Sounds rather like a sensor problem.
Not sure if your motor has a cam sensor but if it does then I would try and swap for a known good one prior to take to main dealer for replacement.

We've noticed, over the past few days, that the range of the remote (radio) locking key to SWMBO'S Focus seems to be getting much reduced. As the car is coming up to 5 years old, we suspect that the battery in the key is dying.

Instructions in the manual seem very straightforward for changing the battery, but can anyone tell me if there any additional things to watch out for - for example, in some cars you have to change the battery within "x" seconds otherwise the code is lost.

Would 5 years be fairly typical for the life of one of these batteries?

Thanks Waino Read more

I would love to see anything other than a wireless RCL system... ;o)>>

What a silly billy - I think I meant 'radio'.

The mind boggles at the alternative :-0

My mother has had a small 'bump' in her KA. The bonnet is dented, but not badly in my opinion. The paint has cracked as well.

Her excess is £150 - without pricing up the job properly I estimate the cost to be in the region of £150-£200 if a new bonnet is needed.

I had an idea that she might be able to get a second hand bonnet in the right colour from a scrapper. Is this is feasible idea or a non-starter? Also can any one recommend good scrap/salvage yards that might be able to supply a second hand bonnet in good nick?

The original bonnet might be salvagable but I tend to shy away from repairs involving filler as I always worry about it coming out! I am sure a professional would tell me not to worry.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Read more

Just be aware if you don't have no claims protection your premium may go up.

You could sand the paint down, prime and respray it, you may not get it to look perfect but it will stop the rust.

Please can you assist me with my Golf. When I use the remote control it only opens the drivers door and not any of the other doors as it always has in the past when you push more than once. I have tried both the remotes. I therefore have to open the drivers door and then open from the central locking button in the drivers door which works fine.

>>I hope they have done a better job of drafting their insurance contracts.

They are a broker, not an insurer.

At least they're upfront about their charges; which I copy here for you all to consider and remember that your own broker will almost certainly be charging similar amounts, and these are over and above what your insurer charges.

Policy Issue £30
Duplicate Documents £15
Policy Amendment £25*
Temporary Amendment £15 per week
Cancellation Processing Charge £50

Insofar as the faq is concerned, it was reasonably good if a little simplistic. Good introduction to insurance but not something one wshould make complex or important decisions upon. However, your average drvier could do a lot worse than to read and remember it.

My Fiat Marea Weekend 2.4TD has now covered 93,000 miles and the injector light had been coming on from start up for about 2 miles. My local garage were unable to do the work, but recommended Kent Diesel Centre in Maidstone. They removed the injectors (5 cylinders) and fitted new nozzles, checked the cylinder compression (now at 350 compared to a new figure of 400), checked the boost pressure on the turbo and road tested the car - all for £360. It sounds a lot of money, but in reality it has reinvigorated the engine. The engine starts easier, accelerates quicker, seems more powerful and, most surprisingly, it runs much quieter loosing most of the low rev agricultural clatter.

The recommended period for servicing of injectors is 80,000 miles and I had been pushing it. Now I regret not getting the work done earlier. So if you have a higher mileage diesel car, do get your injectors serviced as they will make a huge difference to the engine.

I was told that the spray pattern was not being correctly formed and droplets were trying to be ignited instead. I should also look forward to an increase in mpg as well, so may be not so expensive after all.

>>Were these Bosch nozzles? I'm very surprised that any attention was needed at this low mileage assuming that good quality fuel injection equipment was fitted and that other parameters such as injection timing were correct. On a good installation, I would not consider pulling the injectors at under 150k miles and then only if there were rough running, smoke, poor starting or fuel economy. I have seen many Bosch equipped engines with upwards of 250k miles with undisturbed injectors.

Yes, these are Bosch injectors. I should mention I usually use Esso diesel and occassionally supermarket diesel, but I tend to do a fair number of short journeys. Every four thousand miles I also used an injector cleaner.

According to the service manual they should be fitted with new nozzles at 80,000 miles. I do not doubt that some vehicles can reach higher mileages before any work is carried out. The receptionist at Kent Diesel Centre said many vehicles are left too long (mainly taxis) and when they are finally serviced, the nozzles have been giving a very bad spray pattern for thousands of miles resulting in poor performance, increased smoke and increased fuel consumption.

I should point out that the warning light for the injectors had been coming on during the first couple of miles, until the engine was warm, for several thousand miles. So the injector warning sensor was detecting a problem that required attention.

Never having had a diesel car before, let alone one of this high mileage, fitting new nozzles was an experience never before tried so I did not expect much difference with the engine. Never in 35 years of driving have I found such a marked performance change due to a regular service item - only if the car was running badly off tune has a service done this. The only way I can describe this is like having a replacement engine fitted, so I am very pleased I had the work done.

Do any other BR's have similar experiences or comments.

Hi

2003 multplexed Pug 206 GLX with twin front airbags, a mate of mine has an 2004 Pug 206 XSI with the sports interior & he is getting the half leather GTI interior from another mate to fit in to his XSI ( who is in turn getting the GTI 180 interior for his 206 ) still following this so far?

Ive been offered first refusal on the XSI interior at a very good price, question I am asking is the XSI interior has side airbags in the seats whereas my GLX doesn't.

Ive already checked the SRS wiring loom on my car & its there up until the middle of each sill, So in theory if I fitted the XSI seats & got the 2 short pieces of loom to connect to my cars original loom that would connect them up, I also need the BSI configuration set up adjusted but I would also need to change the airbag control unit under the front ashtray, now there's a few for sale on a certain auction website, ive asked the sellers if they are suitable for front & side airbags but they dont have a clue, is there anyway of telling by the identification numbers on the units if they are suitable for what im after?

The Peugeot parts cd rom isnt much help either as the Peugeot part number isnt on the unit.

Thanks in advance

Been in to the garage, seen the cars - has a test drive.............

Following on 2 e-mails sent separated by 30 minutes

1) how much is the contract hire rates for a Cayman - 30 mins later a variety of quotes for varying mileages

2) I see that the Target Price in a well known car magazine has been reduced from list to list less almost £3,000 - I take it you will be able to match that.

1 week later a reply to e-mail #2 is still awaited.

>>Porsche dealers are notorious for refusing to deal.

Mate of mine sells these. His comments were that of course Porsche dealers will deal. And people who are on their 3rd or 4th Porsche will frequently get those deals. However, in his opinion people who come in to buy a new Porsche are frequently so chuffed about being able to get one, and somewhat daunted by the process/garage/salesmen that they don't ask. Consequently the profit margins on a Porsche are higher than you might expect and certainly higher than with more "normal" cars.

"57 pay days to go.....and counting"

A lot of senior (service rather than rank) Officers quote this to me, one has now taken to counting his haircuts. To average members of the public this must seem like clockwatching, but these are the most highly experienced, hard working, loyal (but also cynical) people I come across in any walk of life. Their loyalty is towards the Communities they work in and to their Organization as a whole, the other contradiction being that the internal politics - if it wasn't for the productive career Constables on street work, Traffic and CID the Policing of this country would fail - and contrary to the Daily **** and its readership it's not collapsing -- I have worked closely with people like this for the last 30 years, they deliver an efficient and very professional service and unlike a number of other public servants are very adaptable to change.......as I challenge people very often if you want to see how it's really done become a lay visitor to your local Custody Units it's not that hard.

My dad has a '97 Mistral (Terrano import) and has developed a very soggy carpet in the passenger side footwell. He took it in for service 2 weeks back and the garage poked around and cleared some drainage holes, but this hasn't solved the problem. The rain comes in even when the car is stationery, so its not flying from the wheels. I suggested the plastic door membranes could have failed as I had this on a previous car. He says he has sat in the car in pouring rain and cannot see anything coming in at base of the door cards.

Anyone suggest where to look? Do Terranos/Mistrals have any particular problems here? Read more
