hi, my older sister with soon to be 4 kids is looking at replacing her '04 renault megane with something suitable. she's found a 3.0 v6 auto grand espace on a y reg with 88k for 3.5k. she's looking at keeping it for 5 years at an average of 12k a year so i assume it should reach 150k in one piece. work will be picking up the fuel bill fortunately for her but just wanted an opinion on what you guys think of these?

what other options are there for 2 aults, 4 kids and 2 pushchairs around a similer budget, she had mentioned chrysler voyagers any opinions there?

I have one of these on a 2000 plate, in 2 years i have spent £7,500 in maintenance, this included: Servicing (plugs, oil, and all filters, new water pump, cam belt, aux belt)
Dash display and locking recode, there is a prob with these.
New gear box and drive shaft.
Horn and headlight and indicator (indicator just fell out somewhere!)
Just had mot and needed new cat which was £500.
New Radio as water damage is common due to location.
Spent so much that I will never be able sell it.

When I brough from a dealer i had no idea that it was a weeks work and £2000 to change plugs and belt so CHECK WHEN IT WAS LAST DONE! I was caught out.

I also own a 1998 2.2td espace done over 150000 miles myself in it and very reliable,
Only probs where leaky heater matrix which cost £1000 to replace as whole dash has to come out, and sometimes it can fail on emissions on mot (I shut the egr valve off now and use cataclean a week before and goes through easy now)

Hi,

I recently had a ticking noise from the engine which on further inspection was shown to be the fuel injector seals. I had 2 of the 4 replaced (the other 2 were apparently ok and tightened down to save me money). This cost me £122 which I thought was quite reasonable due to the time it took to remove the old seals.

Since I have had it repaired, there still seems to be a ticking noise on start up, although some mornings I don't notice it. Also, since this repair, whenever I hit around 2800rpm to 3000rpm I have a whistling coming from the engine. I'm no expert on cars, but my guess is its the turbo. I don't seem to have any loss in power, but my concern is that prior to the fuel injector seal repair, I had never heard or experienced this before.
Is this something I should be concerned about? Are they related? If it is an issue, does anyone have any experience in this area and can give me a rough estimate to have it repaired.

Thanks for your help! Read more

does the 1.6 TDCI ford fiesta engine have the same injector seal problem as the 1.4 TDCi does, and is there a way I can get this problem fixed as a long term solution permanantly or will is always be a recurring night mare ever so often,

Could anyone help me out with this ,my daughters 2004 ,307 90 hdi ,
last week it cut out on her ,after checking the diesel ,we decided to change fuel filter ,
and drain the tank incase she had got dodgy diesel ,cleared fuel lines ,then refilled tank ,car wouldnt start on key but started on a push ,it ran for two minutes then cut of again ,same thing happened yesterday ,restarted the car on a push ,but car drove for two minutes then cut out again ,started again on the key for a further three times ,before i got it home ,after talking to a few mechanics yesterday as the anti pollution light is not staying on ,they have said about the particle filter or the cat being blocked ,as its losing the power to rev up ,before i book it into puegeot would it be visible to try and clear exhaust with an airline .Thanks . Before the FAP blocked totally she should have been getting wall-to-wall warnings, the MIL light should have been on and it should have been in limp-home for weeks - was it?

Irish diesel should have no effect on the FAP at all - although I doubt that PSA have done any definitive tests...

If it's blocked; replace it and service/re-set the additive system - or the new one will quickly go the same way.

My wife has decided that she wants to change her large 7 seater for something much smaller. Having looked at lots of models, the choice was boiled down to the following brand new cars - Toyota Aygo, Toyota Yaris or Mazda 2.

There were problems with the Toyotas; the Aygo has only four seatbelts (if it had five there would be one on our drive already) and the Yaris has a digital speedo which she hates and also no rear electric windows. She wants electric rear windows because she can turn them off so the children don't play with them. Manual windows will cause havoc with one of our children. The Mazda seemed to be very good, but she has decided that she doesn't want one, even though the top of the range ticks all the boxes.

I had a brainwave... Mercedes A-Class. Brand new the Elegance SE is about £16,000 as opposed to £12,000 for the Mazda, but I can find examples which are about 6 months ld with 5,000 miles on for under £11,000. The car is also slightly shorter but much more roomy than the Mazda and has a lot of hidden safety kit and other features that the Mazda doesn't have.

So, is it a sensible idea? Surely it will have lost most of its depreciation, whereas a Mazda will lose a fair bit in its first year. What do you think? Read more

Hi all,

Noticed a mysterious pool of liquid under my wife's 2001/Y 1.8 Tddi Endura Focus Ghia. It's not oily, have checked the levels and they all seem fine, coolant doesn't seem to be depleting. No warning lights on the dash either. My only guess would be air-con condensation being emitted, but how long is this likely to last? I noticed it on Saturday and it's still slowly dripping. It seems to be dripping from underneath the car engine bay slightly off-centre more towards the passenger side. It seems to be clear liquid, doesn't have a smell to it, so I don't think it's windscreen fluid.

The car seems to be driving OK, doesn't seem to be running poorly.

Does anyone have any ideas? Having never owned an air-con fitted car myself, It's a bit of a mystery - the wife only uses the air-con sporadically, but I follow the Ford manual which instucts running the air con for at least 30mins per month.

Any suggestions really appreciated!

Many thanks

There is nothing really to service at home on the aircon system as such, there is usually a pollen filter to change somewhere, well worth doing because they do clog up and stifle the airflow through the heating/cooling system. Some people also use an anti-bacterial spray on the evaporator/ducting to kill any stale smells.

hiya im having trouble replacing my front brake pads, im trying to take off the two 19mm bolts at the back of the calliper and they arnt moving one bit even after hamming it. am i doing this right ive been foing it clockwise becasue the bolts facing the other way. thanks Read more

Sounds like you are trying to remove the carrier from the hub; not the caliper fist from the carrier!

There should be 2 bolts you need to undo at the top and bottom of the carrier (near the top edge of the inner pad).

With best respects; if you are not sure what you are doing with brakes then should you be doing it?

Every once in while there's a post about how to get 3 child seats in a car/mpv. With No3 on the way we now have little choice but to get some sort of MPV type car.

Things to consider:

1 - the 3 children will all be in baby or child seats (not boosters which tend to be narrower)

2 - After the tragic car crash in which the kids in the back of the MPV were killed we would like to get 3 kids in the middle row.

So we are looking for anything with a 2-3-2 seating arrangement. So far we have considered:

S-Max - looks promising but concerned over reports of poor build quality and reliability

Sedona - nice and cheap to buy, big and spacious but heavy on fuel and VED

Voyager - same as sedona but not as cheap to buy

Mulitpla - too ugly...

Anyone got any other suggestions? Ideally a mid sized MPV rather than full size, hence the S-Max looking promising. Read more

Honda FRV is nice, but expensive and there will be fights over who gets the third front seat and you'll have buttons pushed on every journey

I've had a Touran for 4 years since new and it's an excellent car for 3 kids. I just bought a C8, which is a tad larger, but I needed the flexibility, so the Touran has been relegated for short journeys now, but it is still used and loved for it's excellent pull and economy.

I looked at the Grand Picasso, and it is a lovely car. I'm very impressed with the Citroen and I would certainly say if I had the choice again of a mid-MPV, the 2 going head to head would be the Picasso and the Touran.

I've been having a search around to see what combination of circumstances triggers / engages the transient overboost on the TDCi motors.

Ford make a big play of this feature in all its tech specs, but so far I've only found fairly vague descriptions such as " it happens when full acceleration is required" or "under hard acceleration". Nothing technical, or more detailed about when it happens, and the circumstances.

I'd be very interested to know:

--> is it only triggered when the pedal is floored (similar to kickdown in an automatic)?

--> or is the ECU clever enough to give overboost if the pedal is 'stabbed' quickly, over a certain defined range of pedal travel?

--> is it only available in certain conditions (i.e. coolant / oil temp above a certain range, exhaust gas temp in a certain range etc)

I would have thought the driver has to actively initiate it with a determined right foot -- especially after the "unintended acceleration" lawsuit that hit Audi in the US in the 80s.
