The following posting has appeared on another website that I frequent. The poster is a genuine Citroen main dealer mechanic who is not prone to spurious postings. Has anybody here seen similar problems???????

Over the last week we have had a spate of oxygen sensors failing causing stalling/flat spot problems. Having enquired around it would appear other dealers in Kent have been experiencing problems and whilst a dealer in south london had no problems by lunchtime, a text later in the day confirmed that 3 had arrived as breakdowns by the afternoon.

It would appear that affected customers are using Morrisons, Asda, Safeway, Tescos & Total garages and have all filled up in the last 7 days.....the fault isnt apparent immediately.

Obviously without testing fuel i am unable to point the finger at the fuel suppliers, but it does seem strange that a component that has been in use for a good many years has suddenly developed a fault that causes them to fail one after the other.

I can only assume that something within the fuel is coating the sensor and stopping it performing as intended.

I do know that fuel samples are being tested, and will post results when known......but until then....be careful, it may cost you £250.

As a final note, this isnt limited to Citroen, i know of another multi franchise dealership that has problems across its product range, and all at the same time.

The problem is that it's now stuck in the garage with 30 litres of this fuel in its tank.
The garage say they can pump it out but can't dispose of it due to strict regulations
so the ball is in our court on bringing cans to put it in! Is this really right?
Are there garages that will pump it out and dispose of it themselves?

A previous thread listed the HSE requirements for dealing with petrol. Not an easy process.

But the advice from an "expert" on the BBC happily recommended "removing" the fuel from your tank.
How and by whom?

I guess any drained petrol would be OK in older vehicles but just try and convince anyone to accept it.

At least the story is changing from " there is nothing wrong with this petrol" and other tests are being made.

Good afternoon everyone,

While filling up at my local BP this morning, I noticed the price of Super Unleaded (or ultimate whatever they call it) was 7 or 8 pence more than standard RON95 a litre.

Just got me wondering, how many of the backroomers actually use Super Unleaded? If so, is because your car demands it, i.e (performance cars, Porsche, Ferrari, BMW M5 etc) or because of extra additives / extra MPG the companys claim you get? Cleaner engine?

Just curious to get peoples opinion on it? I've always thought about putting some in my car but don't think it would be of any benefit?

Thanks

I'm considering buying a ford s-max, but need a tow bar. Would prefer a factory fitted one, however, my local dealer says he cannot source one, and that I will have to wait until the end of march before I can order one (and then a further 12 weeks while ford build the car??!!) When I suggested that the local dealer fits it, he is quoting 2 days labour and about £1000! He also mentions if I go to a third party to get one fitted, I will be invalidating the warranty.
Has anyone else had a similar experience or can they offer any advice please? Read more

Marlot and JC2,
Thanks very much for coming back to me and for the advice. Decided to wait for a factory fitted towbar. Have also ditched my dealer!!

As I was driving out of Morrisons today after filling up with diesel, I noticed that they were selling 5 litres of screenwash for either £2.49 or £2.99 , buy one get one free which I think is a cracking price as I have seen some places selling these for a fiver for one bottle..

Will get some next time I am passing. Read more

Another vote here for Sonax - you can pick it up in Vauxhall dealers.

My 2002 Focus Diesel 1.8 Tddi had a water pump fitted at 50k miles and now seems to be using a small amount of coolant again (two years and 27k miles later).

Is it normal for some coolant to be used? I always thought the coolant was there for 'life' until it needed changing or you actually had a leak. I can't see a leak anywhere but the usage is only about 1 litre in the last couple of months.

I'm exepecting it to be the water pump again - not that I'm impressed with the replacement lasting such a short time. Are there any other known reasons for coolant usage on this car? Read more

Approx 18 months ago my Ford Focus developed coolant loss. Eventually we discovered that there is a stainless steel water jacket incorporated somewhere in the exhaust system, as part of the emmissions control. Water was leaking internally and being evaportated via the exhaust. This showed when starting the car first thing in the morning with clouds fo steam coming from the exhaust for approx. 2 minutes.

My local garage spoke to Ford, who admitted that it was a known fault with Focus's.

A new unit cost about £180.

Just a quick heads-up to any other Passat B5.5 (MY2000 to MY2005) owners -- be ready for a bigger bill than expected if it fails the MOT on the front upper suspension arm ball joints.

My 2003 car (51,000 miles) has failed on ONE ball joint but the entire upper arm assembly on that side has had to be removed to drill out the pinchbolt, which is corroded in place. This has turned a 2-hour job into an all-dayer, luckily NOT at main VAG dealer hourly rates.

The garage tells me they are seeing a LOT of 4 / 5 year old Passats with this problem, and it's a right pig of a job. I've also seen a couple of posts both here and on UKPassats about this, it seems to be an Achilles heel on these cars

So if you're looking to buy one, ask if it's already had the ball joints done!

I'd be interested to hear about other replacements that have been necessary on the Passats that have covered the monumental mielages detailed above in their role as taxis.

E.G replacement clutches, cam belt period replacements, oil changes etc. ...

I have a 2001 Opel Astra 1.7DTI which is suffering from a lack of power. I know this is not supposed to be lightening quick however I cant get it going even in the low gears. It is slow to pull away from junctions, go up hills, overtake etc. There is no ECU warning light appearing and every now and again it comes to life whereby I can just about keep it from spinning the tires. When this happens it will stay this way until I turn off the engine and then it reverts back to its usual sluggish self. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A mate of mine had a Vectra DI, which exhibited similar symptons. Both Vauxhall garages and independent diesel specialists could find no fault, but had no difficulty in suggested the air mass meter (£80, no change) and then a new injection pump (£2000+).

He put up with the car, and then looking under the bonnet with the engine running, he felt a gale blowing. Turns out thast the pipe from the turbo to the inlet manifild has a great big split along it. New pipe, new car that is still running strong.

Check all joints and the pipes themselves.

HOWEVER, before doing this, make sure you have no loose clothing or jewellery, and if sticking your hand anywhere in the engine compartment, keep away from anything that rotates. And that includes the electric cooling fan that may switch in and out at any time.

I've had two DI vectras and a DTI Astra (2.0 litre) that have all suffered from the dreaded injector seals problems - now cured - and the middle V reg Vectra had a nasty thirst for oil. When they run okay, they're nice engines......

Good morning everyone,

The old Chestnut of tyre brands... again! :)

Need 2 new front tyres TODAY for the Mondeo. Was going to use blackcircles, but would have to wait 2 or days for the booking.... so I may be forced into Kwik-Fit, even though I swore Id never use them!

Just had a quick look on there Web site and there cheapest Tyres seem to be GT Champiro 55's. 2 of them fully fiited for £149 (205/55/16V) seems dear compared to etyres, blackcircles etc, but I do need them today, also they have an offer on Firestones, I can get 2 of them fully fitted for £155 (inc 15% discount for the offer) I believe Firestones to be part of the Bridgestone company but not sure?
Which do I go for if forced into using Kwik-Fit?

Any help as always much appreciated..

pootling back form a shopping trip today the temperature gauge hit maximum and the engine lost power.

I pulled over and called Green Flag who took me home. I did have a look whilst waiting for the breakdown truck and the belt that drives the water pump is intact and the level in the header tank is where it was last week. The car is an 02 reg with 114k mileage.

I'm guessing that its the water pump impellor. How difficult is this to change? Does it mean a new waterpump and does it have to be a Ford part or are there pattern parts available. Are there other possible causes for the overheating?

atmospheric water vapour will rust

polished parts very nicely.

However the two components appear to be joined and sealed with no way for any ingress, could be greased for all I know, hence my suggestion that a water leak might lead to the corrosion.

Anyone have any more info?

After four main dealer services when the car has been filled with 10W/30, this time the dealer has used Castrol 5W/30 Longlife III on my 2.0ltr 8V Petrol Passat.

Just wondered if this is wrong and why they would suddenly change. What do I top it up with? Can I use the 10W/30 Halfords Oil that I recently bought? Read more
