Can I have your opinions please, when the turbo bearings fail on one of these engines, what is the likelihood of the engine being totally destroyed, in a scale of 1 -10. 1 being unlikely and 10 being almost certain.

Does any engine survive after running on its own oil?

Dear Forum,
I have an Holden Astra 1998 1.8 GL, Auto, (1997 twin cam engine fitted). I have a couple of issues with cold running which I would like to solve. I wanted to start by obtaining the correct wiring diagrams for this model. As you can see its called a Holden, becaurse I'm in Australia, but don't think it's any different to the UK, or Euro models. Can anyone help?? Willing to pay.

Having taken a trip to Ascot Ladies Day, we were amazed at the array of unbelievable stretched stretch limos, stretched Ford 4x4s (!) etc. - many so tastefully decked out in pink. Anyone wanting to check on these vehicles would probably have been able to see every one in the UK that day as they appeared to come from everywhere from Cornwall to Newcastle and filled almost an entire carpark (8), plus overspill into 7.
What was more fascinating was the three hours - yes three hours - we spent among them to get from the M3 to racecourse (no parade or first race for us :~{ ) via a route posted to take you away from Ascot. I would not be the driver of one of these for any money having seen the passengers and their condition - which enforced them to take 'comfort trips' into the brambles, both females and males, repeatedly. We saw two 'broken down' where the passengers had decided to walk (stagger?) the rest of the way. We suspected the drivers had faked the breakdown to decant the occupants. As this was before they got to the event, heaven knows what condition they were in on the return journey.

Got TomTom 710 Free with my new Seat. All set up and working fine.

With this, comes one free month of TomTom Traffic. To make this work you need to use a GPRS type phone whicjh I have (Nokia 6230)

So have went through the process and it seems to be working fine, however the little capital G on my phone is permanently showing which usually means I am connected to GPRS services.

But I know this browsing costs me.

Does it need to be permanently connected whilst using the TomTom traffic or should it only connect when you press the TT Traffic button to get an update and then disconnect again?

I am going to be driving from Glasgow to Normandy next week and this free trial might be handy, but I don't want an astronomical phone bill!

Any one already got this? Read more

Does the TT Go 710 support the TMC aerial out of interest? If it did then one payout on the antenna means you get updates via TMC radio signals and that payout lasts forever. No more GPRS.

Hired this recently in Germany, brand new car. Felt like no power steering, which was a blessing because it really goes where you point it. Perky in town, even though the engine was not run in. On the Autobahn, a 6th gear wouldn't have gone a miss. In comparison the new Opel Corsa feels bigger, more confort, but much more gutless with the 1.2 engine. Also with the Fiesta I liked the non-colour coded, non-electric mirrors. Didn't like the relatively hefty shove required on the brakes, but even that was a source of nostalgia. Think of it as like a new mobile phone, which is designed to allow you to make phone calls, rather than a million other features you can never hope to understand or use.

No idea how many horses are put out by the 1.3Endura, but I would wager it is better than the new Ford engines are using to replace it. Read more

I would expect so I only say it didn't feel like it - and felt
a lot more kartish because of it.

Ford are one of the few mass manufacturers who can do power steering properly, and the Fiesta's is particularly good. They seem to comprehend that fingertip lightness isn't required once on the move, and that total isolation from the road is an unwelcome feature.

Peugeot used to be even better at it, but those days are long gone.

My ABS light is permanently on. My husband has replaced the rear pads which I needed and discovered the sensor has snapped on the rear driver's side. He is going to replace it. I have been told previously though that the only way to get the light to turn off is by going to a Citroen garage as a special tool is required. Is this right? if not will the light just turn off when the sensor is replaced or is there anywhere I can get a tool to turn this off myself? I need this for the MOT next week & don't want to pay over the odds if possible just for turning a light off.
thanks, Sam

AFAIK the light will go out once the fault is rectified. Do not assume that the rear sensor is the only fault though....

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

Just come into some cash and am seriously thinking of giving up my cherished Civic Aerodeck for the new Honda CRV.
Not had a chance to look at them in the flesh yet but am impressed from what I have saw so far on the net. It will have to be the EX model as I can not live without a chunk of glass above my head and of course will be the diesel version.
Any owners here with positive or negative experiences to share ?.

Although £7k off list, the list is irrelevant cos if you sell it tomorrow, you will get less than what you paid for it.

I so badly wanted an old style CRV, did all my research, posted a few threads on here about specifics, but when I came to actually take a test drive in it I just found it so disappointing. The steering felt very wallowy, the dash looked so dated, the radio didn't even display the station name and there was a big compartment in the dash for chilling cans. I don't chill cans! This was the Sport spec so middle spec. It didn't have variable intermittant wipe either and I wasn't fully convinced about the shape or positioning of the handbrake.

But externally, I thought it looked great, nice and chunky and commanding on the road.

Hi Guys

Sorry for being greedy but didn't want ot waste the posts!

1st question, i was round my olds today and my moms MG TF when started made a clicking noise then all the exhaust gas came out the left side exhaust, it seems there is a block on the right one which is controlled from somewhere, she said in the winter the "smoke" only comes out the right one, is this a potential fault or something simple??

2nd question, I'm trying to fox all the things wrong on my money pit proton coupe, i'm trying to locate the horn, it doesnt work and i have checked the fuse and all looks ok, was going to see i the wire had come off or something, and guide on where it is or what might be the fault are appreciated.

Thanks again

whereabouts is the clicking coming from ie top of engine or lower down, some of the suffer from piston slap untill engine warm so possibly its that.

As for smoke, its steam which is probably just water in the exhaust evaporating, but keep an eye on coolant level in case its something more.

Horn, check the earth through the actual switch it may be that its not getting a good earth

Hi Folks,

I just want to share, quickly, my adventures with my Pug 206 1.9 dlx, that i purchased exactly 4 years ago. You are unlikely to remember, but I have used this board for advice and to vent my frustrations over this car for some time. Well, anyway, you will be glad to know that I have had enough, and plan to sell the 'clown car' to whom ever dares purchase it! But before I do, I just want to say that as a I gathered up my 4 years worth of receipts from the dealer, and i could not help but total them all up:

The results: Purchased on 24/06/03 for £6990

Maintenance Receipts total: £6012

Incredible....and shameful at the same time!

Thanks for listening..

Craig
Ps I simply could not afford to get rid of it before, but I should have! Read more

Further News: on one of my last journey's home in the aforementioned car last night, and an new' rattling' noise is starting to appear from the passenger side front wheel.....like I said, not very bolted together this one and even tougher to try and sell on now!?

Anyone know how I can sell a car worth (apparently) 2K quickly?

Hi all!

We have a P-reg Rover 214 (P) whose coolant tank has mysteriously run dry - no signs of any leaks and only topped up with water 2 weeks ago.........then whilst being driven last week emitted a nasty strong odour and started 'bubbling' under the bonnet. After allowing it to cool down I discovered a thick brown gunky mess in the coolant reservoir tank. Spoke to our trust mechanic who diagnoses gunk as combination of water and oil, and suspects either head gasket or cylinder head problems - minimum costs £500, maximum £800 depending upon severity of problem.

Have heard that this is an inherent problem with Rovers which did not result in a manufacturer recall as Rover denied that any inherent fault existed!!

Bottom line is - we only paid £800 for the car 15 mths ago from the dealership (approx 60K miles on the clock), so reluctant to throw good money after bad!!

Can anyone please offer any words of wisdom for our predicament?

It has been suggested that it might be prudent to try selling the car for spares now that Rover are effectively no more.

A suggested price of asking around £500 for it on eBay?

Any other reliable sources of where to sell (in West Suffolk area preferably) to get a half decent price would be very welcome.

Many thanks! Read more

I used to run a large engine test facility at the time the K-series was being developed. I knew quite a few of the Rover Group engine development engineers at that time, although admittedly on other (bigger) jobs.

I don't wish to sound unreasonably harsh, but they were clueless. The K-series was very much a copy of the aluminium block wet liner PSA engines, only Rover had no idea of tolerancing, thermal cycling requirements, sludge allowance etc. etc. that any well respected engine designer would know all about. The icing on the cake was that the factory were not always willing to work to the specified tolerances, let alone those needed to make this "floppy liner" design work.

Obviously, I used to talk to engine designers from other companies - the difference was significant. Rover RIP.
