Hiya, i have a Audi A4 turbo diesel 2.5 V6 engine, its 1999 (T) but i think it has a problem with its turbo, and was wondering whether anyone would know?

It basically feels like the turbo is never kicking in, and when i'm travelling on the motorway it grudgingly accelerates to about 80mph, but my foot is nearly flat on the floor? ... i have also noticed it takes a while to start the car in the mornings, its always o.k when the engine is hot (starting that is)

what can it be? someone suggested to me the air mass meter?

Thanks natalie Read more

When the codes are read on VAGCOM, it usually states whether they are intermittent or present etc..
It's not unusual to have a few built-up over time, if they haven't been cleared.
I agree the best thing to do is clear the codes, and see if/when they come back, some may not.
I'll post the part number of the MAF and if yours matches, let me know.
When mine was replaced, I also needed an adaptation doing by the garage, I think it is some sort of calibration with the new part fitted.

You could always try driving with it disconnected, and see if driveability improves, but I wouldn't leave it unplugged even if it improves things, as it can cause high speed stumbles that shock load the transmission.

On most Bosch Motronic systems, If a needle-lift sensor fault is present , it usually causes a limp-mode where fuel mass per stroke (mg/S) is limited to a smaller amount.

Own a mk4 golf GT TDI 150 on a late 53 plate. Has been serviced every 20k at the main dealers (longlife service). I bought the car a few days ago and it has done 69k (obv motorway mileage) and its last longlife service and cambelt change was done at 60k.
Now I don't know what you people think but I really am not keen on this longlife service lark. 20000 miles without opening the bonnet seems crazy to me but vw state that modern engines + motorway mileage is perfect for longlife servicing...
Anyway I am not going to live on the motorway, i mainly do city stop-start traffic (75% of the time), country lanes (20%), and motorway and dual carriegways (5%).
Should i give it a normal service immediately or wait another few thousand miles??
What are your views on this longlife service? Read more

Motorway use is the best possible envirionment for long engine life. If it's really had the super-expensive Longlife oil all the time, then engine wear will be minimal - if even measurable. Stick with it [not the fixed-service PD oil] and change it as your judgement, based on use, dictates.

Does anyone know whether a 4 year old Focus has a warning light (or possibly audible warning) for front pad wear? Reason for asking is that my Sister-in-Law's car failed it's MOT allegedly for worn front brake pads. The Ford dealer insisted that the pads would need replacing for the car to pass the MOT. The old pads were 'unfortunately' disposed of before the hefty bill was paid. There was no sign of braking problems or warnings before the MOT. The dealer also tried to insist on replacing two front tyres. Fortunately my SIL was sensible enough to take the car to a tyre specialist who confirmed that the tyres still had about 5000 miles in them. Unfortunately she can't find the car handbook, hence my query. I'd be grateful for any replies. Read more

Sorry, should have said that the car is a Focus Ghia automatic.

Just installed a replacement (new) motherboard on son's computer. On power up, fan starts, then stops: audible "click" from the rear of the mother board (close to ports) and fan starts, then stops.
Fairly rapid cycle no longer than 2 secs for each start/stop. Motherboard is ASRock from Ebuyers nothing fancy; Intel Celeron D socket 478.
Reason for change: son incorrectly inserted RAM chip in old one causing it to lose 3 of the soldered pin connectors which became stuck to inside of socket (heat?)
Yes, I am using a new stick of RAM!
any ideas, please?

We've just bought SWMBO an Evesham Technology Whatlaptop spec Voyager C530. I'd put you the link on, but I fear it may be too long.

Fearing potential teething problems with the newly introduced Vista, we stuck with XP. We weren't too impressed when the assistant in the shop attempted to give us a demo of Vista - and it crashed - having been installed on the machine the previous day.

Hello, can any one offer any advice?

Last week I got the cambelt changed on my 100k miles HDI Citroen Xsara Picasso. When I picked it up, I noticed a clattering noise. Hoping it would go away (yes, I know ... ) I drove on until yesterday when the noise got really bad, the power steering packed in and a battery charge warning appeared. Shortly after there was a big bang but the car continued to run.

Took the car to the dealers and it would seem the cranshaft pulley rubber interior had disintegrated and fallen off.

The dealer claims the pulley would not have been touched to change the cambelt. Does anyone know if this is true?
My suspision is they removed it, didn't retighten it sufficiently, it was then allowed to work loose and destroy itself.

I was charged for the cranshaft pulley repair though they did discount it after I argued my case, as I had been in the week before and they considered me to be a regular customer.

If I discover they were telling porkies about the crankshaft pulley, I will pursue to get my money back.

Thanks. Read more

The pulley on these engines is a sandwich - metal hub bonded to a rubber ring, bonded in turn to an outer ring which carries the grooves for the auiliary drive belt.

It is there as a torsional vibration damper (nothing to do with engine balance) and is put there to limit the amplitude of potentially damaging torsional vibrations (twisting) in the crankshaft.

All decent engines will have one of these fitted, PSA just got the detailing wrong on this one.

I got a quote for a new tyre, from my local garage/tyre-supplier.
I then asked if I got 4 could he knock a bit off - he came back with a figure which was 8.8% off. He was also requested to fit new rear brake shoes.

2 days later, I dropped the car off first thing in the morning, had him make a note of my contact phone number, and went off to work.
Before I left work that day, I rang to check the car was ready to pick up. It was, I went, paid the bill (he'd also replaced a leaking wheel cylinder), and returned to my car, which he'd parked on the dirt road at the back of the garage. It was dark, and the road only has regular streeghtlights.
I drove the half mile back to my house, parked, and went in for tea.

In the daylight the next morning, I found that he'd fitted 65-profile tyres instead of the 60-profiles it should have.
These are 165 width on 14" rims, so, even if all else were equal, my speedo and mileometer will now under-read by 3%.

I rang the guy up and said what I'd found, and he said "Well you said 65 on the phone when you asked me for a quote."
I know that I didn't, because I myself thought a 60-profile was quite low for a 1-litre Micra, so I'd double-checked right before I'd phoned.

(I suspect what may have happened is when I'd said "One six five sixty BY fourteen", he, using on a DECT phone while wandering from the workshop to the office, had heard it as "One six five sixtyFIVE fourteen".)

"Well there are often size options and some people want a slightly different size on, and that's the size you asked for", he said.
"I'm aware of that kind of thing; my old car had options for 195-60 or 186-65 tyre on the same rim, but that difference is only 1.1%, this is 3%", I replied.

The thing is, all four of the tyres removed were 165-60, the spare in the boot is 165-60, and the tyre pressure sticker on the door jamb quotes only 165-60, with no other options printed. Surely if I'd wanted the existing tyres replacing with a different size, I would have made it more explicit, and maybe left a post-it note over the instruments? And surely before changing ALL 4 tyres, he might have called me at work on the number I'd given him, to double-check?

I offered the following: "Look, I appreciate your position; what's the proportion of cost, per tyre, for fitting and balancing? £10 say? so that's £40 for the four. How about I meet you half way and pay you £20 to change them for the correct sized ones?"
"Well I'd be left with 4 tyres that aren't new, because they've been used on the road", he replied.
"But I've driven all of half a mile, at less than 30 mph, on them", I said. (I don't know whether they test-drove the car after the brake overhaul)

"Well I'll have to look at my paperwork... Anyway, I'm in the middle of a job at the minute, can I phone you back in half an hour?"
"Yes"
Of course no phone call has been forthcoming...

From a few past experiences with this guy, he's a good mechanic, very reasonably-priced, and within walking distance of home, which is worth a lot in terms of convenience, so it'd be a definite shame and incovenience to sour the relationship just by being bludi-minded.

I know I do have 4 new tyres and the difference is small and it's only a 7 year-old Micra, but I was looking forward to getting these new boots and now I've paid good money and not got what I wanted. Even dismissing the increased risk of exceeding a speed limit, I also wonder, by the letter of the law, how I stand with regard to insurance in the event of a bump when my tyres are not quite the manufacturer's quoted size?

What would YOU do?

Interesting that you have to tell your insurance company of a minor change in rolling radius but you could change to a new set of the same size with minimal grip(and there are some about) and no requirement to tell them.

My car is a 2001 Ghia and still carnt find out the problem of my climate control. The fault is that as soon as i adjust the temp settings from off to either auto or fan speed or hotter/colder it kicks in the main cooling fan and aircon which during these winter starts means the car takes an age to warm up. The orange aircon light does not show on but is working when the aircon button is selected or the auto screen demist is used. I have been informed you can switch the aircon Off with a correct button combination which works (thanks) but only stays off as long as the Off or Auto buttons are not touched "not that easy with little hands pressing every thing in reach" Hoping somebody may be able to come up with a permanent fix to restore my climate control back to full operation. Thanks Matt. Read more

Another point I forgot to mention ,is that the cooling fan/s switch off above road speeds of 60 KPH .Unless of course the ambient or underbonnet temps are excessively high.

firstly little info about my car '91 sierra 1.8lt with piersbury carb.
my problem with car is as the title suggests it has very rough running from cold, but fine when warm/hot.
vehicle doesn't overheat and heats up like it should neither too fast or too slow.
ideas welcomed

The Carb could be dirty, take off the air filter and with engine running warm, spray carb cleaner down until it's clean.
Check if the air filter if needs renewal. If the problem is still there, then the choke/carb is at fault or too much mixture setting or sticking flap. Other things to look out for is block fuel filter, gummed fuel line, fuel treatment will do the trick.
See how it goes.

Its been a while since I frequented these boards with questions about what to get (its probably about 3 years....). Currently driving a Hyundai Terracan which I bought in July 2005 at a year old. Now its only got 50K on the clock and still 2 years warranty remaining, but the 26mpg it returns is not very environmentally friendly. So I'm thinking about changing it....

But - with two small children (19 months and 8 months) and a large double buggy, what car does one purchase?

My only criterion is that it needs to be:

a. Diesel.
b. Not a run-of-the-mill MPV - so please no Picasso, zafira etc..
c. less than 5years old - company car scheme
d. Okay for taking onto building sites - not necessarily 4x4, but not a lowered hot hatch!

Budget - hmmm - £10 - £15K

Any ideas?

Why not get another Hyundai - this time the Santa Fe new shape. Got a good new diesel engine, its off the ground a bit but not like a Tonka toy and looks really good. You'll also get a better px against yours at a hyundai dealer I should think.

Motorpoint seem to have lots of good deals. I'd like to know what people's experience is of dealing with them as I don't know much about them.

Motorpoint registered the car in the name of their UK Holding company. It was New at first registration in the UK but I was listed as the second owner. Motorpoint seemed to order job lots of Galaxy Ghia TDIs in Silver as they had found them to be the most popular. The car was in perfect condition and there were no problems at handover. I had enough fuel to make it to the Texaco garage just outside the dealership and managed to put around 65 litres in!
