I have a 2004 2.0l FSI Golf and need to order some coolant and LONG LIFE oil.
I'd like to get it on line, if I can, to save trekking to a dealer.
Does anybody know:
a) Who sells it on line
b) what grades i need - I do not have the handbook handy and have forgotten the specs.
Many thanks Read more

Appropriate coolant you can get from ECP, by mail order if you wish. In fact they probably sell the long-life oil as well...

I left my Vectra-C parked this morning, locked up, windows closed. When I returned to it a little while later all the windows were fully open. The doors were still locked and the alarm was set. The car behaved perfectly well the rest of the time I was out.
Is this a known problem, or just a one off ? The Vauxhall main dealer say they have never heard of it.
Car is a 2006 1.8 petrol, not quite a year old. Read more

Thanks for that, DD. I did wonder that myself, as I was carrying something bulky. I hope that's what happened. This is why I queried it with the service man at the dealer when I phoned and they said it couldn't. It wouldn't surprise me if he had not come across this. I'll see if it does it again. I think you may well be right, as the car had nevere played it since I had it.

I was puzzled by the piece in Saturday's Torygraph Motoring about the 'new' Yaris. It said something along the lines of:

- Introduced 1999
- Facelifted c2005
- New now.

But the 'new' one pictured looks like what i thought to be the new one (new shape, "big small" per Clement Freud in the ads) introduced a couple of years ago.

Can anyone explain?

I HAD figured it right then. Thanks.

Does anyone have any figures?

Sure, on book price German cars might appear to have superb depreciation and Mondeos very bad, but when you take into account discounts, things look less favourable.

Are there any stats showing depreciation as a percentage of the best discounted new price after 3 years. Read more

I did some analysis on here a couple of years ago (all figures from the Glasses guide at the time) ...

Value of £21k BMW estate
After 1 year £18699.
After 2 years £14319.
After 3 years £11407.
After 4 years £9186.
After 5 years £7200.

Value of £21k Mondeo estate
After 1 year £13143.
After 2 years £9813.
After 3 years £7443.
After 4 years £5724.
After 5 years £4490.

So if you buy a new car every 2 or 3 years, there's almost nothing to choose between them (as long as you make sure you shop at HJ prices and get £4k off the Mondeo).

If you buy your cars at 2 years old, the Mondeo is a much better financial proposition than the BMW if you believe that each has a similar useful life.

Not sure if that's a good sign or not.

Perhaps a case of do as I say, not do as I do....

Anyone care to do the sums on the Roomster diesel HJ suggested? Three years at 10k pa seems barely worthwhile for a diesel, but maybe the SH market will be gagging for them?

Hi,

I'm swapping a 2004 Focus 1.8 Zetec for my first diesel later this week (2004 320d) and going through a few threads on this forum I see some hints that driving diesels might be different from petrol-engined cars - no engine braking etc. So how does it differ? What rpm should I be changing gear etc? I know about the 'surge' from the test drive (gave me a nice grin!) but what are the practical differences in the way you have to drive?

Cheers,
Dave

P.S. I'm not interested in a petrol vs diesel debate, plenty of that on other threads! Read more

Get yourself a Octavia 140bhp diesel with DSG, pop it in sport mode on floor it......my god the thing shifts and changes gear so quickly the power never has a change to subside. Brings a smile to my face and a pound chest.....why did I wait this long to have my first diesel car?

I observed a coach at lunchtime on the M40 north bound near Oxford, with a PL number plate and with a significant number of passengers on board.
Oh and it was in lane one travelling at an indicated 90mph. (The vehicle I was in has a reasonably accurate speedo ref TomTom etc.)
Is this a record speed or just very common? ( as I then saw another PL reg coach just a few miles ahead travelling close to that speed.

I think the PL says it all. I often see articulated lorries with PL plates in the outside lane of the M4. Especially if a IK HGV is overtaking another UK HGC and using up lanes 1 and 2.

On June 20th, British Airports Authority is instituting new drop-off areas and regulations for Gatwick South terminal.

Only coaches and the official airport taxis (Checker Cars - actually not taxis, but private hire) will be allowed to use the upper level.

Everybody else - Limousines, chauffeur driven cars et al will have to use the lower level. Passengers will either have to wait for a lift to take them to the upper level for check-in or walk up a steep ramp pushing a trolley with their luggage.

With BAA's impeccable reverse logic this means that people the least money (coach travellers) will get the best service, whilst people paying the most money (and more likely to be travelling First or Business) will get the worst service!

Yes but we aren't all. lean fit (and not very good at tennis) like you!
Supposing we are 85 years old?

Ah so what...who cares if you're 85..if you're fit enough to move under your own steam to and around an airport, and then off on the plane, you can handle a lift ride or an inclined walkway. And if you're disabled you'll get help. Of course the 85 year old isn't going to be sprinting up and down, doesn't mean it's unfair for them to take that lift ride though...give over

CAn any of you guys tell me the make and model of the vehicle in the pic below?

Mk1 MX5 indeed. I reckon it could be an imported Eunos Roadster on, from the look of the back. Body kit on the front bumper and sideskirts but not the back is a bit odd though, methinks.

Just changed the front-offside wheel on my wife's 1998 Daewoo Matiz (refitting repaired tyre) after having the steel spare on it for a fortnight.

Subsequently I've have found that the steering wheel is off-centre when driving straight and doesn't quite feel "right" to me in it's movement, in terms of the resistance you feel when applying lock.

Any suggestions as to what might be the cause? Thanks in advance.

Would the markings differ if they're asymmetrical?

"Unlike a directional tyre, an asymmetric tyre can be used in any position on the vehicle. It is very important however, to follow such wording as 'inside' and 'outside' on the tyre's sidewalls to ensure that the tyre is fitted 'the right way round'. As with directional tyres, incorrect fitment can seriously impair performance. And, again if you do use a wheel with an incorrectly fitted asymmetric tyre, it should be regarded strictly as a 'Temporary spare'."
