I'm considering buying a ford s-max, but need a tow bar. Would prefer a factory fitted one, however, my local dealer says he cannot source one, and that I will have to wait until the end of march before I can order one (and then a further 12 weeks while ford build the car??!!) When I suggested that the local dealer fits it, he is quoting 2 days labour and about £1000! He also mentions if I go to a third party to get one fitted, I will be invalidating the warranty.
Has anyone else had a similar experience or can they offer any advice please? Read more
As I was driving out of Morrisons today after filling up with diesel, I noticed that they were selling 5 litres of screenwash for either £2.49 or £2.99 , buy one get one free which I think is a cracking price as I have seen some places selling these for a fiver for one bottle..
Will get some next time I am passing. Read more
Another vote here for Sonax - you can pick it up in Vauxhall dealers.
My 2002 Focus Diesel 1.8 Tddi had a water pump fitted at 50k miles and now seems to be using a small amount of coolant again (two years and 27k miles later).
Is it normal for some coolant to be used? I always thought the coolant was there for 'life' until it needed changing or you actually had a leak. I can't see a leak anywhere but the usage is only about 1 litre in the last couple of months.
I'm exepecting it to be the water pump again - not that I'm impressed with the replacement lasting such a short time. Are there any other known reasons for coolant usage on this car? Read more
Approx 18 months ago my Ford Focus developed coolant loss. Eventually we discovered that there is a stainless steel water jacket incorporated somewhere in the exhaust system, as part of the emmissions control. Water was leaking internally and being evaportated via the exhaust. This showed when starting the car first thing in the morning with clouds fo steam coming from the exhaust for approx. 2 minutes.
My local garage spoke to Ford, who admitted that it was a known fault with Focus's.
A new unit cost about £180.
Just a quick heads-up to any other Passat B5.5 (MY2000 to MY2005) owners -- be ready for a bigger bill than expected if it fails the MOT on the front upper suspension arm ball joints.
My 2003 car (51,000 miles) has failed on ONE ball joint but the entire upper arm assembly on that side has had to be removed to drill out the pinchbolt, which is corroded in place. This has turned a 2-hour job into an all-dayer, luckily NOT at main VAG dealer hourly rates.
The garage tells me they are seeing a LOT of 4 / 5 year old Passats with this problem, and it's a right pig of a job. I've also seen a couple of posts both here and on UKPassats about this, it seems to be an Achilles heel on these cars
So if you're looking to buy one, ask if it's already had the ball joints done!

I'd be interested to hear about other replacements that have been necessary on the Passats that have covered the monumental mielages detailed above in their role as taxis.
E.G replacement clutches, cam belt period replacements, oil changes etc. ...
I have a 2001 Opel Astra 1.7DTI which is suffering from a lack of power. I know this is not supposed to be lightening quick however I cant get it going even in the low gears. It is slow to pull away from junctions, go up hills, overtake etc. There is no ECU warning light appearing and every now and again it comes to life whereby I can just about keep it from spinning the tires. When this happens it will stay this way until I turn off the engine and then it reverts back to its usual sluggish self. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A mate of mine had a Vectra DI, which exhibited similar symptons. Both Vauxhall garages and independent diesel specialists could find no fault, but had no difficulty in suggested the air mass meter (£80, no change) and then a new injection pump (£2000+).
He put up with the car, and then looking under the bonnet with the engine running, he felt a gale blowing. Turns out thast the pipe from the turbo to the inlet manifild has a great big split along it. New pipe, new car that is still running strong.
Check all joints and the pipes themselves.
HOWEVER, before doing this, make sure you have no loose clothing or jewellery, and if sticking your hand anywhere in the engine compartment, keep away from anything that rotates. And that includes the electric cooling fan that may switch in and out at any time.
I've had two DI vectras and a DTI Astra (2.0 litre) that have all suffered from the dreaded injector seals problems - now cured - and the middle V reg Vectra had a nasty thirst for oil. When they run okay, they're nice engines......
Good morning everyone,
The old Chestnut of tyre brands... again! :)
Need 2 new front tyres TODAY for the Mondeo. Was going to use blackcircles, but would have to wait 2 or days for the booking.... so I may be forced into Kwik-Fit, even though I swore Id never use them!
Just had a quick look on there Web site and there cheapest Tyres seem to be GT Champiro 55's. 2 of them fully fiited for £149 (205/55/16V) seems dear compared to etyres, blackcircles etc, but I do need them today, also they have an offer on Firestones, I can get 2 of them fully fitted for £155 (inc 15% discount for the offer) I believe Firestones to be part of the Bridgestone company but not sure?
Which do I go for if forced into using Kwik-Fit?
Any help as always much appreciated..

Thanks again everyone!
pootling back form a shopping trip today the temperature gauge hit maximum and the engine lost power.
I pulled over and called Green Flag who took me home. I did have a look whilst waiting for the breakdown truck and the belt that drives the water pump is intact and the level in the header tank is where it was last week. The car is an 02 reg with 114k mileage.
I'm guessing that its the water pump impellor. How difficult is this to change? Does it mean a new waterpump and does it have to be a Ford part or are there pattern parts available. Are there other possible causes for the overheating?

atmospheric water vapour will rust
polished parts very nicely.
However the two components appear to be joined and sealed with no way for any ingress, could be greased for all I know, hence my suggestion that a water leak might lead to the corrosion.
Anyone have any more info?
After four main dealer services when the car has been filled with 10W/30, this time the dealer has used Castrol 5W/30 Longlife III on my 2.0ltr 8V Petrol Passat.
Just wondered if this is wrong and why they would suddenly change. What do I top it up with? Can I use the 10W/30 Halfords Oil that I recently bought? Read more

>>She had failed to declare a very minor conviction some 20+
years ago.
AS, with the greatest of respect, I don't think so.
Of course, she may have just cracked under questioning!
My view seems very similar to Cardew's (indeed a lot of what he's written is almost word for word what I've posted in the past), however it is crucial for your party to keep their mouths shut while going through Immigration in the US. If you're with some gobby family members and one of them shouts out 'what about that time you got arrested' then you might be in for a tough time. Of course, anything drugs related is a complete no no.
My niece was, unfortunately, involved in car car accident a couple of weeks ago. She was, thankfully, only slightly injured, but her car has now been declared an insurance write-off by the insurance company.
Although she was completely blameless for the accident, with the woman who caused the accident admitting liability both to my niece and the police, now that the claim is being processed it would appear that my niece is likely to end up severely out of pocket due to an accident which was in now way her fault, and which, in my own opinion, she could not have possibly avoided.
The insurance company have valued her car at a very low figure, with no reasonable justification. In fact, at their valuation, my niece will not even receive enough money to pay off the loan which she took out to buy the car just over a year ago. Her loan still has three years to run, and she has informed me that the loan will have to be repaid early now that the car has been declared a total loss. This will mean she will still have to pay all four years of loan interest, even though she has only had the benefit of just over one year of it, because that is the contract which she originally agreed to.
The fact that she has, in effect, lost three years of her loan period due to this accident, does this mean that this money can be claimed from the third party's insurers as an uninsured loss? Also, can the difference between insurers valuation and amount she has still outstanding on her loan be similarly claimed?
Further, she has been told that, because she has been paying her insurance premium by monthly payments, since the car is being written-off she is now required to pay off all the remaining payments for the current years insurance. I believe that, to the best of my knowledge, this insurance will then be cancelled when the insurance payment for her car is received. This cost, which is approxinately £700, will be deducted from the insurance company's payout to my niece for the total loss. Is this what normally happens?
She is loosing this £700 due to the accident which wasn't her fault. Should this amount not also be added to the uninsured loss recovery claim?
My own feeling about this is that my niece is being ripped-off by the insurance companies and, also, by her so-called solicitor. I feel that if she still remains out of pocket after the "settlement" then she should sue to woman who caused the accident, not her insurance company, the woman herself, as my niece just cannot afford to be out of pocket due to the careless driving of this other woman.
Could anyone give me any advice or suggestions, please, on any of this. Perhaps you or someone you know might have been in a similar situation in the past, and can give me some guidance as to how my niece should proceed with this.
From my last conversation with her a few days ago, she has had more than enough of everything connected with this accident, is very stressed about it, and just wishes to bring the matter to a conclusion as quickly as possible. I said the insurance company will love you as this is just what they want you to do and settle the matter with as little fuss and minimum cost for themselves as possible.
Thank You.

I had a problem with a third party insurance company some years ago.
My car suffered hit and run damage but, by a lucky chance, I was told who had done it. When I claimed for my uninsured loss and cost of a hire car, the company refused my claim for a hire car as I was in receipt of a car allowance. They maintained that this allowance covered the cost of the hire car. Anyway, I then wrote to them again itemising every journey to do with the accident, e.g. visits to police station to report it, visit to body shop for quote, etc. £1 for each letter that I wrote, plus cost of 'phone calls. They replied that my claim was not justified. I wrote again, with a revised claim for my extra letter, and gave them seven days to settle or I would seek legal redress. They again refuted my claim so I saw a solicitor. Within ten days they settled for the full amount.
Don't waver, and make sure you claim for all incidental expenses associated with the claim.
Marlot and JC2,
Thanks very much for coming back to me and for the advice. Decided to wait for a factory fitted towbar. Have also ditched my dealer!!
Regards,
Ian
