Has anyone experience of replacing the outer CV joint boots. I have a 1.9 TDi 130 05 estate but I imagine ther're all similar. Do you have to take the drive shaft off as the Haynes manual implies or can it be done in situ? Could I for example leave both inner and oute joints attatched, release the hub carrier and pull the outer joint off the splines?Any help here would be much appreciated.

Has anyone experience of replacing the outer CV boots on these cars. Is it necessary to remove the driveshaft assembly from the car or can it be done in situ and what is the best way? Is it possible to leave both joints attached and pull the outer joint off the shaft by releasing the upper end of the hub carrier? Any help here would be very much appreciated.

I have replaced these on my 2001 130 Tdi Passat.
I think Haynes manual suggests disconnecting the upper steering balljoints.
The bolt that has to be undone to release these is usually seized.
I released both lower ball joints so that the hub carrier & outer joint could be separated.
I don't know if the rather horrendous front suspension design they used on the 2001 model was still being used on the 2005 model.

The Polo has a conventional MacPherson front suspension arrangement rather than the deranged 4 ball-joint set up on the old Passat.
I cannot see any difficulties with the Polo - it's absolutely conventional and will yield to the usual method of disconnecting the bottom ball joint.

You can get split boots that then use superglue to close the split. This saves the effort of disconnecting drive shaft. Although these will not last as long as the proper ones.
I did this to an old Vauxhall Cavalier when I couldn't split the ball joint. Lasted a few years though.
