I assume, if you've owned the car from new, that you have searched high and low for the key code card that your Mazda dealer would have given to you?

Hope it's not with the key!

You don't have to have a new black Golf to be a mod.... but it helps.

As many of you have guessed, judging by the emails I've received over the last few days, one choice stood out once he did the decent thing and volunteered.

Your new moderator, joining me, DD and Smokie, is.....

Pugugly

He now has all the necessary stuff, along with a much cherished edit button.

Please be gentle, at least for his first week. Welcome to the team PU.

Thanks to everyone else who volunteered. It was very nice and warm and fluffy to know that so many of you cared.

(This is probably as good a time as any to remind you all that the mods can't answer questions that are emailed to us about any issues you may be having - motoring, legal or otherwise - we will only tell you to post it in the forum or email HJ's letters page.)

I was watching 'An MG Reborn' programme yesterday and it featured someone who owned an 'original' MGB GT V8.

It seemed the only original part of it were the 'G' reg number plates and the V8 badges on the front grille and boot. The body shell was pcompletely new, engine was a 4.2 litre V8 as fitted to Range Rovers (changed from the 3.5 litre originally fitted), gearbox was a 5 speed and the wheels, brakes and suspension were all upgraded to racing spec.

Despite the car being completely new it still qualified for classic car tax i.e. £0 per annum, I assume because the guy still had the registration documents. I fail to see how a new car could be considered a classic and to my mind it was no more than a kit car.

Does any know the regulations? I assume as long as the body shell is the same shape as the original car it maintains it's classic status? Read more

Firstly can I say how I enjoyed this programme ...

With the exception of "A plane is born" I have enjoyed all the "Is Born" series.

My 1999 Mazda 323 has rust bubbling through a rear wheel arch (result of a badly repaired scrape years back). I've been told by 2 bodyshops that if they simply grind out the rust, fill and paint, the rust will come back and that they need to cut out the affected metal or replace the panel completely. Quotes are between £250-£400 for the work.

I want to hang on to the car for at least 3 years. It's reliable (touch wood) and fairly cheap to run. It has various other scratches and dings that I'm not too bothered about but the rust bubbles concern me as they are slowly spreading round the wheel arch. Do I need to get this sorted - ie, will it lead to MOT failure down the line? Is there a cheaper way of sorting it that will prevent the rust coming back?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

My partner has recently had a rear end bump in her car. Other party has admitted full liability, and his insurers are dealing direct with her. While her car is in the garage she stressed to them that a corsa / Ka etc was no good and she would need a like for like replacement for the Sharan due to having 3 kids in car seats, plus friend on occasions. They agreed and are providing a car through Enterprise.

Has anyone had a full size people carrier through them, and if so what do they tend to run? Tried asking them, but they were very vague and just said you will get what we have on the day!

My interest lies in the fact that I quite like the new Galaxy so view this as an oportunity to get an extended test drive............ Read more

I had a like-for-like replacement from Enterprise when my Avensis was out of action. They supplied a 2.0 TDi Sharan. Couldn't stand the engine, gearbox and noise levels but at least the bus had a nice view when driving around town :)

NB - I might not have liked the Sharan much, but a few weeks later another punch in the nose for the Avensis saw me spending a week in a Chevrolet Matiz.

On both occasions getting the Avensis back was a complete joy and I appreciated it all the more.

Sorry i do not know how to place my original dicussion about this on this page. I will update once i know the outcome, Graham.

Hi folks,

I run an X reg Astra 1.8 16V and i'm getting some nasty vibration through the steering wheel. The wheel shudders left to right.

This problem's been around for a while and i initially suspected that one of the front wheels was out of balance but i've had them balenced and the problem remains. Generally occurs at 50 - 75mph but it's not guaranteed to happen, i think its dependent upon the road surface. I've inspected the front tyres and there is a pattern of uneven wear - outside shoulder wearing more than center of tyre and inside shoulder by about 3 mm.

Is it purely a tracking issue or the sign of something else.

Tyres changed at 60k miles now up to 75k miles.

Car mechanics are not my strongest discipline but i've worked on a tractor where the track rod ends were worn and this lead to some shudders through the steering. Could this be the cause?

Many thanks for your wisdom.

piston power

uneaven wear on inside & outer edges sounds like tyres are too soft what pressure are you running at? when there worn uneaven this will make it very hard to ballance correctly.
out of shape tyres also cause this & rear tyres also. good luck

Hi everyone.

My wife is learning to drive and so we'll need to get a runabout. Since she's not a born driver, I am expecting that there might be one or two collisions in the first years of ownership!

So I'm looking for advice on what makes a car cheaper to repair from accident damage. Many years ago I was told that colour-coded bumpers were something to avoid, but nearly every car seems to have them now.

Is there anything else to watch out for?

To put this into context this is what we're considering:

Budget: £2000 - £4000
Engine: 1.2 litre petrol
Insurance: Group 1 or 2
Doors: 4

All advice gratefully received.
