Having met Norman Dewis numerous times at the MIRA test track when I worked on the development of Dunlop disc brakes for Jaguar in the 1960s, I would love to receive his autobiography as a birthday present. tinyurl.com/22s2w8
Any offers ? ;-)

hi i have a peugeot expert van 1.9 turbo diesel 98 S plate has done 165k. it actually goes well but i have a couple of questions that i need some mechanical advice on. first thing, when i start it for the first time of the day it doesnt seem to be firing on all cylinders, like its mis-timing, and wont usually start. then second time no problem starts a treat. the only trouble when it does start i get some blue smoke.
ok thats the first problem, the second is i am getting black smoke when i am driving along. not all the time. i get it when i floor it in first and second, say pulling out of junctions but again not all the time.
i also get black smoke when i go up steep hills. say im going up the hill in 3rd and the revs start to go down. so i change down to 2nd but its high revs so up to 3rd but its not enough power to pull. when its in 3rd it smokes but when its in 2nd and high revs, no smoke !!!!!! its like low revs smoke and high revs none... then when i get to the T junction and pull away 1st and 2nd smoke again.
I dont know when the last service was. i have checked the oil and thereis plenty in there. could there be too much oil ?
i ahve also checked the air filter and there was some oil in there!!!
What do you guys reckon ???????

As said so many times, Get a good service and the Glow plugs checked first.
The latest Autocar features a road test of the new Mondeo:
Round one the 2.0 TDCi trounces a 2.0 TDI Passat, round two it beats the 320d, Autocar reckon is is every bit as rewarding to drive as the 3 Series and although no more economical and not as quick they say overall it pips the 320d.
It is true to say that it is not a like for like comparison, the Passat and Mondeo are larger and therefore heavier though much more practical and space efficient. In 3 Series terms better perhaps to compare the 140 bhp 2.0 318d which is closer on price and performance to both the Mondeo 2.0 TDCi and Passat TDi 140 and, to be fair, more economical than both due in part to less weight.

Have a look in here, no particular magic involved in finding this, just click on "Search Forum" then put "306" in the subject line and "airbag" in message body and as quick as an airbag deploying there it is in front of you - PU Read more
Many thanks MerlinTec - I found your response after experiencing the same problem on my '99 meridian TD and it worked - no doubt saving me a small fortune! Only the aircon to sort now - kind regards Dav1d
Gear change on my 1994 1.6 Corolla is getting a bit "sticky".....
occasionally difficult to get into 1st, and sometimes reluctant to pull out of 3rd.
Seems to be OK when cold, but particularly bad after a long fast motorway run, then when off hte motorway it is quite sticky afterwards.
have done 114,000 miles, mainly all London traffic work, so its obviously getting worn and had a hard life...
As the cars not worth much, can anyone recommend a different gearoil I can change to and/or an additive to add to the gearbox as well that might coax a few more miles out of it and just ease it a bit.
Its only when its been on the motorway for a while and then driving it on ordinary roads afterwards that its really getting noticeable, but I'm sure it will get worse with time.

maybe worn gear linkage/clutch?? gear oil if you pop along to your motor factor they will supply you with the correct grade as listed in there manual.. good luck.
No. Not my vehicle.
I was treated, on Fathers' day to a visit to the Brooklands Centenary Festival.
For £5 I was driven, by a MB driver, for a couple of twisty small laps in the above beast.
They had an example of each AMGs except the S and the McLaren
I was waiting for the SL or the SLK but just as I got to the front they had to be "rested" to cool the brakes and tyres so it was the CLS.
As the driver said " it is not usual to be hustling a two ton vehicle like this"
It was great value for me even if I felt the physical effects for half an hour after.
I feel sure many expected it to be a more expensive ride and so did not enquire.
Normal regular (longer) rides start at £25.
Even though MB is close to my home I had not been there before.
I was surprised at the extent of the track and the showrooms.
We were able to wander through all three display floors and sample the whole range with no sign of a sales person but just a few polishers following the unwashed :-)
The whole day was very impressive with about 450 listed cars attending.
The McLaren F1 was obviously impressive even on the limited track but it was great to see Sir Stirling Moss in the classic MB.
Moved over from Tech (where it was resting) to here at Henry's request - PU

The lack of threads on the Centenary made me think I was the only one who went - but obviously I was wrong! It was a thoroughly enjoyable day out for fathers day - and not too busy. We were casually having our pick nick lunch and over wandered Prince Michael of Kent to climb in the car we were sitting next to! All very relaxed.
Didn't get a ride in the AMGs but the kids have at least chosen our next car - a lwb S500 with all the bells and whistles. I am afraid they will be disappointed!
Hi Folks,
I am on here really for some moral support if you do not mind!?
To cut a long story short I came across a lovely car (low miles, etc) in a car trader magazine, went to test drive, and fell for it big time. I went through all the paperwork, in his house and noted the FSH, spare keys and MOT certs, which were all in place - apart, that is - from the v5c registration document. The dealer has the green slip marked cherished number plate and explained the full story about the change of plates with the old owner.
This dealer acquired the car from a main dealer, as a trade in, and has been taxed with the new number plate etc, but with the V5 most likely sitting on the doorstep of the old owners house, whom I have been informed, has now moved. I completed extensive checks on the car, even phoned the main dealer and the DVLA, and the car appears to be given the all clear.
This is the problem, however. The dealer wants rid of the car for obvious reasons and I do not want to lose it, but I am reluctant to purchase the car without him first aquiring the V5 and signing it off to me. This could take up to 6 weeks. Any thoughts, my gut tells me to sit it out and let him do the leg work...or worse I end up on the losing side once taking the car off his hands? He has a deposit of £150, and I have a receipt of intended sale?
Much thanks,
Clach. Read more
Remember that all a V5 is the registered keeper - it means nothing about who owns the car. If the car is HPI clear and the stamped DVLA slip reasonably recent I really wouldn't worry about it.
Your proof of ownership is the invoice for the car (and likewise the dealer's proof of ownership is the invoice they paid). It is NOT the V5.
Personally, if the dealer and car seem legit I'd buy the car and just apply for a new V5. You'll have one in about 4 weeks. The reason the dealer did not apply for one themselves is that by doing so they'd add another owner onto the logbook (i.e. themselves) so prefers to register it directly into who ever they sell it to's name.
For the first time in years I drove into Lincoln on the A15, from Sleaford. As I drove North I saw at least a dozen sets of Gatso type road markings, in both lanes/directions, and some of them were numbered - numbers in the 40s. My camera warner gave no bleeps of any sort and there were no GATSOs present. However, coming back South some hours later there was a Lincs police camera van locate at one of the sites. Now, I thought scamera vans used radar and didn't need road markings. Was the van's presence by the markings a coincidence or is there some technique going on that I don't know about?

Hi
Been looking around for a family car with a budget of £2k.
I have looked at a Y reg Mondeo in the new shape priced at £1995. The vehicle has 103000 on the clock and has full service history - it seems perfect for us.
My question is , is this too good to be true?
The dealer has offered 6 months warranty and a service.

Heh... I assumed it was something special, and would probably resemble a cross between a designer corkscrew and something from Mr Spock's toolkit.
Clearly there's still a lot to be said for the 'gi' it some welly' school of auto maintenance, as demonstrated by the venerable Bodgitt & Scarper Ltd. :)
My Toledo (2002, nearly 70k miles, 1.9 TDI 110) keeps losing the turbo when I nail it - mostly when going up hill and only ever over 3000rpm, sometimes as high as 4000.
Of course, it's not every time, that would be too simple!
I have a VAG-COM cable arriving soon which should hopefully let me code read it.
I'm aware of some the common problems, just wondered if the uphill and over 3k revs would enable anyone to help me narrow the cause down.
Thanks.

Mate,
check you pipe work......espacially the one that goes from the turbo to the inlet manifold, that is the big plastic one, check the 2" hose that connects to the turbo to the plastic pipe..oftern they split but you need to wiggle it...if you just look or feel you can miss it.
If you get your VAG com I'm betting it will say your manifold press is abnormal.......
It could be the MAF sensor, everything on these cars talk to each other....try cleaning it first..but I'm still betting the hose issue....
also, not so common on the newer ones but (and this taken from the car by car breakdown) Power loss on TDI 90s and 110s over 3,000rpm can be cured by replacing a thin hose that runs from the exhaust, near the turbo, to the ECU

My flagellation days are long gone!
