i have a peugeot 306 td 99 reg, it doesnt rev past 4000 rpm, been told it might have a restrictor fitted.
does anyone who where i sholud look to dissconect this or if it is a different problem all together.

Could be a sticking throttle cable. Check the routing of the cable to see if it is routed correctly and isn't caught on anything and give it a dose of WD40 or similar to ensure it moves freely.

4k rpm is getting close to the limit anyway for an XUDT engine - are you sure there's a problem? I'd check the throttle cable first - at the injection pump there is a serrated plastic adjuster - make sure that if you pull this back away from the pump the cable starts to move - if it doesn't the cable is too slack and you may not be getting full throttle. Pull it back till the cable's tight then move the spring clip to keep it there.

I used to have a Pug306xtdt and had too much slack in the throttle cable as Richard describes. Didn't notice it happenig as it did it over time but once repaired..................
