Having solved the problem of my Mondy's inactive temp gauge with a new sender unit I still have a problem with the fuel guage which is showing as full to the brim all the time whether ignition is on or off. I have located the fuel sender unit which has a multiplug connection plus an uninsulated spade connector around the outside of the unit. I tried cleaning up the spade connector which was heavily corroded but still no joy. Any ideas?
Also the car is a 1996 Ghia model so I would imagine it would have had remote central locking rather than key operated c/locking. Is there any way of telling and if it has r/c/l is it a case of parting with ££££££ to Ford for a blip-key-thingy?
Thanks,

Just had some of the stats come in and it makes some interesting reading.
On the eastern road, coming into the village from a 60 to 30 mph, 41% of cars were exceeding 36 mph and a massive 73.8% were breaking 36mph heading out of the village so all would have been fined if a camera had been sited there. Furthermore, 93% of drivers were exceeding the 30mph limit coming into the village although may not have been caught on a camera.
On the road past the primary school which is more important still, westbound 51% were exceeding 36 mph, eastbound 55%. This is past a school from which children have to cross the road from a blind bend, which is fine in the given length of road if the cars do the limit, dangerous if they dont.
How many were doing between 30 and 36 is yet to come in.
Since the road into my close is also on this blind bend, it also affects those of us who live here and have to try and pull out infront of speeding cars which all too often results in no car, pull out then your mirrors are filled with a car that just wasnt there seconds ago and has been the site of many near misses for many residents.
There is a campaign building for cameras in several sites despite the villages being relatively small on account of the utter disregard for the limits and the children going to school.
I think its astounding how little regard drivers seem to have for the circumstances on these roads.
There are many blind driveways that you have to nudge out into the road before people can see if its clear such is the age of the place aswell as the school.
Personally, id like to see hidden cameras - if you break the law, its willingly and if your willing to speed, your accepting the risk of getting caught! There really is no defense when driving past a school either.

I hate to be controversial but surely speeding stats are meaningless without accident stats, or information about why the speed limit was put in in the first place (eg due to accidents in the past). If people are speeding but there have been no accidents, then perhaps the limit is too low. If there have been accidents (which can reasonably be shown to have been caused by speed, eg not your dustbin lorry going over), then enforcement is needed. If there are still accidents with enforcement then the limit is too high and needs to turn into a 20.
I'm not trying to suggest there is no problem as clearly people shouldn't be speeding past a school during day time hours, and it does sound like you have a challenging pull out from your road. But for anyone (including the police) to make an informed decision about what needs doing, I would have thought accident stats are far more important than speeding stats.
In reality this kind of situation is a possible case for variable limits according to time of day. A school near where I used to live had flashing signs that they could turn on and off that turned the limit into a 20 at appropriate hours. If this was done, with enforcement of the 20 (but not necessarily the 30 out of hours) then perhaps this would reduce the perceived 'dangerous' speeding where people are risking hitting the kids, but allow people to continue as now at higher speeds out of hours, if they are not having or causing accidents.
Friend has above car - ABS "ring" on end of the driveshaft (front) has a crack in it but he has been told that it can't be replaced without replacing the whole driveshaft - about £300 for the part!
I told him that I thought I had read on here that the "ring" could be obtained separately, but I have done a forum search and can't find any reference to it.
Can someone enlighten me - is it all one bit and does it cost £300? - seems rather a lot. I think his Maverick is a 2002 model, 2 litre petrol.
Thanks

My 1998 1.4 has developed a squeak as the clutch pedal is depressed, not related to the engine running. It feels fine and is not slipping when driven. Its only really noticeable when stopped. Should I just ignore it?

Cheers, grease monkey, job done with a small mirror on a stick, small maglite torch and a can of m'cycle chain lube with a long bendy tube to avoid lubricating the entire clutch!
Guy at work is immigrating to oz has offered me has 2001 51 zafira 1.8 comfort, mot and taxed for 6 months with service history he says its in good shape but its green and done 115k he wants £2800 but i reckon he would take £2500. (It wouldn?t be doing many miles from now on approx 8k a year). I was looking at getting perhaps a newer 2.2 or 1.8 elegance is there much difference in spec, do you think this is a good deal.

(a car with wheel trims how quaint
Some of the Vauxhalls now have fake alloys that are actually wheel trims. (called "structure wheels"). Unless you look closely, you wouldn't spot the difference.
Hello all,
Immediately I'm sure seeing Renault Clio, and Alarm and problem, there must be the rolling of eyes somewhere, but still... I recently acquired an R Reg Renault Clio RXE, which has a standard fit immobiliser and alarm, and now on its first day of service, while travelling on a fast A road a mysterious beeping started and I noted an indicator light on - I presumed that I'd failed to cancel my turn signal when I'd come round a roundabout, but on turning off said A road matters got worse - the alarm went off, while I was in the car, while I was driving - clearly this is not a happy or particularly safe experience. I pulled over, turned the car off, withdrew the key and pointed it at the little remote locking and alarm receiver and pressed the plipper and the alarm switched off. I started off again and carried on driving, and no problem.
Naturally however, I wonder if this is a symptom of something more troublesome - the previous owner of the car, who I know to be trustworthy had not said that the car had any persistent faults. This time I was lucky, I was two hundred yards from a turn off the A road and was going past a layby when the alarm sounded.
So, story over I wonder:
* Is it "normal Clio behaviour" for the alarm to go off at random while the car was in motion? I mean, its been hot and I wonder if perhaps there was a circuit overheat?
* Should I worry that it will happen again? And if so, strand me somewhere?
* Should I go and speak to my friendly mechanic soon?
* If, heavens forbid, it does happen again somewhere where I cannot stop - is there something I can do? Or do I have to carry on driving looking like I've just stolen the vehicle?
Thank you for reading, and my thanks for any help anyone can offer.

im pretty confident that you have water ingress from the roof aerial into the immobilisor pickup,
drop down the circuit board and dry it out if not too contaminated and green......remove aerial and either replace with a new reno one £17 or give it a good dollop of silicone where it meets the roof
Does anyone knwo the reasoning behind only charge a toll on the M4 Severn Bridge going to Wales and not coming out of?
I can;t think whay it would be charged one way and not the other unless it's some sort of immigration control?

If we had a proper devolved government for England, as Scotland, Wales and Ireland have now, we could get our politicians to give us toll-free roads like they have in Scotland - without having to resort to civil unrest!
Hi All, I'm in awe of the wisdom here!
I hope someone can help because I?ve run out of knowledge! I've got an M10 engined 1776cc BMW E21(love it and the rust it came with for free) and have got a gremlin.
Since I bought it it's stuttered (loss of power) under moderate/ hard acceleration but I can get it to higher rpms (though not max) if I let the revs build gently (slamming my right foot down makes it stutter a hell of a lot and i slow down). I changed the distributor cap and plugs about a year ago I thought it was a carb or fuelling issue - recently bought a weber to fit.
Recently it stuttered much more than usual and I noticed that a spark from one of the ht leads on the distributor cap was arcing across to the metal surround of the cap. Took off ht lead to see the copper socket that goes onto the cap wrecked and with green residue on both it and in the cap (another was also a bit green). Replaced leads and it now runs much better but still the stuttering on moderate/ hard accel and I also noticed (in the dark) arcing again, but less so. I also noticed that the distributor cap has scoring in the plastic around the contact diametrically opposite to the one that?s arcing noticeably.
I?ve also noticed that the metal surround that goes over the distributor cap is a very tight fit/ doesn?t really fit and also stands prouder than the picture of it in my Haynes manual ? do you think it?s possible that this closeness (probably only 5mm) between the metal surround of the cap and the leads is leading to the bad running?
Any thoughts at all would be really appreciated ? I?m deeply confused?
Many thanks!
James

has the condensor that bridges the contacts in the points been checked, this is a very long shot but a very cheap solution if its found to be faulty, its there to prevent arcing when the points open and close
Our ´99 Astra has done just over 100k miles.
It´s got the 1.8 16V petrol engine.
Its cambelt and pulleys were changed at 62k, in Feb 2004.
Should I get the cambelt done now, or wait until it hits 120k?
Any advice gratefully received.

Not read thriough all the info yet, but just had long awaited literature from Citi, who will be operating the Shell Credit Card from July.
Briefly...
3% cashback on Shell fuel purchases (max £5000 per year) so not as good as it might be for business use, but fair for ordinarry customers.
1% on other purchases
extended warranty on DOMESTIC appliances - not sure if it's just washing machines etc, or tv's & cameras, sat nav & stuff)
price drop refund - if what you buy gets cheaper, for short period after purchase.
So looks an OK card, if you settle bill every month - certainly better than previous reward of Shellpoints.
Don't like the 0870 number for contact so 0800 130035 is from www.saynoto0870.com

Sometimes the float that works the solenoid on the sensor gets stuck. If you can't easily get into the tank where the sender is, you could - at your own risk of course - try driving very fast over some enormous bumps... might shake it loose, you never know.
NB: this is not serious advice. Still, if yoiur car never does anything but glide, try some potholes or speed bumps.
