, and on the way back I had filled the tank to the top there was a slight blip in the power, but it ran home ok, but as I said a few days later it had a slight smell of petrol and would not start.

the RAC said it looks like the fuel pump was not working and towed me home.

Is it that, do you think?

Also, the engine management light flashes when I try and start the car. The RAC said that that is probably when the car tries to turn over it all getting confused, and that something is wrong (I don't need a flashing light to tell me that)!!

Thanks Read more

I would suggest you now get a 2nd key. Someone such as the following *should* be able to help you cheaper than Vauxhall can.

A google search may well find other locksmiths as well.
