I have 195/60/R15 tyres on my estate and need to fit winter tyres this winter. Will I have any problems if I fit 195/65/R15 size tyres? Read more

Ikethetyke

Many thanks Dave. I take it there's no problems with the actual physical size of the tyres.

If you have watched Dragons' Den yesterday evening, you must have seen the last guy who came with the invention of a device which can be fitted retrospectively in any diesel cars and will make filling up diesel car with petrol an impossibility.

Interesting to know that BMW, Ford & Land Rover have already built in similar feature in their new vehicles.

Hopefully, we'll see this on the high street within next few months. Read more

I have a device to prevent misfuelling on my BMW, and it cost nothing...it's called a brain.

The question is really about MOT. I just bought an immaculate diesel 607 and asked my local MOT place to recheck it even though it has one already. They said that the ABS is not working even though it the dash light does just what it says in the book. It has to stay on for so many seconds and then go off.

Thing is they are right it does not work because you can skid the car on a wet road.

The MOT man reckons that someone has fiddled with the car computer to make it look like the ABS is OK.

The local Peugeot garage say that is not possible.

So two questions. Who is right and should it pass the MOT? Read more

Talking about skids, someone at work suggested that if the ABS was not working properly the car would have other lamps on, because the ESR system would also be showing a fault.

There is no fault on the ESR and the ESR can be turned on and off OK.

Has anyone experience of replacing the outer CV joint boots. I have a 1.9 TDi 130 05 estate but I imagine ther're all similar. Do you have to take the drive shaft off as the Haynes manual implies or can it be done in situ? Could I for example leave both inner and oute joints attatched, release the hub carrier and pull the outer joint off the splines?Any help here would be much appreciated.

You can get split boots that then use superglue to close the split. This saves the effort of disconnecting drive shaft. Although these will not last as long as the proper ones.

I did this to an old Vauxhall Cavalier when I couldn't split the ball joint. Lasted a few years though.

Hi folks,

Some advice here would really be appreciated.

I am in month 3 of my 3 month warranty and recently whilst driving up a hill i have lost all power and had to drop down to second gear. In one instance I have had to pull into a layby through fear of actually rolling back down the hill.

The orange warning light (electrical fault) appears intermitantly and the garage have advised that they have changed the EGR valve when I last went back complaining of the orange light. It is due back in on Wednesday (06/08).

Having seen previous posts about Espaces i am now concerned that about what the problem could be and i'd like to go back to the garage armed with some knowledge.

Many thanks in advance.

First signs of the egr valve clogging up replace it they are not expensive unlike the bill if you don't.Nothing to do with supermarket fuel its a common fault regardless of the type of fuel or where its bought.

Hi can you help me

I have a 1.2 corsa the other day I was at work when it just would not start, it tried over lovely but would not fair up. it almost did a couple of time but it dyed almost instantly.
I had driven it to work and parked it up with no problems, but I had a slight smell of petrol in the cabin.
a couple of days early I had done a long journey down to Devon, and on the way back I had filled the tank to the top there was a slight blip in the power, but it ran home ok, but as I said a few days later it had a slight smell of petrol and would not start.

the RAC said it looks like the fuel pump was not working and towed me home.

Is it that, do you think?

Also, the engine management light flashes when I try and start the car. The RAC said that that is probably when the car tries to turn over it all getting confused, and that something is wrong (I don't need a flashing light to tell me that)!!

Thanks Read more

I would suggest you now get a 2nd key. Someone such as the following *should* be able to help you cheaper than Vauxhall can.

A google search may well find other locksmiths as well.

My friend has an '07 Passat 2.0 Tdi and her original Dunlop SP Sports on the front now need replacing, having covered 42k miles. It would take me several years to rack up this kind of mileage, and in my opinion they have lasted exceptionally well.
Should she replace with the same again?...her main criteria is grip (especially given our inclement weather) and she spends most days trawling up and down our motorway system.
Cost is not so important...the lease company will be paying and she has to use ATS.

legacylad - yes, I was a bit surprised. The car was in for a service and the service manager phoned to say that the front tyres were worn and needed replacing. I said thanks but I'll get new ones at my usual tyre place, and he replied that he could not let the vehicle out of the workshop because the tyres were illegal, with the cord (?) showing!

Ok, I'm not he world's most conscientious checker of tyres but every time I walk past the car or get in it I subconsciously give the tyres a once over, and if the front tyres were that bad I'm sure I would have noticed. I suppose I should have asked to see the old tyres when I picked the car up.

The Passat is a big car and the 2 litre diesel engine and transmission sitting over the front wheels (and the torque) must create fairly rapid wear. But, like I say, I don't drive like a maniac and do a lot of dual carriageway and motorway driving. I thought I'd get at least 20k miles from the fronts.

My 2000X Audi A4 1.9TDi has consistently covered 22k on fronts and about double on rears.
But then it's a smaller, lighter and less torquey car.

Would'nt start, left overnight and started first time. Drove around estate for 15 minutes and cut out when turning a right hand bend. Power steering gone, the lot!
Took off fuel lines to fuel filter and it started again, managed to get home (2 miles)
Let it idle for 5 minutes and it cut out again. Left overnight, came back next morning and it started 1st time. Died after 10 minutes before even getting up to temperature.
Decided to change fuel filter thinking this was the cause.
Got it going again, drove around the estate a few times but stalled again. Would'nt start so left overnight. Next morning would'nt start, battery getting low, called out AA who checked fuel to rail, ok good pressure and a slight pulse to glo plug electronic leads.
Tried different key still did'nt start, put on diagnostic machine faults found P0191 fuel rail pressure, P0204 injector CR, P0340 cam sensor (twice) and P8888 control pressure injector and finally P1000 manufacturers specified fault.
I think it may be the cam sensor because there is fuel in the rail but it's not going down through the injectors, but what's this P1000 fault?
