Hi people,
We are looking to change our car and am looking for some expert advice.
I have a 3-dr X Reg 206 1.1 LX with 63000 on the clock and we are looking to change this for a more family orientated car. Our four month old baby is growing fast so we need a 5 dr vehicle.
I am looking around X, Y or 51 reg and around 50000 max with a budget of £3500-£4000 and have looked at the newer shape mondeo, laguna and picasso but am looking for feedback and other recommendations? The laguna seem reasonably well priced?
Any advice would be great!! Read more
A Signum is a good choice other than the fact it only has 4 seats which has to count against it as a 'family' car.
I thought about a 3.0 V6 Signum with all the toys myself as a hack to get remapped and pile the mile on. In the end though I decided a Golf GTi would probably cost me less overall just because of depreciation.
Just noticed and dont know how long it has been missing but the coolant tank cap on my old Citroen C15D van is no longer there, question being, am I going to do any damage/risk a breakdown if I keep using the van until I can get a replacement next week?, also any ideas where I can get one?, have asked a few breakers on Ebay but they havent got back to me yet.
Cheers

"More than 40,000 sets of number plates were stolen in 2006,"
"Police blame rules registering plate buyers and suppliers and make fake plates more difficult to get hold of." ??? I do not think this has much impact on the situation
Can we but hope that a decent system will be implemented soon or do I detect another computer fiasco on the horizon and some unhappy "cherished" number plate owners ?

I am a terrorist.
I have a perfectly valid passport issued by Country X including a perfectly valid visa to enter UK. I have a perfectly valid credit card issued by my well funded terrorist network.
I enter a car hire firm hire a car for a month put a bomb in the back drive to my destination and blow it up.
Now how has the new number plate laws done anything to impede my plans in any way?
The wifes car broke down yesterday with clutch failure which sounded like the cable had broken. It was trailered to a VW dealer, to my amazment they called me and said the pedal box needed replacing and they would do it free of charge!!!!. Apparently its around £600,,,
Its a Y reg with 62K
Is this a known problem?
Am i correct in assuming that the pedal has snapped.

Yes,this is a well known fault. It is not actually the pedal that snaps but the pivot pin for the clutch mechanism. Poor / inadequate welding is usually the problem.hth
My Daughter needs a spare key cut for her micra. It is the type with the built in chip in the key plastic. Has this got to be a main dealer purchase?
Appreciate advice. Read more
I assume you mean chip for the immobiliser.
Key cutters like Timpsons, or even security shops, dry cleaners and cobblers that do key cutting are your best bet, and can duplicate the coding in the chip in a matter of seconds (worryingly). Prices don't normally vary between these shops by more than a couple of pounds.
Price depends on whether the chip is encrypted - if it isn't, it'll probably be £25-£35, if it is encrypted then £55-£70.
If you want anything with remote locking/alarm control, then it's Nissan dealer i'm afraid.
I just sold my mk3 golf gti 2.0 when it was fine, now the person who i sold it to wants a refund as he claims the car does not get in any gear and just bearly reaching home the car is now a none runner, he has been adviced it needs a new clutch and gear box, i wont take the car back but, feel i should help in some way.
what could the problem be and how much will it cost to sort out?

Ask him to put a full description on the fault in writting and for him to expalin why there was no sign of these problems when he drove it. This will help him focus on the chain of events that can have caused this. It is still not your problem. He may have trashed the bos smashed a few engagement teath off and the box chewed itself up, not your problem. Regards Peter
Was woken from my deep slumbers at 3am this morning by a shocking explosion which shook the houses in my street. Initially, thought it was someone breaking into my house (with grenades?) Belted down to my kitchen armed with a fluffy slipper in one hand and a leather belt in the other. Then saw the tell-tale glow of flames through the kitchen window. Some 'orrible git had stolen an R reg A4 cabrio', dumped it in the service road at the back of my house and set light to it. Petrol tank exploding was what turfed me out of bed. Don't know who the owner is, but poor person has lost his/her pride and joy.
Next morning, what a mess in daylight. Next to nothing left of it.
Mind you, met some neighbours I didn't know I had at 3am, all quite jolly in a gritty urban sort of way. Slurping cups of tea to a Beirut style backdrop of flames, acid smoke, tyres bursting, the "nee-narrs" arriving on blues and twos, too late to do anything.
Couldn't sleep after that, so put the washing on and did some serious ironing whilst watching dawn arrive.
Just thought I'd share with you a normal scene from the streets of greater east London. Read more
oooh! i used to get that at least twice a week where I lived off
the Old Kent Road a few years back.
[pedant mode on] Would it have been based on the 80 not the A4 if
it was R reg or was it on a private plate??[pedant mode most definately off]
:-)
aye, 80/coupe/cabrio were all one family
I bought a Mondeo with the front 'keys' missing. I bought the front panel from ebay which I understand isnt actually coded as such so it is a 'one fits all' thing.
The radio never had any sign of life before they keys were put in and none afterwards either. Am I right in thinking that even without the front panel on there should have been some sign of life from the unit, maybe asking for a code or something? Either that or the info I have been given about the same panel effectively working in all 7000 Radios is incorrect?!?! Read more
Thanks for the earlier replies re the front panel.
When I press it it the display comes alive and asks me for the code.
I have trawled through the paperwork with the car but cannot find it. Is there a website where I can get the code for my radio. I'd buy a package from ebay but I imagine most of them are fake and a waste of money. When the HG is sorted I'd quite like my sounds!
Thanks
Stuart

You dont need to go to an expensive specialist- its quite a straight forward job.
Yes you need to change the whole hub assembly. Have some new bearings pressed in while you change them over.
If you have 15" wheel or larger get some caliper carriers from a corrado, then you can fit 280mm discs and have decent brakes. The 90 on calipers are ok but its better to fit the g60 calipers found on g60 golf carrado, and a few other volkswagens.
You will also need to change the master cylinder as the small brake cars have a smaller diameter one. You can fit the 22m version from the later cars, or better still buy an early Corado VR6 servo and master cylinder for the best brake feel. A mark 2 with the 280mm discs, big calipers and corrado cylinder stops very well- i had the setup on my mk.2 Jetta Gti 16v.
While you are doing all this change the brake hoses, use new VW originals or get some braided stainless steel ones. Standard genuine VW pads will be fine.
While your doing the brakes check the "rear brake proportioning valve" not sureof its proper name any more as these are prone to leakage.
Let me know how you get on and if you need any further advice.
