Ok, so we all know how white is the 'wrong' colour, to choose, when buying a car, 'cos nobody wants it afterwards. We've discussed plenty of times before.
But HJ's coments on the roadtest of 207cc, says BEST colour is the off white, as shown in the fotos. I'd agree.
Also, I saw a rather smart Discovery at auction earlier this week, 06 plate, in (unpronouncable name) white, metalic, which is no longer a current option. It was a refreshing change from black...silver...black...black...
So maybe opinions might differ, soon, too!!

There has been recent progress in white paints for cars which mimic the ipod iMac Macbook kind of desirable white rather than the fridge or sink white.
These are yet to come to market, but are about to. I think white may be the next silver.

I once had a Renault Laguna, the original shape which was Arctic White. Even 4 years ago, I always thought that it suited that colour better than blue or red etc.
When I sold it and gave it the pre sale wash and polish and it looked superb.
Then again I believe there are most cars just suit certain colours.
I could never have a red Audi for instance, but the same colour on a Ferrari is almost a must.

I much prefered white for my van, there was the option of red, but it was already fading to salmon pink just thinking about it..
So this 18 month old van in white, with no clearcoat, has never been polished but looks like new.
You can even let it get really filthy and then use a strong hot solution of washing up liquid and the white streaks don`t show.....
I know its only a tool and a commercial vehicle, but the thought of it being in silver ( as are some of its peers) makes me cringe
for the vulnerability and repair expense of metallic paint.
For (IMHO) white to look good on a CAR, it needs *good lines*, there was one car a few years back that had curves at the back that when in white, just needed "Armitage Shanks" written on to be complete..............

I love watching the evolving humour of writing in the dirt on a "white" van.
First there was "Clean me", then "Also available in white", and more recently "Colour may vary from that shown on chart".
Any advance spotted?

Wish my wife was as dirty as this.

White never did it for me. Never will.

As previously stated here the old shape 5 series looked as sharp as anything in white.

I saw a white 06 Clio this morning. It looked very smart as it was very clean.

Saw a Porsche Cayenne in white last weekend, it was a stunner I have to say. Think that white will be the new silver :o)

Many cars look amazing in white. Especially sporty cars. I wish I could get my car in white, but they don't do it.
Metallic white will become very popular soon I think. The only reason I would hesitate buying a white car again, is the last and only white car I've owned, was hard to sell on, and ended up having to trade it in.

'Plough me' was one I enjoyed. But my favourite has to be 'Please don't write in the dirt or I'll have to wash the whole damn van'.
The 88-92 Cavalier GL looked great in white. The painted bumpers transformed its proportions compared to the L model.
Colour suitability is partly to do with detailing: the original Volvo S60 has a black grille and bumper inserts and almost no chrome decoration, which can make it look rather drab in a dark colour. Buy one now and although the silhouette is unchanged, you get bright strips in the bumpers and side mouldings, which make a difference out of all proportion to what it must cost Volvo to fit them. Similarly well-placed chrome details make the Mondeo Ghia look fabulous in Blue Ambition, whereas the same colour without the chrome on an S-Max doesn't have the same effect.
Of course, there's clever, stylish, just-enough application of chrome...and there's the Rover 75, but that's for another thread.

My Mitsubishi Galant Estate (Legnum) VR-4 looks very good in metallic white (pearl), with the black window frames and privacy glass, black roof rails. My wife rejected dark coloured examples, because 'they look like a hearse'. Here in New Zealand, white is a common and popular colour, and very practical in the hot weather. The shade of white is important too. I remember test driving a Eunos 800 (Xedos 9 / Mazda Millennia) in off-white, and the colour was anything but flattering. I ended up buying one in dark metallic grey/blue, which looked very nice. I think Mk2 Jaguars look good in Old English White, but an E-Type or an XJ doesn't. The overall package, with accents and a carefully chosen shade, make the car attractive or otherwise, and making a simple rule on colour is very difficult.

i recently saw etched in grime on the back of a white transit " i luv ipswich" it was during the spate of prostitute murders

I want to see non-metallic paints come back into fashion - especially British Racing Green, Navy Blue and dark red. I think cars today are better looking than ever (with exceptions) but as for colours - boring!

Spotted on the back of a dirty white transit on the A1 recently:
" Remember, a dog is for life, not just for Saturday night."

I also think that it would be rather nice to have white coming back into fashion, as the new silver. I may have imagined it, but didn't someone, somewhere, say that the new Golf GTi looks especially good in white? Harks back to the original.
Maybe it's me.
I guess the trouble with white is, of course, that when clean, they gleam, but soon show the dirt.

That would be a Mr J Clarkson !
