Streaky windscreen - lakelad
I use ready diluted Halfords screenwash and have recently fitted new (Bosch) wiper blades. The screen is still streaky. Any ideas ? Thanks in advance.

If you pour water over the windscreen does it sheet, or bead and run off in rivlets, if the latter, it could be coated with wax such as that found in jet washes and carwashes.

If you see the screen surface is peppered with sugar-like chips when driving into a low sun, get a new windscreen, as these seem to stop the squeegeing effect working properly.

Also, check that the wiper blade is perpendicular to the glass, sometimes the wiper arms get twisted along their length slightly.

There may possibly be some manufacturing residue on the new blades. I clean mine with neat, Super-Concentrated screenwash from Halfords - just put a little on a cloth and wipe it firmly along the rubbers. It helps to lubricate as well as cleaning them, It might be a good way of cleaning wax residues from the glass too.

Decosol screenwash was my answer to same problem. Had a very streaky screen recently, tried various screen washes and Autotglym screen clean - still streaky. Decosol cleared it.

Use a weak solution of washing up fluid; be economical and don't slosh it around. Wipe it all off with a clean wet cloth, water only. Finish off the wash with a wet newspaper and then dry it with a wadded newspaper. Always finish off with vertical strokes, never slanting or horizontal. This works for both inside and outside. I read that one of the ingredients of the ink does the job.

Never get polish on the windscreen, it smears very badly and it's difficult to get it off.

Vinegar - job done!

Clearalex washer additive (which I think is made by the aforementioned Decosol). You will never have to clean the windscreen again. Ever. I have no idea what is in it, but it is unsurpassed (although, I couldn't get any for a while, and found that about 25cc of Kitchen Power added to the water had a similar effect!). I got 30 sachets from ebay for about £5, but recent items seem to have been a lot more expensive.

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

Buy some genuine wiper blades from your nearest franchised dealer (which will probably be just as cheap as Bosch) and use Halfords Screen Wash concentrate diluted to taste.

To summarise the above inputs, earlier discussions have suggested vinegar and newspaper for the cleaning. The above user comments re brands of screenwash are useful. Have I read about a VW dealer supplied screenwash being very good?

Thanks to everybody for some very helpful suggestions - I should manage to get it sorted.

I don't think there was any such thing as washing up liquid when my Grandma was alive!

when printers ink was solvent based then yes that was the case.

In order to be recyclable and envrinmentaly friendly newspaper inks are now water based.

Further to the above, one of the best tips for getting rid of this streakiness (which is usually unburnt diesel fuel blown out of vehicle exhausts), is to get a handfull of clean old newspaper, dampen VERY slightly and give the screen a good hard rub over until you see the smears dissapear, changing the newspaper as it gets 'exhausted'. This takes a bit of elbow grease but does work brilliantly.

Yes, but think of all those scratches you'll get instead, unless you have been scrupulous in eliminating any gritty particles, by first hosing down the windscreen to within an inch of its life. I wouldn't dream of of rubbing my windscreen with damp newspaper - house windows, maybe!

Last winter I, too, suffered from the Streaky Window Syndrome. A bucket of tepid water over the car to melt the ice was followed by endless wiping to get rid of the streaks. Last spring I bought an unusual house accessory - a Water Softener. Now the bucket of tepid water leaves the glass sparkling and the windsreen washer now washes the windscreen instead of merely rearranging the streaks. There many domestic advantages as well but I am still amazed by the effect on a cold car.

I find it excellent - last time I bought some it was actually very cheap - not the usual word to appear in the same sentence as "VW dealer".
