In a nutshell my 2002 Volvo S80 climate control is making a noise like a constant release of air, almost as if punctured. If I turn the system off the noise stops immediately. As soon as I turn it on it starts making the noise immediately. I've fiddled about with the controls and have noticed that it is now not blowing anywhere near as cold as I would expect it to be when put on maximum blow on the coldest setting.
Anybody any ideas what is amiss here?
Thanks.

Hi All,
My mate parked in Nottingham over the weekend, it was on-street, he got back to the car and had been ticketed by a private company, which wants £80 (doubling to £160 if not paid in a week). He's taken photos of the car, there were no signs he could see, but after getting the ticket, there was a sign across the street on a building that was set back from the road warning about the parking. Is there any recourse with these companies or is it a case of being stitched and swallowing the £80 fine? Read more

There must be a set of dotty DoT (or is it DfT or something even more contrived?) regs that specify a forest of traffic signals at junctions and pedestrian crossings. In Aylesbury, a new set of pedestrian lights (part of a road revamp that has caused congestion where none existed before) has SIX light boxes in each direction, three at different heights (one so high it's only useful to top-deck bus passengers) on each side of the carriageway.
Are fewer lights demonstrably ineffective? Is there a real cost-benefit? Or are people in Whitehall just covering their backsides so that if there's an accident at one of these locations they can say 'Well there was abolutely no question that the lights weren't visible'?
Of course, these multiple in-yer-face lights are of the latest, brightest LED kind - the sort, actually, that when you approach them at night, are almost painful to look at. The glare puts the rest of the road scene in relative shadow, making any hazard that might be there dificult to spot. Anything that distracts attention, especially at night, making the job of driving more difficult, cannot be be a good thing. Unless it's what's called progress these days. Read more
In Aylesbury I'm thinking of the stretch from the Walton St/Equitable Life roundabout along to the roundabout near B&Q. But actually the road from the Gatehouse Rd/Oxford Rd junction past the bus station to Walton St has been re-engineered - bus lanes and traffic signals aplenty...
Hi Just bought myself a MK III Cortina that's been garaged since 1983. It's rock solid but unfortunately the previous owner has lost the keys. I chiselled of the screws on the steering lock and got it running with a screwdriver. Does anyone know if it's possible to have a set cut ?
many thanks Read more
Had a phone call late yesterday from one of the friends I had spoken to earlier. Said he had spoken to another Cortina fan about the 5 speed box. He said it was never an option. Apparently it is not to difficult to fit the Sierra box but it does require a number of minor mods, such as the gearbox mounting, and a different prop shaft on some models. It seems unlikely Ford would have bothered during the run-out phase.
Just wondering the logistics of being able to drive an E36 convertible, 318, so only 115bhp. Thats the same power as a Focus 1.6. 20 with 2 years no claims and no convictions whatsoever. Only thing is insurance group 14 - i got a quote for a 90s MX-5 which is of a similar classification and that wasn't too bad....what are the opinions? Read more
hmm. the coupe just doesnt seem as special as the convertible. i can picture a nice summer's day being very enjoyable with the roof off. blue, which model of e46 coupe did you drive? the e36 316 looks like it would be very cheap to insure, would the 318 e46 be considerably more expensive?

I stayed awake all the way through it!
Just bought a Zetec-S (130bhp 2004) so probably going to be posting a few questions on here.
First one is that every picture I've ever seen of the engine bay of a TDCi, the engine has a large plastic cowel/cover covering the entire engine. My car hasn't got one - should it have?
I've also got a noise that sounds like an exhaust hole blowing but only seems to happen when I'm in too high a gear for the speed I'm doing - is this normal?
If this is normal, is it right that I can't drive around town at 30mph in 4th gear?
TIA
Hughie

52 mpg... I'd be very content with that.

Hi, I have the same hissing sound in my v70. Can you tell me what you found out? Thank you!
