Jonnys06

Hello,

I have a friend who is turning 17 in June and am looking to find a car for her. I have looked at several different cars including Rover Metros. The only problem is can you get the parts? Her dad seems to think you can't? The cars are dirt cheap but if the parts are going to cost a fortune or be impossible to get, then it kinda defeats the object of buying one.

Thanks Read more

It was such an unnecessary blight on what was otherwise a decent engine.
It'll be interesting to see how the Nanjing N-Series performs -- as I don't imagine
the Chinese company spent too much on the modification.

I beleave they are fitting steel headgaskets.

Anyone know where to buy Peugeot 306 HDI calipers (rear) for a 2000 w reg (107k) at a good price. Got quotes of £62.50 +vat each from GSF.

The hand brake has always been poor does not hold the car properly, and the both calipers are binding. Mechanic thought it may be the linkages on the calipers themselves that have seized. Any ideas / help appreciated.

Was hoping it may be the handbrake cable, as both calipers dragging sounds suspect. Trouble is mechanics seem quick to want to change calipers.
Don't want to have to get new calipers spend over £200 and still have a problem.

I was looking at caliper repair kits, but not sure this is the problem. Weather has not been too good (apart from today!).

try unipart, they are usually quite good, failing that any of the usual auction sites should do it

I own a 9 month old Ford Fiesta 1.4 (left hand drive - as I am in Gibraltar) that was bought from the local Ford main dealer when new. Recently the car has started to make an unusual 'metallic sounding tick or click' in certain situations. The noise only occurs at low speed; for instance when pulling away from lights or accelerating from a very slow speed in traffic. It does not seem to be linked to the clutch (as it can occur when the clutch is both dis-engaged or engaged) and happens when accelerating or decelerating (although not under braking or at steady speeds) and does not seem to occur at speeds in excess of 20-25kmh.

It occurs frequently (but not every time I accelerate or slow down) and is relatively easy to replicate if I drive the car in a slightly more aggressive manner (hard acceleration or low gear induced deceleration). It seems to be coming from the front left hand side of the car although the exact location still remains a mystery. The local dealer has had the car in twice and can replicate the noise (by driving up and down in the workshop!) but cannot identify the exact cause. He is reluctant to start changing items without knowing the exact cause. Can you help?

It is a petrol and it does not seem to be temperature dependant. All very confusing!

Near to where I live there is a dual carriageway leading to a roundabout. There are no road markings to tell you which lane to be in.

The signpost in advance of the roundabout shows 3 exits, all of which are single carriageways.

The first is a major A road with the road being shown as wider on the roundabout drawing. The second exit is shown as being at a 1 o'clock position with a 3rd exit at the 3 o'clock point.

Just before you get to the roundabout there is a seperate white-backed sign with a 'direct ahead' arrow stating the name of the village that is a destination on exit 2.

So it is clear if I was taking the first exit I would approch the roundabout in the lefthand lane. If I am going to take the second exit, which is the correct lane of the dual carriageway to be in?

I always understood that if you are going to exit up to the 12o'clock position you should be in the lefthand lane but the seperate sign showing 'straight ahead' arrow has thrown me a bit.

In reality I have seen people using both lanes for this exit and I think we are all confused. I just want to know I am doing the right thing!

Any ideas? Read more

There is always a potential complication when one of the exits is marked as a main road, and given a wider depiction on the sign. This implies, and sometimes this is backed up by lane markings, that both approach lanes can use that exit, because it is in effect a "fast track" through all the lesser turnings.

In the OP's case, this is so with the first exit, so I had pictured the scenario as going to be a query with BOTH approach lanes being used by heavy traffic virtually all turning left. That certainly causes problems if you want to go straight on but stay in the left hand lane, because people cut across fast to turn left.

......Going back to my home country for a holiday: France!
It's the first time I am "going abroad" since I passed my driving test a little over 2 years ago. Passed when I was 22.
Anyhow, I am a little worried! Will i get used to driving on the other side of the road very quickly? How does driving over there compare to driving over here? Any tips? My dad just keeps telling me that the roads are a lot quieter over there, motorways are nearly deserted. Sounds good as we're going for a long trip and I could make use of the cruise control for a long time instead of the switching on and off you constantly seem to be doing over here!
The only other thing I wanted to ask is wether my trip seems do-able and realistic to you all, here we go:

1) Leeds-Folkstone (12th June) (5 hour drive)
Eurotunnel

2)Calais- Strasbourg (13th June) (05H30 mn drive) (This is the city where i spent most of my life so would like to show SWMBO

3) Strasbourg- Lausanne (15th June) (03hr 25 mn drive)

4) Lausanne- Toulon (17th June) (05h55mn drive)

5) Toulon -Millau Bridge (22nd June)(03h35 mn drive)

6) Millau- Paris (23 June) (05 h55 mn drive)

7) Paris- Calais (25 June) (02h 45 mn drive)
Eurotunnel

8) Folkstone- Leeds (26 June) (5 hours drive)

As you can tell I've done my homework, but does this seem realistic or will i really be too tired! I've never done such a long trip so I wondered if any fellow backroomer had done anything similar and could give me any advice really! Read more

TT3 and TT5 (using a PDA) both change to kph when you change the distance to kilometers.

Can't see the go units being much different.

For a long time there had been none of the menace windscreen cleaners at junctions, but over the last week they've sprung up again at Hanger Lane Gyratory, Vauxhall bridge and on the south circular at Streatham, to name a few
I thought this practice had been banned they are such a nuisance and always hold up traffic when the lights change, because it's in their benefit to do so.
how do others feel about them and stop them from doing their windscreen - if a polite refuseal doesn't dissuade them I put the windscreen wipers on -.

There in Manchester as well, near the Sainsury's at Regent Road in Salford. I've told one to go away and managed to avoid another, but it is really annoying. Not only that, I frequently have no change on me, so I tell them before they get near me, but they keep on coming......

Just a quick warning to anyone driving in Cumbria from today, 1st June 2007:

The 'safety' camera vans will be able to operate in ANY location from today and their locations will NOT be fixed or advertised.

It is likely that cameras may operate in pairs or threes in a short stretch of road, so watch out!

Yet another money making scam from the Safety Scamera Partnership.

EXACTLY Ravenger - Spot On! Policing is no longer about crime prevention = Stop it before it happens but Catch people when it has happened, if you have the manpower to do so, and deal with the consequences. If we had more visible deterrent policing to prevent crime we wouldn't need finger tip searches, sealed crime scenes and van loads of forensic bods to investigate what has happened.
