A recent thread reminded me of this one.
Does anyone know where Hyundai/Kia got their diesel designs from?
Obviously their petrols are essentially Mitsubishi designs (which have diverged from Mitsi over the last 10 or so years but are still similar). I'm aware that the latest GM-Suzuki-Fiat diesels are cam-chain, as are the Hyundai-Kia ones, and seem to recall someone suggesting that the Korean lumps are the same as, or based upon, the GM units.
Is there any truth in this, or does anyone know where Hyundai got the designs from? Entirely possible that Hyundai did their own engines (after all their main experience is in building heavy machinery which is diesel-based), but I haven't been able to uncover any definite info.

Jase, I think the Hyundai/Kia units are 2.0 litre ones, whereas the GM/Fiat design is a 1.9 unit. Probably not then.

I think I read somewhere they were Mitsubishi based

The chain drive Fiat/Gm/Suzuki is the 1.3, the 1.9s are on belts.

Would you give a 7 years warranty to anything designed by GM/Fiat?

In my experience Fiat diesels are some of the best in the business.
Fiat/Alfa designed Common Rail. And nearly everyone else uses it.;-)

The body of the Hyundai terracan seems to be a development of the Mk2 Mitsubishi Shogun, but not sure about the engine.

According to their website, in 2003 they developed:
....Independently developed 1.5~2.0-liter D engines...
I´ve emailed them to see if they confirm they are their own designs.

The Hyundai group Diesels were developed in collaboration with VM Diesel Mottori (spelling?) of Italy.

Thanks for the clarification -- I knew there was some sort of Italian connection ;)
Same company who have designed engines for London Taxis, LDV and Chrysler-Jeep.
What interests me is that for all there have been issues with CR diesels, nothing ever seems to have been said about the Hyundai ones. VM seem to have some pedigree as well.

Most engines seem to have many parts designed by specialist companies, as they (Hyundai) had little experience a few years they must have had a lot of help from the outside. According to this
eng.kia.sk/news/index.php?news&&data_id=69
they design them in Korea with input from an R&D department in Germany.
