My '54 Forester has the factory fit satnav system. Unfortunately the dvd is well out of date. Subaru want to relieve me of £350 for an updated disc. Given I can get Tom Tom or similar for a lot less it this is a price too far for me.
I've tried looking on ebay but have never seen a Subaru DVD come up. I have established the unit is built by Denso, does anyone know of any other car makers who fit the same system in their car? I'm wondering if I can buy a Nissan DVD or whatever and have my car accrept it.
Any guidance appreciated.

I clipped mirrors, and smashed the glass. The replacement glass had a heating element (the original hadn't), but while I was paying for it the enthusiastic staff fitted it before I had a chance to see how it was done. Full marks to Brookside garage, Cemaes bay, Anglesey.
Now I'm thinking I could probably pick up the wiring for the mirror heater in the loom (It comes on with the heated rear window), but how do I remove the glass without breaking it. Has anyone done this please? Read more
Thanks for that. I've tried, but chicken out after applying what I consider to be sufficient force (I don't want to fork out for another glass).
I haven't got a Haynes, I live in hope of them producing one for my model, they did in the end for the Focus, but never did for the Kia Pride (I've had an Aussie one on order for months).
We made a mistake, we should have ordered MrsP's car with the centre armrest, anyone know whether this is available as a retrofit extra ? Read more
Also the MKV armrest is totally different and far more ergonomic than the MKIV item that gets in the way of the handbrake.
Hi
wondering if you can help.
I have measured the signal from my flywheel sensor with a scope and have got a very good reading at the ecu connector plug,
now here is the strange thing when i plug the connector back in to the ecu, the signal dissapears.
Reading taken at the back of the ecu plug.
Also the ecu has been tested twice , once at a specialist and once in a friends car.
Any ideas , faulty sensor maybe ?
Thanks

it sounds like the sensor has developed a short to ground on one of its pins. Time for a new one, or possibly just a new cable form the sensor to the ECU depending on where the short is.

I'm looking to replace my Volvo S40 TD. I need a car which could do 80 miles commuting trip daily plus almost 200 miles per week for pizza delivery job. I would be doing 25-30k miles each year. I'm ideally looking for a diesel car with a modest budget of around £1k. Reliability and economy are the only things I'm after the rest would be bonus. What could you suggest? Thanks Read more
I've seen a T plate 99 Mazda 323 2.0 TD with 133k on the clock and I should be able to get that one for £1200. Just wondering how much life the engine has got left in it? Are Mazda diesel engines good enough to rack up 250 to 300k miles? I'm quite keen about this car so would like to know what you *experts* think. Thanks
From comments on www.fiatforum.com/panda-new/100397-tyre-wear.html it seems that some New Pandas are showing excess tyre wear on the inner aspect of the front tyres. From the posts, it looks to me as if the steering geometry is not being set correctly at the factory. Although on the site folk are referring to tracking problems I suspect it is more a camber problem.
Anyone out there working in Fiat land able to elucidate? Read more
My Scenic is now 3 years old so out of warranty. I have heard all about the EGR issues and my car, although showing no signs of this, has had a life of stop/start town journeys which seem to be a factor in EGR issues.
If I decide to keep the car, I would probably want to buy a warranty. Have looked at warranty direct but unsure as to what "category" EGR's come under to check the wording. Is the problem EGR's or does it fall under another general heading?
Any help appreciated. Read more
Excellent Xileno, much appreciated.
1996 1.4 CL Polo with power steering. On occassions the steering gives out a sort of "rubbery squeeking" type of noise.
I don't think it is related to the pump - sounds more like rubber parts being rubbed together.
Any ideas? Read more
Thanks for the suggestion - will investigate.
Cheers
I have a Renault Clio 1.4 RT on an 'N' plate. The car has single point injection and is an automatic. I came to start it yesterday and it did not fire up, although the engine did turn. Usually when you turn the ignition on you get a relay click under the bonnet, the fuel pump buzzes and the fast idol speed udjusts itself on the throttle body. It is not doing this? My friend who is a mechanic came to have a quick look yesterday and he bridged one of the relays and the car started but when you took the keys out the engine kept running but there was severe load on the alternator. All other systems are fine, the dash comes on fine and all fuses have been checked. My gut feeling is it could be one of these relay's? But if anyone else has any other idea's I will give it a try. What causes the aircon unit in a car to need re-gassing? does it leak?. Am I mistakenly under the impression it works in a similar way to a domestic fridge, you never hear of those needing re-gassing.
The compressor fitted to a car is a semi-hermetic type. It has an "open" shaft drive with a seal on the shaft. That is one possible leak spot. The compressor is fitted to a "moving" engine, the rest of the bits are fitted to a "static" bodyshell, hence flexible joints are needed. They can leak. Most of the rest of the joints on a car are mechanically made with flare type fittings, more possible leak points.
A domestic fridge has a hermetic compressor, all the moving bits are inside a welded shell. The pipes and electrical connections which pass through this shell are fixed at the factory and tested.
The rest of the system is brazed together at the point of manufacture, and can be tested. The number of actual pipe joints needed in a domestic fridge is kept to a minimum and should be far fewer than a car aircon system.
As jc2 says once the fridge has been delivered on the lorry and installed, it then has a nice static life.

Sadly its very out of date. I have version 1 that doesn't know about the M6 toll road! I have also found myself apparently driving over fields in Peterborough and Northants.
Whilst I'm having a gripe (and I really do love the XT) the clock display that shows to fill the screen when the satnav is switched off is so naff it still makes me grate my teeth. It should certainly be better in a car that has a list price in the low £20k's.
PS thanks for the pocketgpsworld link, its very much appreciated
