Is it worth the effort?

I suppose if you really did want to keep one of these vehicles mobile, a diesel is the obvious choice - a well installed PSA HDi (with proper fuel filtration) would be my preference.

last time i saw a friend of mine from the berks & hants off-road club he was saying that a customer of his had got his hands on a toyota unit and wanted that fitted. 'lotus did it' he said and off he went. not spoke to him for a while but i will try to find out how he got on

Took my Fiat Ulysees 2.2 HDI 2003 (78,000) to a Peugeot dealer because it was making a strange noise, the mechanic told me it was the Turbo making the noise and that it needed replacing, asked him if it was OK to drive, he said yeah, not too fast, not too far come back tomorrow and we will have a replacement for you.
So I left the garage travelled about 1/2 mile was waiting at a junction, suddenly engine started to rev on its own, turned off but would not stop, lots of smoke and banging, stalled it and walked back to garage. They towed it in and then gave me an estimate for £6050 to repair it as the engine was completely destroyed and needed replacing, this was then upped by a further £1186 as the injectors were stuck in the head and could not be removed, this was then upped again when I was informed the intercooler and associated pipework was also damaged.
Now I have told the story, if you are not asleep, do you think I have any redress against the dealer, from what I have learnt since this happened I definitely would not have driven the car and I feel that the mechanic from whom I was seeking professional advice has been negligent in letting me drive off.

what do you all think, and what can I do about it??

Bad luck and sympathies etc.

Mechanic gave good advice imo, difficult to say how/when any major fail is likely to happen etc.

But as for Portugal on 11th July? I wouldn't even entertain it. Find another car I suggest.

There will be enough problems sourcing parts, fitting parts, replacing parts etc and then road testing car. What about running it in and an oil change and inspection after 500/1000 miles? If i was doing the work I would want chance to inspect it regularly for first 1000, 2000 and 3000 miles or offer no guarantees.

These very popular HDI engines are gaining a reputation for being able to do seriously high mileages.
Whats the highest mileage that anyone has seen on one of these engines please? Read more

270,000 miles is pretty impressive. Has it needed much apart from routine servicing?

I posted here a while ago about the earths being a problem on my car. Now I have another issue.

Drove 1.5 miles today to Asda. Did my weekly shop, loaded it in and went to reverse the car. Just kept lifting into the air. Hubby was shouting at me that I was trying to mount the kerb, I assured him I wasn't. He got out to "guide" me out of the parking space. Car wouldn't move.

We eventually realised the handbrake or something was stuck. Rang the AA. They eventually turned up 2.5 hours later - they couldn't find Asda in a town where there is only one Asda!!! LOL.

He drove the car back and realised that the back passenger side brakes had locked. He took the wheel off to try and release the brake disc etc, it had pretty much ceased on.

They eventually then (another 2 hours later) sent a tow truck and has dropped my car at the local garage.

What sort of cost am I looking at? I admit the brakes haven't been changed since I've owned the car (3 years) and my aunt who had the car from new can't remember when she last had them done.

It needs to be done but I wonder who much I'm going to have to wallop my credit card with ...... Read more

yes simon its a typical pewgot problem where the shoe material comes unglued
as for the cost? then the garage might have to smash the drum to get to the problem
new drum £30
shoes£20
wheel cylinder £15? might be ok
labour £70

assuming everything else is ok

98 Mondeo 2.0l petrol.
How much should it cost to replace the front shocks ?

One chain has quoted me about £120 plus vat. I think they were supplying Monroe brand.

Using this a guide I do not mind an independant getting the job but what is a reasonable price?
I rejected one quote of £300 which included 90min per side labour.

hm

mate,

£120 for both fully fitted? if that is the case I do not think that is too bad....on average it takes me 1hrs a side to do shocks....but they can be a right pain in the backside (getting the lower ball joints off etc)

you will be looking at £25/30 each for the shocks alone...

Personally, £120 plus VAT (£141 gross) is not too bad......

Model: 2005 Eleganza, recently bought thus secondhand

Centrally placed in the "ceiling" of the glove compartment there is a lengthways (in the direction of the car) roughly rectangular, slot. It is 4.5 inches long, and tapers from about 1.25 inches, to about 1.5 inches wide.

Perhaps the hole is there to allow access to the head of the screw one can see through it. Perhaps on some Pandas there is a light, though reaching round behind and above the glove compartment I can?t feel any stray wires or connectors.

Can a kind person from memory or examination of a Panda they have tell me whether there is usually just a hole? Or should there be a light unit? Or a panel that clips into the hole?

Many thanks

Not in my experience! I bought a 2 yr old RAV4 from a Toyota Main dealer in the Midlands. Four problems were encountered within 2 weeks which were resolved by my local dealer in Manchester. The rear seat tumble mechanisms did not work (replaced FOC); interference on the radio (fixed FOC); various electrical problems found to be caused by 3 faulty fuses (replaced at my cost £49); and the climate control needs repressurising (will cost me £69). My letter of complaint to the MD of the Midlands firm received no reply, follow-up email also no reply. Toyota Head office customer relations promised a response within 3 (then) 14 days but after 7 weeks they have confirmed that they cannot force the dealer to reply as they are not owned by Toyota. Fortunately I am enjoying driving the car. Read more

According to the sales rep in the
main dealer 'some' of the Yaris is made in France and I know that Toyota
collaborates with Peugeot/Citroen on the Aygo variants.

The whole Yaris is made in Valenciennes, north France. I'm not sure if this includes engines, but I believe so. There have been quality issues, mostly on component parts.

This is a link to a gallery showing a Chinese-designed car called the Brilliance BS6 undergoing the German ADAC crash test. I don't think they've thought it through:
