Ok, so we all know how white is the 'wrong' colour, to choose, when buying a car, 'cos nobody wants it afterwards. We've discussed plenty of times before.

But HJ's coments on the roadtest of 207cc, says BEST colour is the off white, as shown in the fotos. I'd agree.

Also, I saw a rather smart Discovery at auction earlier this week, 06 plate, in (unpronouncable name) white, metalic, which is no longer a current option. It was a refreshing change from black...silver...black...black...

So maybe opinions might differ, soon, too!!

Hi there,

My car has just passed its 16th birthday and is no longer allowed breakdown cover with my current provider - I rang them up:
they said, up to 15 years was fine,
I said, it's sixteen years so I'll have to cancel then
they said, in the uk it doesn't matter, it can be 40 years old, we thought you meant Europe
I said, it doesn't make any distinction in the policy doc?
They said, trust us it's true
I said, can you email me that?
They said, we're too busy today, how about next week?

Anyway, I've lost faith in them now.

I'm covering one car for 2 people and want homecover and certainty that they'll come when I call - just peace of mind really

I've looked up Europ Assistance, and they're £59 for an all-in comprehensive policy. It seems reallly good and £20 cheaper.

Has anybody here used them? Are they any good?

I know there are some cheaper ones, and ones that say reclaim the money but I've never heard of the brand names - and I think I've heard of these Europ people

Any thoughts?

I think the £45 cap on Auto Aid's homestart is probably fair enough and will cover all the typical minor breakdown situations (flat battery, loose connection, failed fuel pump diagnosis). I guess its designed to stop people using the service for major repairs. Remember that breakdown services are not 'repair services' they are there to deal with simple and cheap fixes to get you going - anything bigger and they take you to a garage.

I've worked out that the clutch on my Primera 1.8 (2000, QG18DE engine) is most likely dragging. With the car started up, sometimes (not always) all gears can be difficult to engage when the car is stopped. They're fine when in motion, and when the engine is switched off the gears go straight in. Disengaging and re-engaging the clutch most often makes no difference.

I've also noticed that the bite point is on the low side, not ridiculously so but lower than it probably should be.

Am I right in thinking this is most likely a fault with the hydraulic system somewhere? Any ideas as to probable cause / cost? Probably a length of a piece of string question I know, but I thought I'd ask anyway :)

Any advice gratefully received. Read more

I want to charge a sealed car battery (not the main battery) as I drive around. I then remove the battery to run lights and stuff while camping/fishing/hunting. Is there an easy way to do this? Read more

I have a second battery for caravanning. It simply links up to the main battery, in parallel, but the live cable has a battery isolator switch. I start the car (on the main battery) then switch in the secondary. When I stop the car, I switch off the battery again.

You can touch with your fingers both terminals on a car battery - no shock

When is a car battery dangerous?

As there is the potential for 400 - 500 amps how come it does not shock when you touch both. My own explanation ios that the volts (12 - 14) is not high enough. But how does this square with the arguement that it is not volts that kill it is current.

And if it is not volts that kill why are USA on 110V for safety? and if we want out door powertools for professional use here in UK they are usually 110V for safety reasons.

It may be that it is the crrent that kills but high voltage is required for the current to flow through a resistive medium (eg human body)...correct? Read more

There have been a few threads concerning parking tickets lately, so when i came across this "snippet" in the AOL Money section i thought it may provide a starting point if you are thinking you have been unjustly done.

Parking tickets

So many local authorities now benefit from money raised by parking tickets that the financial incentive to issue tickets can be strong. So if you feel you have been wrongly issued a parking ticket - for any number of reasons - do something about it.

Start by writing a clear, detailed and very polite letter to the relevant authority, explaining why the ticket was wrongly issued. They may reply to say the ticket was correctly issued and valid. But there is almost always a second opportunity to state your case, so write, once again, a detailed and very polite letter. Remember to sound like a sane, civilised person.

Your second letter will usually go to an adjudicator. An adjudicator will read many, usually badly written and angry, letters. Your polite and reasoned letter - the more details the better - will be a welcome relief. They will almost always decide in your favour. I recently got out of a £100 fine and ticket this way (the ticket was indeed wrongly issued).

If a court date is offered, take it! Ninety per cent of the time the traffic warden who issued the ticket won't turn up and the ticket will be declared invalid. Usually the magistrate will tell you that much time is wasted by local authorities not contesting tickets.

For all complaints

Decide what compensation you want and stick to it.
If you ask for £200, you will usually get £100. So calculate accordingly.
Always complain politely and in great detail.
And keep complaining until your get satisfaction

Finally, remember that you have actually done a public service by complaining; regulations have been changed, bad commercial practices curtailed, and service industries redesigned by the feedback that complainers provide.

How long have you been seing eachother?

OK she's a serious journo, and CPW would definitely benefit from having her on ther payroll (if they were after business journalists), but I'm going to have to stand by what I put, as her advice is not in kilter with my personal experience, and that of my friends over the last 18 months - failed appeals, wasted time and money, at which the enforcing traffic warden wasn't obliged to , and didn't turn up. Like I said before, on the occasions when the ticket was erroneously isued, first letter always got a refund. Not just in Camden either.

Apparently the Scottish Executive has decided to sponsor the pass plus course to the tune of £75, so it should now only cost you £15 if you live north of the border

If you know anybody who is eligible, do all you can to encourage them !

What trim level and engine?

The GT TDI spec Golfs seem to be fetching ridiculous money on the used market. We were going to buy one a few months ago until I realised that anything advertised under £6k was a dog. At the end of the day I just wasn't prepared to spend that kind of money on a mass produced 5 year old family hatchback. Even leggy ones (100k+) were still fetching strong money.

"Non GT" models or those with the lower powered diesel engine are much more realistically priced.
