How do I fit new rear wheel arch to escort van (p reg) for sale on flea bay
Do I have to cut away shape of new arch and weld in new one ??
How does this look
OR am I thinking totaly wrong here!!
Any help greatful. Read more
Basic steps are :-
1. Offer up wheel arch repair panel and mark position with marker pen.
2. Using a grinder with cutting disc cut out old arch leaving 3/4" of old panel to overlap new panel.Do not attempt to butt weld in new panel. A flap wheel is best to remove outer from inner arch, if the inner arch is reasonably sound it will save a lot of work. Be very careful about cutting into petrol tank filler pipes!
3. Position repair panel and clamp it in position around wheelarch after cleaning off paint /rust with flap wheel.
4. Seam weld repair panel an inch at a time to minimise distortion. Have a bucket of water and a sponge handy to minimise buckling. Drill some 7 mm holes around wheelarch flange and plug weld through.
5. Tap down high spots and fill.
hope this helps
Regulars will know that I think Chryslers are poorly-made sheds with hideously overpriced parts - but even I got a shock this week. A mate is trying to flog a '52 PT Cruiser, but the track rod ends are totally shot (its quite common apparently, there's not really up to the job). He's asked me to change them (doing it tomorrow) and so last Friday he got a pair of TRE's from the dealer - guess how much?
The closest guess by tomorrow evening wins a prize (the prize is the old TRE's sent to you - you pay postage of £9.99 LOL!). Read more
>> Ford, VW, Chrysler, FIAT, GM watch out for the Koreans.
And for how long have people been saying that?
Well I think that VW and FIAT are safe from the Koreans for the foreseeable future. The US companies less so - in fact Chrysler may end up in Korean ownership by the end of the year. Ford and GM need to pull some rabbits out of hats if they are going to stay in business into the next decade.
My '03' reg Ford Fiesta 1.4 Zetec has a 'popping & banging' sound when after it's being revved up.
I can't find any leaks around the exhaust pipe, it recently had both Lamba sensors recently & it drives fine but the poping persists.
Could this be because it's out of tune or something more techinical or just something simple?

Returning home after three weeks away I was disappointed, but not surprised, to find the battery (the one I have previously spoken of in the Back room, 10 plus? years old) on my Volvo apparently flat, the starter would barely turn over, certainly not fast enough to start the engine, lights dimming in sympathy as expected.
No problem, I used my portable starter, which has been on permanent stand-by in the rear for a couple of years, to get going; however I was surprised that a seven mile run did not seem to charge the battery up at all, so I decided it was time to accept the inevitable and applied the starter again and headed for Halfords (Sat pm, so the local factors was closed) As usual they were ridiculously expensive so I walked across the road and bought one from the supermarket; this meant of course I had to fit it myself and take my old one home.
Over the next couple of weeks everything was fine, though a few sluggish starts prompted me to check charging and clean up the connections yesterday. When it was time to come off the ramp the starter motor had died (proved by use of meter & a sharp tap on the solenoid) so after checking the price at the factors (!) it was round to the scrapyard for a new old one.
Needless to say, once the recycled motor was fitted, the engine started easily on the old battery this despite having been dumped outside for two weeks in a semi-discharged condition. I know the sensible thing would have been to retain the new battery, but there are greater emotions in play here than common sense!
It occurred to me that the most remarkable thing is that my elderly 740 not only gave me ample warning of the impending failure but had the decency to finally fail completely in my driveway, truly a veritable gentleman of a car.

Yes Simon, of course you are right, yours is the voice of reason.
However I have this quirky sense of eccentricity which needs to be able to say my 21 year old car is still running on probably the original battery (branded Volvo, made in Sweden) even though I have to have a portable starter on permanent standby
I will probably find a home for the supermarket battery in the Rover when I haul that out of winter hibernation, so it won't be wasted, wouldn't be surprised though if it expires before the Volvo one does -:)

I have an Astra 1997 estate, when I brake around town everything feels fine but when I brake from above 50mph I get a severe vibration through the brake peddle and the steering wheel. I have recently changed both the disks and wishbones but the vibration is still there. The car has done 130k miles, any ideas? Cheers Read more
Lots of possibilites but the most obvious would be caliper beginning to stick.
Did you renew brake pads when you changed discs? Did the calipers retract smoothly and equally both sides? Was one of the brake pads more worn out or less worn out than all the others?
Folowing that, suspension bushes (any play will matter), steering joints, mountings, wheels not buckled? Discs fitted correctly? Can you/did you measure run out?
Can anyone advise me about transferring warranties from a private sale.
I am thinking of buying a VW with 1 years manufactures warranty remaining from a private seller. The car was bought back in Auguest '06 from a VW dealership.
Can I transfer the warranty to myself? If so how do I go about this?
Any advice greatly received.

You should not have any problems. Just phone your nearest dealer and tell them you own your car and give them the reg number.I t is all on computer.
I bought my Bora TDI Highline privately and even though I had transferred a registration number, the warranty remaining was transferred to me.
Hello folks. My girlfriend owns a 1997/R Fiesta with the 1.25 Zetec-s engine. I have used the car a couple of times over the last few days and noticed a fairly serious problem with it which I need help with.
The car only shows this problem when cold. When started and driven from cold there is an intermittent fault whereby the engine severly holds back. It feels as though it is pulling out all power, even with the accelerator pedal fully to the floor in first the car crawls forward as if there is no power. It will act like this for a few seconds and then the problem clears itself and the car shoots forward as if something has switched the power back on.
Obviously it is a little dangerous when trying to pull on to busy roundabouts and pulling across junctions etc.
I'm personally a VW and Renault man and know nothing of Fords, however I feel this could be linked to the ignition system. With the clutch depressed the engine revs freely.
Any help which you may have would be really appreciated. Read more
Once the engine is warm then the problem goes. Next time it happens im going to dip the clutch and see how the engine reacts. I guess that would show whether it is an engine or transmission/brakes problem.
