been having problems with the engine 'jumping'. Seemed to clear up with some redex when I stopped using redex problem returned. Yesterday I removed all the injectors from the injector rail and cleaned and refitted them. Now the car is driving as if it is on three cylinders. Also the cat was red hot and glowing cherry red. Any hints or help would be really appreciated. Read more

Have a look at the thread on the Discusion Board concerning duff fuel, especially if you live in the affected area.

As we discussed recently, there seems to be an obsession with low mileages in this country (and elsewhere, for all I know). I found this example on Ebay recently:

tinyurl.com/37cve5

and although it was a nice car 25 years ago (and with no disrespect to its last owner, who may well have cossetted it) I've seen too many rusty ones a decade ago to have much confidence in this one, although it seems set to fetch a healthy price.

I rather fancied one when they were current, but I haven't seen a whole one for some time... Read more

I see the price has come down a bit. Someone's had second thoughts, presumably after mentioning it in the pub...

Chug, Rattle & Knock

I have a Sony head unit (CDX-CA650) in my 306 and want to be able to play my MP3 player (not an iPod) through it. The head unit will take a CD changer (although I don't have one fitted), so it has the red and white BUS line-in and BUS control in. I asked at a local auto shop if I could connect my MP3 player, but they said I couldn't as I need an AUX input. My only options are therefore to buy a new head unit or use a FM transmitter.

I would appreciate if someone could confirm this is the case, and if the FM transmitters are any good.

Thanks in advance. Read more

Chug, Rattle & Knock

I tried connecting directly into the CD changer input but was unable to select the source.

The link to the item on ebay seems exactly what is required - it makes the headunit think there's a CD changer when it's only an MP3. Couldn't find this info anywhere else on the net (although I didn't try ebay). Many thanks.

I have recently bought a Focus, and am experiencing a problem with the accellerator pedal. At about 40mph, normal revs (1800 - 2000) for no apparent reason the accellerator stops working, and the warning light that looks like a spring lights up.
The car does not stall, but it fails to register the pedal again until the car is restarted. After killing the engine, and then bump starting, the pedal works again.
Does anyone know what could be causing the problem?
Thanks

I have similar erratic problems with my Focus TDDI 2002 - it seems to be the 'drive-by'wire' throttle pedal that is prone to failure. I think they're around £80 from Ford dealer.

I haven't changed mine yet as it only over-revs to around 1100 occasionally, but the fault seems to vary in its severity from car to car. It looks like a 10 minute job to change it over as theres only 3 nuts and the wiring connector to swap.

Does anyone know how often you will need to fill the blutec tank on a MB diesel when it is introduced (also licensed to VW / Audi), how much the stuff is likely to cost and what happens if you forget to fill it i.e. will the car still drive. Read more

I guess the cat gradually chokes up if you don't use it - along with appropriate warning light coming on. No idea of the cost...but I suspect there is no real option other than to refill if you want the car to drive properly.

Starting to see alot of these on the road now (new shape) and I cannot help thinking that it is one of the best looking cars on the road when seen in the metal.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder of course and when the Accord first came out I thought that looked great and subsequently bought one. When it was parked beside a new IS the other day it looked very bland by comparison.
Is it just me or does anyone else think it looks good - especially beside a 3, A4 or C. Read more

Hello all,
I'm considering getting a roof rack for my 99 Punto (last of the first generation model), but first need to know what's the maximum weight I could safely carry on it. Does anyone have relevant experience of roof-racks or top boxes on Puntos?

In particular, SWMBO is working in the UK at present and has a ferry booked to bring the Punto home soon. She's also taken a fancy to Ikea's "Billy" bookcases, so that we want to bring four of these with us. However, at 204cm long the boxes won't fit into the Punto as the rear seat swab folds up against the front seat back, limiting the length of the load deck.

The alternatives are to hire a van and do a round trip (adds 50% to the cost), or pay a haulier to bring the bookcases to Ireland (but we still have to get them from Ikea to the haulier's depot), hence the lateral thinking.

Thanks in advance!

Why not leave the hatch open and have part sticking out the back? I'd guess around 1.5m will be in the car and 0.5m hanging out. I've done this several times with doors, scaffolding and ladders.

Afternoon - Looking for a car £2500 - £3000.
Must be under 1.5 for the Tax, be 5 doors, lowish mileage and have Air Con and CD player.

So far I got it to the Almera and Ibiza but looking at both I'm not keen on how the Ibiza drives or how the Almera's looks.

Not sure on a 206 with being a Pug and owning one for 8 years.

Any help appreciated

I notice that some banks like moneybackbank and alliance and leicester bank are offering loans at 5.9% apr. This must mean that the flat rate is about half that as a £15000 loan costs about £1600 extra over 3 years. It looks like even if you already have the money in the bank/building society earning interest say at 5%, you'll be better off borrowing it as in effect you'd be making a profit! .Or have I missed something?

Mapmaker, thanks for your concern but Gordon Brown is NOT taking his cut as I am not paying tax on this particular savings product I have, which is currently paying a healthy 5.85%,and will probably go to 6.1% in March.

I understand some readers have used this company to get some good deals but I would like to know how safe it is.Once you have clicked on 'order your car' is that now a contract and when it says you pay the garage/dealer direct, where exactly is the dealer as i understand it could be the opposite end of the country, which wouldn't be very practical!.I am also intrigued how they can offer such discounts when the main dealers say the're are none available.

I ordered my Galaxy from this site and paid my £500 deposit by CC. I was tehn 'phoned by them to say that "they couldn't find any Galaxy's around at the moment"! I was only after a diesel LX version. The webiste makes no mention at all of having difficullties sourcing cars. It seems to me that they offered a categorical price, I accepted (and paid a deposit). I am pretty sure that that is a contract. I will be talking to trading standards soon.
