Is it possible to replace the big end bearing shells on a VW Mk4 1400cc from below without engine removal? Read more

Collos25

Look underneath if you can drop the sump then you can change the bearings but I doubt it.

The nice people at Chrysler have now equipped the most recent versions of the 300C with a piece of software which automatically records your best 0-62 mph time in the cars computer.

Naturally I couldn't possibly condone anyone trying to 'beat the clock' on a public road, but to date, for a big lad, the car certainly shifts (in CRD, V8 Hemi & SRT8 guises).

Three cheers to Chrysler for adding a piece of kit (free of charge) that gives the driver sooooooooooooo much pleasure and will also boost the sales of Pirelli P7 tyres in Britain.

hi, would the fuel pump off a 1991 2.1td xm fit and run correclty on a r reg citroen xantia 2.1td?

Possibly... this car (ebay?) was discussed on the French Car Forum. The Xantia uses a Lucas EPIC ECU controlled pump, whereas the XM will be a mechanical pump - possibly a Bosch. You would need the pump, pipes and injectiors. Not sure the engine front plate would be the same if the pump type changed. You'd probably have trouble rigging a cold start, but could just set the pump to cold start position, and live with the 1000 rpm hot idle (like most older XUDs do anyway...!)

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

Hello,

Can somebody tell me the locations of the switches that bring this warning light on. I appear to have found a number of possibilities but none have solved my fault - it still indicates a door open.

I have checked the sprung switches at the hinge side of the front doors - all appears okay.

The sliding doors appear to have 2 of these sprung switches and a pair of contact plates on each door which I am unsure what they do and I have been told that the switch for these doors to show closed is a small microswitch actually at the catch plate on the main body of the vehicle.

Then I come to the tail gate which I am having trouble opening as the central locking doesn't want to open it and the previous owner had lost the key? . ? !

The possibilites for the cause are not endless - either a switch, wiring or software fault on the electrical side or a mechanical misfunction in the closure mechanism. The switch will have to be either in the door well or in the closure mechanism, usually the former in order to avoid the necessity of cabling across the door hinge. Switches can either be mecanical, magnetic, optical or rf(induction). Costs usually lead to the use of a mechanical switch but there may be some reason for a sliding door to have a different arrangement. If I were desiging, I think a microswitch in the door runner would be my solution.

I use ready diluted Halfords screenwash and have recently fitted new (Bosch) wiper blades. The screen is still streaky. Any ideas ? Thanks in advance.

A colleague is currently looking at changing his car and is interested in a Golf GTI or A3 S line. I have given him the usual advice of look at SEAT or Skoda as they are essentially the same car.
What struck me though when looking at his brochures and prices lists is that if you have a DSG gearbox in VW or Audi it is approx £1300 but if you spec into on the same engine on a SEAT it is at least £400 cheaper.
Even after cutting through all the badge value debate, how on earth can this be justified. These engines and transmissions are sourced from the same companies and built in the same factories before being shipped to which ever car company is installing them, so there cannot be any logistical/manufacturing reason for the difference.
Surley this is just VW ripping people off ?

Having said that they are great gearboxes and the Golf GTI is a cracking car but come on ? Read more

I have to go down on the side of "moron"Audi customers here, if I had ample money I wouldn't look twice at a Skoda when I could get something just that little bit better.

I don't feel special when I get value for money, I feel special when i get something nice. :-)

I have just opened a MK IV Golf with the plastic key and started the engine. Surely the immobiliser should have kicked in. The Alarm was set using the Fob and the Led was flasking to say it was set but the plastic key unset it. Any Ideas. Regards Peter Read more

Hi,

I think the plastic key has the transponder in it as well so it should start the car.

I'm close to buying a new car that has a CO2 output of 219g/KG, putting it in group F (£190). This is the same as my current Vectra. I started thinking that there is a likelihood of new tax rates soon and we all know that they're only going to go up. (Apart from the mythical H20 powered cars that apparently exist!!)

I'm a little concerned that an output of 219g/kg might be heavily penalised when Brown decides that I'm single handedly responsible for the end of the world. Any inside info floating around? Read more

And £500 might not be a significant amount to you....but
it bloomin well is to me!

I did not say that £500 is insignificant to me.

I said that these amounts are comparatively insignificant compared to the depreciation that the new owner of an expensive car is going to suffer.

BTW, I am yet to buy a brand new car.

Ford dealer has quoted me £300 for the above - this seems rather steep ! Presuming a cambelt for a Ford Focus is pretty cheap, how long is the labour - I would think 2 hours would cover it ? Read more

Peter

I recently had the cambelt and fuel pump belts changed on my Rover 420 SLDi, cost £207.00 inc vat. This was through Nationwide AutoCentre, local garages quoted ~ £350.00. They did say that if the tensioner needed changing that would be an extra £50.00. You could discuss the matter with them.

Hi,

I own a 95 Ford Mondeo 1.8lx with 105k on the clock. i have recently been experiencing an intermittent but harsh vibration at speeds of anywhere over 50mph which are only present under load. as soon as i lift off the throttle it disappears. it is intermittent and can run for several miles on the motorway with no sign of the problem but then it gradually reappears. there is no loss of power - only an increase in the vibration when i apply the accelerator. the problem is not evident at lower speeds and happens at high revs 3rd gear, 4th and 5th gears - presumably because i get to a high enough speed? i have changed the plugs and had an automotive engineer friend of mine to check it over to which there is nothing obviously wrong with it.

Does anyone have any ideas of what could be causing it or things i could get checked out?

Many thanks
