hi all,
i've had a recent problem with my polo. at first when driving for distances, as i slow down for a junction then dip the clutch the engine would start to die then finaly cut out. i had to be very quick on the clutch to bump it again without stoping. this went on for a week or so and i wasnt impressed as i do alot of milage. this problen shortly sorted itself out and the engine purred like a dream.
after a month or so, the problem arrised again and eventualy the engine stopped all together, it will turn over but it wont fire. ive checked the fuel line and theres fuel getting as far as the single point injection unit. after there theres nothing at all. could it be the 's.p.i' or something to do with the 'e.c.u'? or could it be the battery? i would be very thankfull if any one could help or advise me on this matter as my legs are realy hurting from having to walk everywhere.
thankyou.

hi can fellow back roomers tell me if the 02 plate mondeo still suffer from ford's bad design of filter cowl cover.
sister has just bought the mondeo and i promised to check if this was still the case, i had i quick look at the car in darkness and could feel a gap of about 5mm between the cover and the base of the windscreen.
thanks in advance Read more
On way home from the weekly shop yesterday, passed through some speed humps, and noticed a knock at the rear of the car. Thinking "Oh damn my exhaust hanger has come off again" I carried on for home trying to ignore it!
Hubby had a look when I got home and to our shock (excuse the pun!) the rear damper has pulled out of its lower joint. Not sure if the bush has failed and fallen out, or the thread itself has snapped, but the end of the shock is just waving around.
Anyway, off to the garage tomorrow to book in, but just wonder how safe it is to drive? Have to drop my son at school about a mile in one direct, then go to garage a mile the other. Then obviously school run again in the afternoon, plus the same for how ever many days before garage can fit in (although they are usually pretty quick so hoping for Tues/Wed at latest).
Any advice please?
Thanks, L Read more
Thanks for that. Garage said virtually same thing, so I'll take it easy. Booked in for work to be done on Wednesday.
Thanks again
As the title says really.

Hi All,
A few quieries on diesels i would be interested to know your thought on
1/ I know i may be opening a can of worms here but id be interested to know peoples opinions on a fairlt typical / reasonable life of a modern diesel engine. ??
I have heard of more conventional diesels - pre common rails- doing 3-400k ( peug, citroen and renault laguna) but id be interested to what sort of milage a new style - eg common rail- diesel engine would last for before major engine trouble
2/ Do likes of fuel pump, turbo, injector, head gasket failure usually happen on a diesel engine before main engine wear?
3/ Has the vast increase in power output on modern diesels had a detrimaental effect on diesel engine life??(
3/I have heard that the pressure in common rails engines is around 18000 psi how does that compare with the pressure in a conventional diesel engine.??
Regards
Andy

I have been running Citroen/Peugeot diesels for the last 30 years and my experience with them is that they seem to last forever, I had a couple of XMs that did 300k and Peugeot 2.0. 8 valve engines in 406's that just dont wear out, I had to scrap one at 246k but that was because of an immobilser fault due to dampness and this still had the original DMF and clutch..
These engines were only made until 04 so I don't have any experience of newer one. the 1.6 does seem to have problems mainly down to the ridiculously long oil change intervals but the 2.0. 16v seem to be OK....
Hi I normaly leave my brakes off when garaging the car after washing to prevent them sticking.
The last time I washed the car I forgot to leave them off, the car was in the garage for 3 days and when I tried to move the car they were well and truly stuck, I had to ease the clutch out 3 times before the brakes released themselves with a loud noise.
Is this normal on my Civic Aerodeck discs all round.
Is it possible to cause any damage?.

Because my car sometimes sits in the garage for a few days at a time, I often do a bit of left foot braking when arriving home if it's been 'precipitating' down, in the hope of heating the disks up and driving the damp off.
Hi everyone ,new here and need your help/advice please help if you can ,thank you
I have a Astra 1.6 mark4,the temperature guage never moves .........unless I put the air/con on for a second then off again..................then the guage moves up to just off the bottom marker ,nothing more
The engine is getting hot though as the heater is working very well
please advice,surely this isn't normal?
I don't do long distances (maybe 15/20 miles) but as I say the engine does get hot,...............how come it's not registering ,do I have a fault /problem ?

Taking a Vauxhall petrol gauge for example, the needle can physically go beyond the full marking on the scale before it hits a physical stop, and this is what you would get if you short the sensor lead directly to earth.
Using the 100 Ohm resistor, should put the needle exactly at the full marking on the scale.
I suppose that for many meters, the physical stop is at full scale, and so, full scale deflection and hitting the stop is one and the same needle position.

No, I've not gone insane, and please no-one crow on about massive fuel bills etc.etc. However, anyone got any rational thoughts on which of the above they'd go for?
4.4litre 840i coming in at £7000 and mega mile XK8 about £8500. I fancy the 840 as a big car for not alot of cash. Anyone driven one and have any views? Avoiding the 4.0 litre due to Nikasil problem. Will most likely get an RAC warranty or the like to be on the safe side also.
Honest thoughts, good/bad very welcome.

Ditto that, I got given a lift in the back of an XK8 when I was 16 (I'm 5 foot 6 now, fully grown!!) , 2 miles home from the station by my mate's mum. I was impressed when I first saw the car, but not when I got out 5 minutes later and could barely stand through cramp.
I just watched the original 1974 version of this film...if you haven't seen it already, do so!
It doesn't new music, the noise of that V8 is heaven... Read more
Hence the spate of Ford radio thefts because someone said the chips inside could be used to receive free cable / satellite.
