I'm contemplating buying a 306 diesel (currently have a 106 diesel). The D Turbo model is the highest spec. I know how it has sports seats and slightly more bhp, but how else does it differ from the other turbo diesel models? Read more

Martin1981

The D Turbo spec is exactly the same as the XSi spec i.e. lower suspension, alloys, sports seats, front fogs and the like and are mainly 3 door models, but obviously with the 1.9TD XUD engine. The D Turbo is certainly no different in terms of performance to the XLdt, XRdt etc as the 1.9TD is only available in 92bhp form but is usually more expensive to buy. The HDi common rail diesel is only available in 90bhp form also and performance is pretty similar to the 1.9TD, but with better fuel economy.

Are they really, or is this poor reporting and the start of an urban myth ?

Question LPG Escort
JustMike

Hello silver-haired surfers and those not yet so old.

This winter has made me more like Victor Meldrew than I would like but at least I can now look at the arrival of crocussses and daffodils despite or maybe because of global warming and reassure myself that our political masters are striving to improve things for all of us !

Meanwhile in the real world I have a 51 Escort van with an LPG conversion which doesnt want to switch over to gas. It has 100K , runs perfectly well on petrol but cuts out when switched over even though the gas tank is full.

I suspect its a solenoid/filter problem but before I dig too deeply under the bonnet I wonder if anybody can suggest anything which will save me time.

I like to listen to a "man who can "

Thanks for applying your grey matter.

I would humbly suggest you take it to a specialised gas company onlyyby looking at it will the problem be found ,it does indeed sound like the changeover switch is not working but there could be lots of reasons for that.

Question golf gti mk2

Hi all,,,I have recently bought a 1991 Golf gti,it had a leaky roof but got that sorted (thanks to all who helped me out on that),,,but now getting a bit ambitious,,,,,,,,,,,,,wait for it.................
Its simple really I want to go faster without breaking the bank or having to head hunt VW"s top engineer from the fatherland,,,
Was thinking more in the line of something I could do myself,,,eg.buy a few bits off tinternet and bolt them in,,
It already has a power flow exhaust, but everything else is standard,,,,would the fuel/air need setting up for the exhaust like a bike does when you get a race can?ie, free flow air filter,,,
also would a faster cam be a help or a combination of a few things give her a bit more steam?
any help or links would be great,,,,,,,Many thanks.....James. Read more

Hi,

I saw a recon engine and gearbox for my fiat ducato 2.5 diesel engine. The engine is a 2.0 litre petrol. The van has a 2.5 litre diesel fitted. Unfortunately I was outbid by 6 seconds. However I did end up with the gearbox.
Please could you tell me would it be possible the gearbox would fit my engine or are there different type like the clutches?

Thanks.

Mike.

1998 1.8 mondeo. when firing central locking, all doors open apart from front passenger side. when trying to lock car, no doors lock unless using key in lock on passenger door. the problem is not constant and sometimes the central locking does function correctly, but when it goes wrong it is always the front passenger door that plays up. Unfortunately I couldn't work out how to take off the door inner panel - hence the liberal spraying of WD40. It's possible that my lock was just starting to sieze and I just caught it before any force became necessary.

A recent thread reminded me of this one.

Does anyone know where Hyundai/Kia got their diesel designs from?

Obviously their petrols are essentially Mitsubishi designs (which have diverged from Mitsi over the last 10 or so years but are still similar). I'm aware that the latest GM-Suzuki-Fiat diesels are cam-chain, as are the Hyundai-Kia ones, and seem to recall someone suggesting that the Korean lumps are the same as, or based upon, the GM units.

Is there any truth in this, or does anyone know where Hyundai got the designs from? Entirely possible that Hyundai did their own engines (after all their main experience is in building heavy machinery which is diesel-based), but I haven't been able to uncover any definite info. Read more

carl_a

Most engines seem to have many parts designed by specialist companies, as they (Hyundai) had little experience a few years they must have had a lot of help from the outside. According to this
eng.kia.sk/news/index.php?news&&data_id=69
they design them in Korea with input from an R&D department in Germany.

A friend and work collegue of mine has been offered a large discount off a Nissan X Trail that is is advertised as `Eupopean Union Import`.
Am I right in thinking there are insurance and re-sale implications to buying one of these, and probably the instruments would read in KPH rather than MPH.
He does not keep his vehicles for more than two to three years,so re-sale value is important to him.
Any advice and information regarding this matter would be helpful.
Thanks in advance. Read more

I have bought three Cyprus import Hondas from Bob Gerard Ltd - all had 'normal' mph speedos - I think Cyprus uses miles anyway, which might be the explanation.

According to the website, Gerard's will sell you an Aventura for about £17,900 OTR. All they require is a modest deposit by credit card (which gives you some protection anyway) and payment by debit card on collection, which might be a consideration if your friend has concerns about the vendor.

As to resale value, I was told by the Honda agent when I last changed that I would have been offered £1,000 more had my CR-V, then three years old, been a UK supplied one. As I had saved about double that on purchase I was not unhappy. Cyprus is now in the EU so you now get a manufacturer warranty, though not necessarily the same as the UK one.
