HI All,
i am curious about egr valves - doesnt affect me personally i am just quiourious- and have the following queries,
1/ I have heard that egr valves can get gummed up if the car has not had regular oil changes why is this if its is only exhaust gas that goes past the valve?? does oil from the crankcase breather go past the egr valve and back into the air inlet??
2/ At what stage does the egr valve open and close?? is it directly proportianal to engine revs??
3/ What would be the sypmtoms of an egr valve is stuck open or shut when its not meant to be??
4/ I am sure i read somewhere that the exhaust gas is used to cool the bearings in a turbo- im sure its in renaults- is this correct i would have thought that exhaust gassess be rto hot to cool down anything??
5/ Could probs with EGR valves cause black smoke to come out of an exhaust??? and if so why does this happen??
Cheers andy

Yeah, I certainly had all the cooling system troubles, but they were actually quite good motors once you got past the little problems. Certainly the only cars I have ever owned where you could change gear every time (up or down) without the clutch once you were on the move. I only bought mine (the first one) because all my mates had Minis and I wanted to be different. Nothing has changed nearly 40 years on...
Hi all,
before you all start posting links to the other pug threads to do with cutting and soldering the wires underneath the seats, I have looked, both in the threads and under the seats and this is slightly different.
I have a '99 T-reg Pug 206GTi with the airbag flashing away merrily, much to my annoyance.
As I said I have read the threads saying about the wires under the seat, and I am presuming they are for the seat belt pretensioners, but my pug doesn't have pretensioners and so no wires.
erm, help?!?
Thanx in advance Read more

A question that i have been pondering for years (shows what a sad life i have) is why are hazard lights all four indicators ?, why are they not red ,i.e. rear red lights and red at front.
When you approach a car parked amongst others all you can see is the right hand flasher and they could be indicating out, and indicators flash anyway whereas red lights do not flash.
Probably a logical reason , but why ??.

Ive got a single play pioneer fitted in my 406, it was a simple case of unplugging the standard fit radio, & refitting the plugs straight into the pioneer with no problems. I purchased a radio adaptor kit from a motor factors to fit into the dash shaped gap that made it look tidier n the pioneer slotted straight in, costs about £15 from motor factors.
hi all, i have a problem, my mondeo with 12100 miles, have owned it for 5 months no problem, but now things are going wrong first driving from sheffield to chesterfield 5 miles from home the temp gague goes well past the red andthe car loses power, tried in other gears but no joy, then it cut out. managed to limp back at 20 mph.next morning checked the coolant etc fired it up no prob, all gagues ok, went to shops ok set off after about 3 miles the temp gague went in to red, then settled down but no noticable power loss

Its perfectly possible if its an import. I bought mine in March 2003 on an 03 plate. It was over £5K off list price with Trade Sales - delivery miles but one registered owner.. Reason being that the car was originally purchased by a hire firm, but for some reason never registered or used. The warranty started from November 2002. As it was an import,, for me, it only had the BALANCE of the 2 year warranty and hence would have run out in November 04 - 19 months after purchase. The same could have happened here. That's one of the ways that such firms manage to churn out such bargains.
As it happens, my gamble paid off. I only had £80 in repairs to pay up to the third anniversary of ownership earlier this year and, touch wood, nothing since.
I believe my clutch is slipping (change gear, lift clutch, revs hang, not a lot happens), and I was thinking about replacing it. I drive a 1.6 Focus 51-reg. I wondered if anyone had any idea of what this might actually cost, I'll be ringing around both independents and Ford garages tomorrow, and I always think it's best to have some idea of what to pay... 110,000 miles, so it's perfectly feasible I'd have thought...
I've never been able to understand people going seriously out of their way to pay 1p less per litre for fuel, but this afternoon the BP garage on one side of the road was selling diesel for 94.9p per litre (and it's on the way out of a retail park), and the Shell garage on the other side had it at 89.9. 22.5 p per gallon less! And the BP garage was full, too....

As long as it conforms with the EU spec (which they all legally must do),
I thought fuel in the UK was sold to BS spec this is what it says on the pumps and this is slightly different to the EU directive on vehicle fuel standards.
Am having engine problems (pop-pop-popping & more recently just cutting out). We think its being caused by an opaque/translucent jelly from the fuel tank which we have found blocking filters, the carb needle valve, main jet, emulsion tubes - its getting into everything! After clearing the car will work for a while but this jelly returns quickly.
Any ideas on where it comes from & how to get rid of it? Read more
How could anyone not like a beetle?
Hello? I am here.
But hey even I dont hate beetles enough to do that,
Yes it sounds like you have been sugared. Tank needs to be steamed cleaned, and all the pipes, pump, filter, carb cleaned and flushed.

Hope this is of some use for starters
I should also add that modern systems no longer just open or shut by vacuum but by operating the valve electrically(solenoid or stepper motor) or by having electric feedback from a vacuum operated valve allow the EGR to be calibrated closely to engine requirements by varying the flow.It also is used to signal the engine management system of EGR problems so that the engine management light can be triggered and fault codes stored.
