I'm looking at buying a car at auction.

These days what's the risk?

The way i see it, if i buy a car from a small dealer, the only diff. is I pay more and he gives me say a 3 month warranty. (Which i could buy easily myself)

So if i cut out the middle man, and buy a car under 3 years old, I have the safety of the manufacturers warranty, and if the car is older I can take out a aftermarket warranty, ( I know some companies are better than others) and save a packet.

Are there other risks that i'm not seeing???

If you want a decent price for your car, 12 photos will not accurately describe the car nor will you get a good price. you will have to get a free photo hosting site to host the photos, and link them up with your eBay ad.

I sold my car via eBay - I had at least 20 high resolution photos, and described the car in detail including the service history. My car fetched just short of £5k - the buyer didn't come to see the car, nor did he even email me about the car. Contacted me within 24 hours of the auction ending, came the following day, paid the money and took the car away.

A friend recently took her Citroen HDi in for a service at a non franchised garage. During the service they noticed a frayed wire to an injector and the cambelt was due for replacement. She dutifully booked it back in a couple of days later to be fixed.

During this repair, her car caught fire ?during the test drive? and the garage told her she needed to claim on her insurance. A subsequent phone call said it was a write off. She told them as they were driving that it was their problem and to claim on their insurance.
After several weeks, she heard nothing, and had no joy at the garage, so she wrote to head office, asking them to pay up or else she would see them in court. There reply confirmed that there had been a fire, but said it did not happen during the test drive, but while idling on the ramp after the repair. Also, their assessor said the fire was due to a short on the heater solenoid, and as it could not be forseen in combination with the fact they were not driving means it?s her problem.

A couple of questions:
Whose insurance does she claim on?
What does she need to do next?
Thanks
Joe

Dr Rubber: "Interesting point, where does the garages "resonable care" end? I understand if its an "unknown fault" its a bit rough on the garage, "

To be honest the behaviour of this garage sounds decidedly dodgy and not above board. I would have thought that a reputable garage would get an independent assessment of the car to support their claims, either an insurance assessor, or someone from a respected body such as the AA. The fact that they did not surely acts against them.

I hope your friend gets a just solution.

Hello folks! I would appreciate any opinion regarding the idling speed on my 2002 TDCi 130bhp hatchback, 101,000 miles. Idling speed of 750rpm seems just fine, but as soon as the car is moving the speed goes up to 950rpm, in neutral or with the clutch down. This makes for uncomfortable motoring in slow-moving traffic and necessitates slipping the clutch at any speed below 10mph. The car has just been serviced and I am assured that "they all do that" but I am not convinced. Does anyone else have this problem? Many thanks.

Thank you Kith. That just about confirms that there is no problem with the idling speed. I guess its just something I'll have to get used to. Thank you for yur advice.

In a nutshell my 2002 Volvo S80 climate control is making a noise like a constant release of air, almost as if punctured. If I turn the system off the noise stops immediately. As soon as I turn it on it starts making the noise immediately. I've fiddled about with the controls and have noticed that it is now not blowing anywhere near as cold as I would expect it to be when put on maximum blow on the coldest setting.

Anybody any ideas what is amiss here?

Thanks.

Hi All,

My mate parked in Nottingham over the weekend, it was on-street, he got back to the car and had been ticketed by a private company, which wants £80 (doubling to £160 if not paid in a week). He's taken photos of the car, there were no signs he could see, but after getting the ticket, there was a sign across the street on a building that was set back from the road warning about the parking. Is there any recourse with these companies or is it a case of being stitched and swallowing the £80 fine? Read more

There must be a set of dotty DoT (or is it DfT or something even more contrived?) regs that specify a forest of traffic signals at junctions and pedestrian crossings. In Aylesbury, a new set of pedestrian lights (part of a road revamp that has caused congestion where none existed before) has SIX light boxes in each direction, three at different heights (one so high it's only useful to top-deck bus passengers) on each side of the carriageway.

Are fewer lights demonstrably ineffective? Is there a real cost-benefit? Or are people in Whitehall just covering their backsides so that if there's an accident at one of these locations they can say 'Well there was abolutely no question that the lights weren't visible'?

Of course, these multiple in-yer-face lights are of the latest, brightest LED kind - the sort, actually, that when you approach them at night, are almost painful to look at. The glare puts the rest of the road scene in relative shadow, making any hazard that might be there dificult to spot. Anything that distracts attention, especially at night, making the job of driving more difficult, cannot be be a good thing. Unless it's what's called progress these days. Read more

In Aylesbury I'm thinking of the stretch from the Walton St/Equitable Life roundabout along to the roundabout near B&Q. But actually the road from the Gatehouse Rd/Oxford Rd junction past the bus station to Walton St has been re-engineered - bus lanes and traffic signals aplenty...

Hi Just bought myself a MK III Cortina that's been garaged since 1983. It's rock solid but unfortunately the previous owner has lost the keys. I chiselled of the screws on the steering lock and got it running with a screwdriver. Does anyone know if it's possible to have a set cut ?
many thanks Read more

Had a phone call late yesterday from one of the friends I had spoken to earlier. Said he had spoken to another Cortina fan about the 5 speed box. He said it was never an option. Apparently it is not to difficult to fit the Sierra box but it does require a number of minor mods, such as the gearbox mounting, and a different prop shaft on some models. It seems unlikely Ford would have bothered during the run-out phase.

Just wondering the logistics of being able to drive an E36 convertible, 318, so only 115bhp. Thats the same power as a Focus 1.6. 20 with 2 years no claims and no convictions whatsoever. Only thing is insurance group 14 - i got a quote for a 90s MX-5 which is of a similar classification and that wasn't too bad....what are the opinions? Read more

hmm. the coupe just doesnt seem as special as the convertible. i can picture a nice summer's day being very enjoyable with the roof off. blue, which model of e46 coupe did you drive? the e36 316 looks like it would be very cheap to insure, would the 318 e46 be considerably more expensive?
